At what mileage would one expect the water pump to require changing.

Dealer is suggesting we change ours when the cam belt is changed. Car has done approx. 30,000 miles Read more

You need to find out which engine you have. The CR engines which this probably has are recomended for a belt change @ 120k or 10 years.

My (t)rusty Focus is now not so trusty any more so Im in the market for a new motor. Ive got around a £3k budget, wife and 2 kids, commute to work about 30 miles a day and the usual pottering around.

Ive looked at Mazda 6 as they seem cheapish and could possibly get up to an 05 for the budget, BMW 316/8 on a 52 plate but have hit a block on anything else.... Read more

I can thoroughly recommend Saab 9-3. Your last chance to own one probably. I wrote about mine here:

A few years ago there were some posts about car catalogues. I have a collection from the Fifties mainly of cars that were on sale in the UK.

I need to downsize and wondered what the market is like for such items. Can anyone help, please?... Read more

I have very little heat coming from the heater. The radiator and thermostat and motor new. (there was a fault code for the motor, but when motor changed no fault code now.) there is no other fault code. The water pump is working and pressure to radiator and coolant system is fine.I have carried out bleeding and there does not appear to be any blockage. There does not appear to a blockage through the cooling system including the core. and hoses. I do have some heat when control is on recirculating (engine heat. but no flow through the heater coil.

VW have not been able to solve this problem. However there must be someone who has a similar peoblem.I only wish I could find that someone. Any help would be greatly appreciated Read more

Hi,
I'm an IT guy with almost no idea about cars.
I wanted initially to buy any VAG engine car so I picked VW CC model due to its look but then I chose to go for Skoda as these cars can be equipped with rough roads package and they have a big trunk to carry all my fishing gear...
I saw that Skoda Superb is quite nice and fits my needs.
As I intend to drive about 25000km per year I was thinking that I should go for a diesel engine however now I'm confused about the known problems with the 2.0l ones so I don't know what to buy...
I would invest 15-17k euro in an <100000km mileage car(it must be Skoda), I don't consider buying a new car as an option.
So, to recap, what engine should I choose for a Skoda Superb car?
1. Gasoline
or
2. Diesel

For any of the above chosen option, what engine capacity/type would you recommend?

Thanks a lot! Read more

Probably not much in it if you're in the UK, but your reference to kilometres suggests you aren't. It'll depend on the price of diesel compared with petrol in whatever country you are.

I am looking to buy a new family car to replace my ford focus.

I'm looking something around a year old, a bit bigger, decent boot size that will hold a folded pram. Something reasonably economical, possibly diesel for doing 15k miles a year.

Budget is 12.5k plus my car as a trade in, so say 13.5k total.

I have been looking at a Toyota avensis, Hyundai i40 - both saloons. Also looking at a Peugeot 3008.

Had been looking at kia sportage but too pricy a year old. Had looked at qashqai but boot space could be an issue.

I have been offered a leasing deal on a qashqai for 4 years, £220 a month with £666 deposit. Total cost over 4 years is £11,100.

How would this compare to buying a 1 year old avensis for example, for 13.5k, on partly on finance so total repayable is £14,550 after 4 years. How much would a 5 year old 2.0 TR D4D Avensis be worth with roughly 75k miles on it? 6 grand?

Just trying to work out which would make more sense, assuming the qashqai is big enough.

Anything else I should consider, had a test drive in an octavia but didn't like the interior.

Thanks for the help Read more

when releasing clutch in first gear, at point of release if done too quickly, i get severe engine vibration below clutch pedal. if going up a steep hill, again in first, at point of release it will shudder and almost freewheel ( no torque / no power ) at release point.

aside from this, 2nd gear ok unless real strain such as going up steep hill, then same probs.... Read more

Could just be that the clutch plate has got 'rough'. Generally on a diesel you hardly have to slip the clutch to get away so it doesn't get much use, try holding it on the clutch for for about 30 seconds but do it gently, the slipping may well improve it.
