Hi,
The timing belt broke on my clio while driving. The garage fitted new belt just to get the car running and to see if there is more damage to the engine. They charged me very little for this job but they don't do engine repairs. Car now runs but misfires at low revs/in low gears. Obviously some valves were bent. The car did 66000miles.... Read more
car stalled yesterday, battery light came on then power steering seized, now no lights on dash, elec windows not working, car wants to turn over but not firing? exterior lights idicators etc all work . RAC came out checked battery no concerns, and checked fuses which appeared all were live? had to be towed home as falt could not be diagnosed?
Anyone have any advise, Thanks... Read more
You seem to have lost a main power supply .Possible ignition switch failure?Have the fuses by the battery been checked? This model is not too complicated as far as the electrics are concerned.hth
My passats trip computer that displays current MPG/overall MPG, miles travelled, miles left in tank etc etc, has suddenly started to reset itself and have no memory. It resets itself every time you turn ignition off.
I have recently had the service warning turned off on the car and I cant remember if it started doing this immediately after the service warning or not. This may have nothing to do with it.... Read more
Mine has 2 mem settings (Passat 130PD Highline). R U sure you are not just mixing up the 2 memory settings, mem 1 (donated by a little 1 in the display) is accumalative for the trip only but I think resets after the ignition is off for 2 hrs. Mem 2 is accumalative for all time or until reset. Switching between 1 & 2 is done my tapping briefly the reset button under the stalk. Holding the same button down will reset whichever memory is selected to 0. Think I have that the right way round !
Reversing out this morning, I scraped the front wheel quite badly against the garden wall. At one point I was jammed against the wall. I tried forward, reverse, then finally forward to get away. Front bumper and front wheel trim are badly scuffed.
The car drove OK , then after 20 miles the engine light started flashing. The engine sounded ropey and struggled to go up hills... Read more
My daughter has just purchased this car, with 50,000 mls. on it, and I notice there is quite a bit of vibration in 3rd. gear when under load - is this anything to be concerned about? (No noticable vibration in any other gear). Read more
Sorry, neglected to mention that the vibration is "through the gear-stick".
to cut along story short, my timing belt snapped 2 days before it was booked in to get changed :0/ had it towed to a garage (this was last april). they had it 15 weeks trying to rebuild the engine. finally get it back. 1st time i take it on a long trip (70 miles) 1 side of the engine drops because a bolt snaps. the aa tow it back to the same garage. i ask them to check the timing as the cover is dislodged. use it for another 1500 miles/5 months & now it has bent valves & they want another £1000 to fix it. it's out of it's 3 month warrenty given for the rebuild & the original bill was £1300. i can't for the life of me find my receipt & i'm sure if the garage ask me to produce it & i can't, they'll deny all knowledge of my car being in their garage. the garage owner is telling me that the problem has been caused due to the bad weather & that it was frozen but surely it shouldn't have left the garage originally without enough anti freeze in it. the car isn't my everyday car as i have a large family. we only use it for long journeys & i check the oil / water before each trip. i haven't had to top the water up so cannot have diluted the anti freeze that he should have put in after the enitial rebuild. it is currently at another garage as when i called the aa out the said starter motor problem. it goes to the auto electrics, new starter motor, still doesn't start but now 'turns over'. they send it to the garage where it is now & i owe them £150 for them to tell me bent valves. gutted!! any advice would be much appreciated as i do not have the money for another big repair. kind regards. x Read more
It might be the shortened version but I can't get more that two lines in!...

I have just changed the alternator on my 806, after refitting and charging the battery I managed to get the car started [after a few alarm/immob issues!] I switched the car off ok, then restarted to ensure it would, but now it wont switch off, I have to stall it.
Anyone had similar problems? got any cures?? Seems one thing after another with my Pug, always electrical!!... Read more
I would go with the fuel solonoid, on older pumps a simple job but if yours has a keypad it means removing the pump as the solonoid is buried in armour plating. You could fit an external solonoid but it would need to be very close to the pump and very airtight - or just keep stalling it.
Several problems with this car all started at the same time.
Firstly, when cold the engine starts first time and the car drives as you would expect. Once warm however, the car goes into limp mode and is difficult to get over 30 mph unless going down hill. Also when warm the car will not start first time and run. It will start but stops almost immediately. This must be repeated two or three times before the engine runs normally. At about the same time we noticed an oil leak –not sure from where- and found the oil level seriously low. Topping up did not cure the problems. No warning lights are showing so, can we have your opinion as to the cause of our problem please? Read more
If the autobox is going into linp mode do not drive it as it WILL burn out 3rd gear
It may have a small air leak & when warm as the mixture is weaker than when cold the tick over is unstable....

The car is only an 8v and replacing the cylinder head is a pretty easy job for any competent mechanic. It is an interference engine so you could have bent a valve, but i would be certainly investigating if the timing belt is actually fitted correctly as one tooth out could cause this problem.
Secondly have a compression test done. Bent valves or knackered seats would show up as low compression on the affected cylinder :D
