stood for 2 weeks in the snow, started first time. Thirty miles later after much needed supermarket shop, car starts then immediately cuts out. Many tries later it'll start but so frustrating. Seems like no fuel getting through . Battery has been checked and is fine. advice appreciated. Cheers Read more

My car won't start. I put the key in the ignition and turn it to position 1&2 then wait for the dashboard lights to go out then turn to position 3 to start. All I get is one loud click then nothing. There is no noise from the starter motor and obviously the engine doesn't turn over.

I tried jump leads from a friends 2.5ltr diesel car and even with that I got the same result. Just a loud click and nothing. Any ideas?

I don't know if it's a sticking starter motor, the starter solenoid or something altogether different.

I don't want to go ahead and replace the starter motor only to find out that it's something else. Does anyone know any trucks or tips to work out what the problem is before I blindly throw money at it? Read more

Hi, We've got the same problem, I wondered if you had got this resolved. Cheers Kristina

My headlights are constantly misting up on the inside to a greater or lesser degree.

I have tried blowing hot air through the headlights with the bulbs removed this clears the moisture but it returns over night. I removed the units sealed the edges with silicone sealant dried them out again and it returned once more. My local garage said run the car with main beams on for 1/2 an hour but that did not remove all of the moisture, only in the area of the main beam bulb. have you any suggestions I do not want to pay £400 for new units there must be an easier way the car is 6 years old and apart from this problem the lights are pristine. I seem to have cured mine by drilling some very small holes 2.5mm at the base of the front cover to allow the unit to breath a little no doubt technically this is wrong but has worked on my last two Mercedes TweedleDee

So here's the story,,,car died on me without warning while driving, started up again after a minute, drove for another half mile then died again.Went back to car after an hour, started fine, died after 1 mile, started after 10 minutes, drove for 1 mile, died, etc etc.. Got it home, noticed throttlebody flange was perished so got new one,(old one had actually split into two parts!) fitted it, same problem remained, started fine then died after half mile.Fuel pump fuse fine, petrol coming out of hose at throttlebody when engine turned over at key,so think fuel pump ok, getting a spark ok,(recent new dist. cap and rotor, new plugs and leads) battery fine. Cleaned out throttlebody with carb cleaner, cleaned various earth connections, noticed broken wire on two-pin connector on engine block.below flexi pipe, under left hand side of throttlebody, fixed that, re-assembled everything, car started fine, left it running til warm then switched off, wouldnt start again. Aaaargh! So next on my list is the ECU relay,no.30. I have a new one in my hand, but looking at the relay board, position 3 where the manual says it is, and also the guy at local VW dealer confirmed after giving him chassis no..is empty! Can anyone shed some light on this? Fuel pump relay seems fine, although I am replacing that tomorrow as well. Any suggestions welcome! I need my car..... Read more

I have exactly the same problem with a 1995 1.8 VW Vento 1.8 (ABS engine code). In fact I've just replaced all of the same parts, including the ECU and coil/electronic ignition, but still can't solve the cutting out problem ! Did anybody find a solution to this previous thread ? - getting desperate now !!

The article posted about this on the HJ homepage raises some interesting questions.

I was astounded to read that, of the 580,754 three year old cars which failed their first MOT test, 271,567 failed on lighting/signalling - which as far as I can see basically means a blown bulb?... Read more

It doesn't happen - there are pulling a fast one. Beams adjusted on stiff threads do not just wander out of alignment - you'd only need a tweak if there had been some sort of front-end impact.

Try marking the alignment screws beforehand to see if they've been touched.......

Hope someone can help. I've read the other discussions about the focus instrument panel problems and I am just hoping someone can help as I am not sure whether this is the same problem.

Last Friday the instrument panel on my 1.4 02 reg focus died. None of the dials moved and the little electronic display also failed to work, but the lights around the top of the panel still worked, this was when the engine was started. Since it had been sitting in the snow for a week since it was last used I just put it down to the cold. Anyway went shopping, car got nicely warmed up, no loss of power in the engine at anytime. After the car had been standing at the front door for about 10 mins when I got back, I tried the car again and everything was working as it should. Tried it again today and no dials working again. Any tips please. Read more

This looks like classic focus instrument pod failure and it is in the right year of manufacture.Main dealers were replacing these for a fixed fee of £99.You will need to check with Ford.hth

Interesting article in the German press today where it states the the introduction of particle filters is actually causing an increase in dangerous polutants in cities.

the Nox emissions are always higher for higher tempreture running diesels and the higher turbo pressures & loads increase these even more. the reason for the EGR valve is too cool the combustion tempreture to reduce Nox emissions but with so many valves closed off or disconected who knows how much extra Nox we are producing.
I think EGR should be part of the MOT test.
As for DPF's the amount of equipment on the market now for cleaning them makes the mind boggle and at what cost to the enviroment.
£15-20K for a DPF cleaner and how is all the old matter going to be dealt with! how much polution is caused building one of these & how much CO2 emmited to run one !
see how big this one is for commercials & then smaller ones for LV

Thanks for your advice and I agree but I live on the Isle of Wight where we have I Mercedes dealer and from my experience over 20 years I have to be really desperate to go there. TweedleDee

The car has done 36k and is under so-called warranty.

Last month it was towed into a Mazda main dealer with the sump oil level very high, loss of power, uneven idle, and run-on after switch off (no dash warnings). The dealer reconfigured the injectors, made a service update to the ECU for the DPF warning setting.... Read more

Have you had the oil changed yet? Oil + Diesel engine lubrication = potential engine failure. Don't rely on the warranty as the first thing they do is check for diesel contamination (or a history of contamination ) before turning down your very expensive claim. If you haven't had it changed I'd get it done BEFORE your trip.

This is a common issues with many makes of diesel cars with DPFs. The over-fueling cycle that is "supposed" to burn off the soot in the DPF can cause diesel to run down the bores into the sump. You can also get very poor fuel consumption during this process.

I have 195/50 Dunlop SP Sport tyres on 16" rims and the road noise at any speed over abour 55 mph is excessive. I would like to change tyres to a quieter make and would even consider changing to say 14" rims with 185/60 tyres to keep the rolling circumference approx the same. Has anyone any ideas on quieter tyre brands or if higher profile tyres on 14" rims would make a significant reduction in noise? Read more

Thanks this sounds an excellent scheme which I shall try when the weather is a bit better!
