I wish to have the original aircon system re-commissioned, and since I live in Spain, local professionals do not have much experience of this work. Could anyone please detail a procedure to enable us to regas the system using a currently available refridgerant? As far as I could tell, the compressor - Tecumseh HG 500 - worked correctly prior to dismantling of the system as part of a comprehensive mechanical overhaul of the car. Thanks in anticipation. Ross. Epica 20 vcdi. purchase cost was extremely low at 12 months old, car has served me well, warranty problems all dealt with satisfactorily, dealer service now excellent.
The epica has almost reached 3 years old, had it mot'd pre-emptively to see if any faults would show up while still in warranty, but ZERO, so all is well. Car has full service history so considering extending the warranty for 1 year for the not unreasonable cost of £339 which becomes as original warranty but excluding wear and tear parts. Have asked the dealer a few days ago to deal with it, but no news yet.... Read more
Well Well... still no news from the dealer, will give them a few more days...
About a year ago I had a tiny minor accident, basically I nudged someone at a roundabout. There was no damage to either vehicle, not even a scratch. No claims were made, but i did report it as I was driving a company van at the time and it is policy that even the most minor incident is reported.
I have had to make a claim on my regular policy and realized that i did not disclose this "accident!"
Whats my best course of action? Do I call my insurers and fess up? Or do I leave it and hope it does not come to light?

I wonder if any diesel specialists could give me some pointers please ?
My 1997 TDI simply will not idle at all. It runs PERFECTLY on the road, but any time I have to stop, it dies immediately. The only was I can get going again is to jump out, reprime the system using the priming pump, get in, restart and drive away. I'm having to left foot brake and keep the engine running with my right.
I am guessing that the injector pump is shot, as I believe the idle is all handled within it ?
If it is, maybe it needs to go to the car cemetary in the sky ?
Any help much appreciated........ebt Read more
I agree with both the above. If this is the type of filter with the black button primer on the top, the diaphragm is well known for splitting and letting air in. Probably lucky it's still able to run. Seem to be plenty on ebay, search for, escort diesel primer.
Of course, it could also be one of the filter O-rings, or more unlikely, one of the copper washers on the bolt heads. One tip used to be, smear grease around all the joints on the filter/primer unit. This perfoms a temporary seal for testing, along with using a piece of clear piping from the filter to the pump to check for excess air ingress when the engine is running.
Our first mistake was to take my wife's Mercedes A150 into the local Mercdes main dealer for service. I advised that the air con was not working and they reported that a test has identified a hole in the condenser.
I collected the car and drove the two miles home. There was an odd noise which I realied was the radiator fan running constantly. The next day my wife rang them and told them about it but said we would bring it in when convenient. In the meantime a local a/c specialst replaced the consdenser.... Read more
all garages are hit and miss so I am hardly surprised you experienced similar at a BMW dealership - but I bet you were not asked to 'make an appointment' for the privilege.
Rant over...

Following on from my tyre post I've tracked the noise and vibes to the front wheel bearings, but can't work out if it's the nearside or offside wheel.
Any good tips to do this will be very welcome :-)... Read more
I have noticed that the noise stops when steering to the left and not the right but it still doesn't help.
I only want to change the duff bearing so I might try the hot wheel ...
So, there is a proposal to up fines by 50% and to increase road fund licence or whatever it is dressed up as nowadays by a minimum of £20. Well I'm not going to fall for the one on rfl to spend xthousands extra, including x thousand extra VAT to drop my rfl a bit. The epica has done well, given it's low purchase price, just had 2 weeks of purely urban motoring and minimum36 mpg, normal is 40+ and motorway seems to be about 46, just passed the 1st mot, no problems, so feel no need to change. For the speeding fines etc, (using mobile phones etc) not bothered as now retired, so don't put my self in situations where i'am stressed or in a hurry anymore. Read more
If we cut out personal injury claims and accident management companies, the average cost of a claim would be halved, without any loss of income to body repair shops or reduction in quality of repair.
These 'accident management' companies seem to be the cause of most of the trouble. I know several people involved in quite minor bumps who have been subject to pressure by these kinds of companies to claim for whiplash and suchlike. ...

Re-instating the a/c sysytem on these is no big deal as long as the correct procedure is adopted. The current a/c gas(r134a) can be used without any problems but you will need some retro-fit adaptors for the vacuum/charging process which remain on the car for future maintenance. Also I would recommend renewing the filter/drier assy to one which is r134a compatible. You will also need retro fit oil for the system ,which any good a/c engineer would have.I very much doubt if a Jaguar of this age will have any o ring seals as the pipe joints are flare/compression fit and seal. Also make sure the cooling system is up to scratch,as the new gas runs slightly hotter. The quantity of gas re-fill needs to be reduced by around 10-15%.Tbh I have converted many older cars to the new gas,and have only ever changed seals on components that have been replaced or disturbed during the re-work.All that is needed now is to find an engineer copetent to carry out the work.Buena suerte.hth
