M25 commuting question - notmyname

Sorry if this is the wrong place, but someone may be able to offer some advice.

Leaving at 8.15am on a week day going down the A20 from zone 3 london to junction 3 on the m25 then anti clockwise to the M3 then to junciton 9 on the M3, how long would it take?

google is telling me 1hour 40 min.

Is this feasible, could I do it faster or will it take longer ?

thanks

Almost certainly no faster, occasionally a lot longer.

Wouldn't it be quicker to go clockwise?

junction 3 is south east and the M3 is southwest so probably better to stay south i think

No-brainer. Look at the map. Much further if you go anti-clockwise.

"....probably better to stay south."

Agreed, and I think you must have meant clockwise - i.e. going directly from J3 to J12 (M3).

SE London to Winchester sounds like one hell of a commute if you have to do it every day. It pains me to say it, but train via Waterloo might be worth considering.

Ahhh opps i meant clockwise in the origianl post! I think you migth be right about the trains, always the issue is the time getting to and from the stations and the inevitable wait in between connections that might make it longer.

thanks for the response!

My (limited) experience of driving the M25 and the memories of working with colleagues who used it to get to work suggests after doing the journey a few times you can pretty accurately estimate how long it will take - BUT there will be not infrequent occasions when you will have a major hold-up, doubling your journey time, if not more.

It seems to me we have a situation where the road just about copes with the traffic until something, perhaps quite trivial, disturbs the equilibrium. All it takes is a strategically placed broken-down lorry, or something similar.

At least you can read or use your laptop on the train (if you can get a seat).
