Interesting article in the German press today where it states the the introduction of particle filters is actually causing an increase in dangerous polutants in cities.

I read the article but what is he answer getting writ of filters to stop excaust gasses which are bad for us?

We could do with a specialist doctor or surgeon who deal with certain cancers to talk to us on this forum.

Reading the article it seems the DPF is an ill conceived piece of kit.

The implications are that Nox emissions have shot up - this is probably because no-one ever thought about what was happening during the regen process beyond particulates - the DPF gets stinking red hot and voila you have an instant Nox generator! Not picked up on emmisions testing as the regen doesnt occur during an MOT test..

Whoops!

And evidence that DPF dont reduce particulates - just store them up and release them later.....

Unfortunately, as the short sighted beurocrats in Brussels seemed to have legislated mandatory DPF (as they did with CATs), we will probably see compulsory AdBlue systems added (post DPF) soon....now that would be taking the p*** literally!!

You are making a good point brum.

The gasses are still there just released later.Lets see what the engineers come up with for the future.

the Nox emissions are always higher for higher tempreture running diesels and the higher turbo pressures & loads increase these even more. the reason for the EGR valve is too cool the combustion tempreture to reduce Nox emissions but with so many valves closed off or disconected who knows how much extra Nox we are producing.
I think EGR should be part of the MOT test.
As for DPF's the amount of equipment on the market now for cleaning them makes the mind boggle and at what cost to the enviroment.
£15-20K for a DPF cleaner and how is all the old matter going to be dealt with! how much polution is caused building one of these & how much CO2 emmited to run one !
see how big this one is for commercials & then smaller ones for LV
