I have just re-newed my car insurance through the internet. Thought I had found a good price. Got a letter early this week saying I had not declared an accident I had in 2010, so they wanted another £78 from me. The accident they refered to was; I was driving a city car club car, hired and paid by my employer who is the CCC member not me, all I did ws drive it for them. I was waiting to turn right a cross roads and was struck on the near side by an articulated wagon that did not stop. By the time I had chance to turn round and go in the direction of the wagon I had no chance of finding the vehicle. I did make a note of the name on the back of the wagon that struck me. But, when a claim was sent to them they said; sorry without proof/registarion number/trailer number we can't help you.

So, why do I get punished by the insurance compnay when it was not my vehicle. My company paid the insurance access you would expect, I presumed its like driving a company vehicle.... Read more

You were behind the wheel at the time of the accident and a claim was made on the insurnace thus you must declare it when you renew even if you think you were not at fault, it not your decision.

Be thankful that they have charged you £78 now rather than refuse to pay out later should you have another accident.

Might be an idea to test the continuity of the sensor to earth, I don't know whether they would automatically do that when checking the injector mechanically.

With todays bonkerishly hot weather (seriously, Britain shouldn't be this hot) you have to ask what it must've been like in the days before Air Con.

So I did....just now. Read more

My new car (Toyota Avensis) has the most amazing 7 speed fan, both powerful and remarkably quiet, which I find is enough for in-car ventilation in most normal driving. I regularly find myself not switching on the air-con, while I would have done in all my previous cars.

Ive just had a Turbo fitted onto my 2003 Ford Mondeo TDCi Estate 115bhp....I had the injectors refurbished about 8 weeks ago and hat was a superb job done, I was well pleased. Then the car started to blow more black smoke than normal for a car of that age and 131000 miles on the clock. I was told it was the Turbo, so bought one and had it fitted yesterday (Friday 17th August) It was out of a 2004 TDCi and the mechanic said in great condition, how long does it take for all the old crud in the system to blow out?

There's only about a 1/10 of the smoke that was evident on Thursday while going through the gears, eg 2nd to 3rd and less now from 3rd to 4th and none going into 5th. Should I do a complete oil change, air filter, oil filter, etc..and possibly get a recon EGR Valve? I've had the car over 3 years now, put anut 60K on the clock, it does my job, the bodywork is in superb condition, the mileage is approx. 600 to the tank ater my remap when I got it from 115bhp to 139bhp....interior is good I've paid for the EGR valve but the company doesn't have it in stock, so if not required I'll ate my £50 back....

Thanks in advance

Hi, Fuuny you should say that, I had a drive of over 200 miles to do yesterday, and as I was filling up. Spoke to the mechanic wo had replaced he Turbo last Friday. I mentioned to him that there had not been as much, if any black smoke coming from the exhaust since Friday. He also stated that the exhaust could be full of soot and might take few drives to get rid of it all, apart from changing the exhaust. Once I hit the motorway to head south towards Dublin, (keeping within European) speed limit of 74mph, I had about 95 miles non stop at 74mph, and the same coming back. Made a huge difference. I thought the same when I first got it remapped, but it has made a huge difference to the fuel consumption, it's made it better, by approx. 75-90 miles per tank, something thats fairly respectable and noticeable with the amount of miles I travel with heavy tool kits / spare parts carried, etc. in the boot.

Thanks for your replies, it's much appreciated.

My daughter's two year old suzuki swift is very good and maintained by the main dealer, very low mileage. From new it is easy to stall when moving off, or at junctions, or tight manoeuvering sitations. The throttle pedal seems to have more than an inch of free movement before anything happens. The only way to avoid stalling is to use a heavy right foot and high revs. The dealer says there is no adjustment to the slow running etc. other than setting the codes correctly which he does. The dealer also says there have been other similar complaints. Is this something we have to live with and just get used to ? Read more

I have tried to do the BSI reset but I don’t think it worked as I did not get the flashing lights. Please can anyone help as my MOT test is due. Excuse the non-technical terminology!!! Thank you. A dodgy O ring caused the diesel filter in my Octavia to leak for a couple of days, which contaminated the Auxiliary belt (which frayed and was replaced). Do I need to worry about the timing belt, or is it well enough covered? It is not due for a change for 20k. Read more

RevJack

Thanks for that - will get it checked out on Monday. Tempted to just do the timing belt now for peace of mind.

oldroverboy

You can get a replacement key fob if you have an original probably at Timpsons, most high streets, otherwise see HJ's advice section. If you haven't got an original it may well be main dealer job.

That mpg isn't actually that bad for that car!

Switzerland is insanely expensive - I have some friends who work on the Large Hadron Collider and they live in France instead, and just drive in....
