I have a 2003 Ford Mondeo ST220 that has been runnung fine (and fully servivced) for many years. However in the the last few months it developed a potentially dangerous fault. On occassions the engine will cut out whilst driving (dashboard lights remain on but engine mangement light remains off) .
Twice the car has restarted whilst slowing down before we came to halt and once the car did not recover at all. Once the car has stopped it cant be restarted for about 30-45 minutes. The engine turns over and the starter motor will engage (tried it in first gear and it pulls the car forward slightly) but it wont fire up into life. Also on three occassions after driving the car fine from cold in the morning, when returning to the car it wont start with the same symptons.... Read more

On returning to my 3-year old Astra Estate at the local supermaket car park, I found a photocopied A4 leaflet stuffed under the wiper headed 'Vauxhall Customer Notice - Important Recall Notice'. It went on ' We have checked with the Vauxhall database and believe that your vehicle is due a manufacturer recall on a specific maintenance or safety issue. This recall work will be carried out completely free of charge. Please contact us on the number below so we can explain the exact details of your vehicle recall notice and book your vehicle in at your earliest convenience' .......... It then gave the correct contact details for my local main Vauxhall dealer.
It just strikes me as bit odd that there should be a recall notice stuffed under my windscreen wiper by someone stumbling across my particular car in a supermarket car park. Even more so considering that my car has been serviced from birth and had its first Mot with the aforementioned local main dealer. They have all the records.... Read more
Just to bring you up to date on this one, I arranged to take the car into the main dealer at 10.30 yesterday morning – “It’ll only take half an hour or so, sir”

Hello all
I'm shamelessly looking for your expert advice....... Read more
Ours was fine for carrying everything a baby needs, including four adults and their luggage and all the baby stuff for a trip abroad when our daughter was 6 months old. Then she reached 3 and the lack of rear leg room in the A3 became apparent, she is average height.
She couldn't sit in her car seat without having her legs bent, otherwise she kicked the passenger seat, which was already set a long way forward - so far that with a passenger in the seat looking to the left was difficult at junctions, I couldn't put the handbrake on and the seatbelt clip on the passengers seat fouled on the centre armrest.
Our Aygo has much more rear legroom than the A3 Sportback had!
So boot is fine, but check the legroom with the passenger seat set in your usual position.
We read a lot about the weaknesses and shortcomings of dual mass flywheels, especially in diesel cars.
I've often wondered what the problems can be. I think I maybe finding out.
My Vectra 1.9cdti 150, 07 reg, has just clocked about 62,000 miles. Most of these on fast dual carriageway/motorway runs. It's been serviced to book but I have noticed a "bit of a rumble" from the clutch area when engine is ticking over and out of gear with clutch up.
I mentioned it to the dealer at its 60,000 mile service - i just said "I think there is a bit of a rumble", and they say a new flywheel is needed. Quote is about £1,200. Just wondering whether this sounds about right?
Also needed is a new inlet manifold/emissions sensor because the emissions warning light came on recently ("about £320, sir), and a clutch return spring, as the pedal creaks a bit.
Bother.
But silly question as this is, what is it about these flywheels? - not just on Vauxhalls? Read more
The £1,200 should include a new clutch kit including the infamous hydraulic clutch slave cylinder ..... or it should do as so much of the cost is labour to get at the clutch/flywheel area.
Model 2004, 2.2 TiD. I have problem is the Engine Light is on after checking.. The light has come on countless times. After long journeys it'll come on and stay on for longer and loss of power. If I park the car for while, It will be back to normal. My friend a litter bit know the car. He said, It could be Air Flow Meters problem. Does anybody has same problem? How do you fixed it? Can I do it for DIY? Please advice ! thanks ! Read more
anybody could help me?
Need to replace an alternator on the above. A quick look and it would appear the A/C compressor and its pipe work also has to come off to gain access to the alternator fixings. I am thinking it might be possible to slacken the compressor fixings and hold it off its mounting just enough to give access to the alternator fixing without disconecting any of the pipe work and having to re-gas the A/C.
Anyone got any experiences/thoughts/comments before I make the call? Read more
Hello Ted,
Can you tell me a little more about how you got this done? I need to take out the alternator in a 2006 FIAT Grande Punto, also a 1.2 8v with aircon and it looks damn near impossible, i say damn near because i will have to get it done one way or the other but would like to speak to you about how you did yours....

If your having these faults now and its difficult to get them repaired imagine what it will be like when the vehicle is out of warranty. Buy cheap pay twice
You are right! However, I tend to change cars before the Warranty is up. In any case, in future, whenever this happens inside the first six to twelve months I intend to reject the vehicle and insist on it....

While the belts can last 100k, the plastic tensioners can often fail by 60k. I would personally change at around the 5yr/50k mark.
There seems to be a lot of conflicting advice about when to renew the timing belt and associated parts (water pump, tensioner etc.) My VW Golf owners handbook states:-
CHECK at 60,000 miles then every 20,000 miles. REPLACE every 80,000 miles.... Read more
I would have the time belt replaced after 4 years.Even on a low mileage there is still wear and tear stop start driving.
tuning can greatly improve the driving experiance if done correctly - and usually after a lot of research. The ST220 is hard to tune - mainly due to the catalytic converters being housed within the exhaust manifold!
When I tune a car its not usually for outright power but to improve engine responiveness throughout the existing power range - this usually only results in a minor improvement to overall power. In my opinion the most needed adjustment to the ST220 is the suspension - its just to soft for a car that fast.
