Skoda Superb - Skoda superb 2009+ what engine should I choose? - Johnny_Bravo
Hi,
I'm an IT guy with almost no idea about cars.
I wanted initially to buy any VAG engine car so I picked VW CC model due to its look but then I chose to go for Skoda as these cars can be equipped with rough roads package and they have a big trunk to carry all my fishing gear...
I saw that Skoda Superb is quite nice and fits my needs.
As I intend to drive about 25000km per year I was thinking that I should go for a diesel engine however now I'm confused about the known problems with the 2.0l ones so I don't know what to buy...
I would invest 15-17k euro in an <100000km mileage car(it must be Skoda), I don't consider buying a new car as an option.
So, to recap, what engine should I choose for a Skoda Superb car?
1. Gasoline
or
2. Diesel

For any of the above chosen option, what engine capacity/type would you recommend?

Thanks a lot!

Will most of your driving be in cities, or on open roads?

If it is on open roads, go for the diesel. 25000km per year means you will probably save a lot of cash on fuel each year if you go for the 2.0 diesel.

About 3650km I would estimate I'll drive in the city, however, the thought of engine failure while driving on the highway or very far from home ( due to the specific problems of 2.0l) is kinda creepy... I did some research on the internet and apparently the CR version of 2.0l seems to be more stable, but, is it safe enough?

It was the 2l PD engine that had all the problems. This was fitted up to mid 2008 in the Passat. Skoda seem to get the leftover engines that VW don't want, so this engine may be found in Skodas after 2008. The CR engine is fine. Just make sure the one you buy has the CR engine, if you look at the plastic engine cover the moulded flutes are in line with the car on the PD engine but at a 45 degree angle on the CR. Also the 4 letter engine type shown in the service book starts with a C for the CR engine.

I agree it was the 2l PD engine that had the injector problems although most of these should be fixed now.

The other problem with the 2l relates to the self-destructing balance shaft module/oil pump drive issues which write the engine off. As far as I know this does not affect the Skoda Super 2009+ as the transverse versions of this engine are not fitted with the balancer shaft module.

It does however affect 2l diesel A4 and above Audis and the Skoda Superb 2l pd MK I (Any VAG 2.0 diesel car where the engine is fitted North/South as opposed to transverse).

Not as much as you think if at all

Probably not much in it if you're in the UK, but your reference to kilometres suggests you aren't. It'll depend on the price of diesel compared with petrol in whatever country you are.
