Kernal Panic

My vehicle has been caught in a mobile speed camera a few hundred yards from my home (49 in 40 alledgedly) however we genuingly cannot confirm if it was my wife or I that was driving we were moving equipment from home into my new office and must have made 20+ trips between us on this road. I could just accept the points and fine, but if it wasn't me driving am I not committing a more serious offence?

Any advice greatfully received Read more

In case anyone should think I was advocating 'perverting the course', the first five words of that para were operative - 'if you really don't know....' In other words, if even ''honest factual assessment' can't jog the memory.

>>Car suddenly started shaking violently took it to a small local garage, who said it was a flat tyre on the rear near side
Went to have tyre replaced, found alloy wheel was completely cracked. Had previously been repaired. Had 5 cracks in it.

You admit driving the car when it was 'shaking violently', did you have no concern for safety?...

We have recently hired a car from Avis for 2 weeks in Austria. While we were there, there was a heavy hailstorm which left small marks/dent in the roof and bonnet. Avis state that, as the damage occurred while we had the car, we are responsible for the insurance excess (790 Euros). The Collision Damage Waiver/Theft Protection covers the balance.

The hailstorm was obviously an event over which we had no control or influence and it does not seem reasonable to be held liable for the damage caused by it. This has been put to Avis, but they still say that the excess is payable in accordance with their standard Terms and conditions.... Read more

It would never occur to me not to take seperate insurance to cover the £xxx that I might be liable for on a rental. Avis wanted £130 to cover my liability on a recent 7 day rental - I bought it in UK for £30 thru insurance4carhire

Two day ago on the way to work I came up behind two cars doing 40ish. I slowed and followed the the two cars fo a few hundred yards. We rounded a bend with a long straight ahead with good visibility and no on comming traffic. I waited to see what the two cars in front of me were going to do.

The leading car maintained they're speed of 40ish while the car directly infront of me maintained there road position centrally in their lane.... Read more

"if you think that the other party is entirely to blame for the crash, and it seems from what you have said that you have a good case to argue. Then it is your right to claim that damage from the third party directly, or her insurance comapny if she prefers."

Good advice. Though a lawyer might help, you can do it yourself. If you are out of pocket after your own insurance company has washed its hands of the case (e.g. you lost your excess) you can write letters and make phone calls to the other party and /or their insurance company. I have done so in the past and won....

Would be nice to see a breakdown (no pun intended) of petrol vs diesel within the manufacturers as well, given the common problems of DPF, DMF and turbo failures. Read more

BMW X3 (wonderful car) , 6 weeks old, was parked, engine stopped (stop/start function), we locked the car and went to an event about 200 yards away. It was announced at the event that the car engine was running and please return to the car. The car was still locked when we arrived. We unlocked the car and stopped the engine.

We had the car checked by local agent (very helpful) but they could find no fault. BMW HQ UK was contacted and after 3 days they have just reported that as no fault was found there was nothing they could do.... Read more

I suspect that the car had stopped of its own accord , rather than having pressed the stop button and just jumped out and locked, however i would never expect it to start !

It may be worth trying that scenario to see if there is a programming glitch.

4 months ago the yellow warning light came on. The local independent garage I've used for years checked the fault code, and replaced the catalytic converter. 30 miles later the warning light came on again. 2 further cats, and 2 lambda filters later, and the error persists. Honda have run a diagnostic, and been unable to help further. Now it has failed the MOT, on emissions. The car has done 110,000 and has been a great car to drive. I'd be sorry to have to scrap it. Any thoughts about possible cause?

Many thanks Read more

Thanks - very helpful. I wondered about that, but have to decide whether it's worth the expense...

Dear colleagues,

I would like to ask for an advice. What would be the best way to get to the Luton Airport on 27th. Apparently it's going to be a challenging day for M25 and I should avoid this motorway. Does anybody know what would be a reasonable alternative route? ... Read more
