bought a golf today that seems great but I noticed a strange whirring/whining noise from the front end when gas pedal is down at 50mph or more - when I take foot off the gas the noise disappears. (sadly didn't go over 40 on test drive) This car didn't have much history, so unsure about cambelt (its done 73k) any ideas please? Have I been stuffed? Read more
Hi john,
I am an overseas student. Recently bought a peugeot 406 HDI 2.0 Y reg off a dealers. For some reason, everytime I start the engine, this Antipollution fault comes at the display for a few seconds and then vanishes off. And the check engine lights lit as well through out the whole drive. Car runs fine though. I have not had any problems with it so far. Recently got the engine serviced. Told my mechanic about it he says he has no clue whatsoever! I read all the posts related to this but couldn't conclude anything. Thought, I'd start my own thread. What do you reckon I should do (in a lay-man terms please). I am bad with technical words and phrases :( ..... Read more
thanks for the suggestion mate, it's just I have recently had my MOT taken. It passed it without any faults. The only thing that worries me is that at time clutch paddle when pressed down, doesnt come back up rather stays a little pressed and gear shifting is affected badly. This anti pollution fault light comes on everytime i start the engine, or If i come to a stand still and open my door etc. I have to go scotland next week and I am seriously not sure if I should take my car or not caz at them moment it's not giving me a tough time. Also, I am a little car fanatic. I want my car to be perfectly fine. These warning lights disturb me. :(
How easy is it to drive into London on a Sunday and is it possible to park all day (relatively) cheaply and securely? Coming from Southampton, btw and would be making an early start to arrive 9-ish. It's over £90 for a family of four on the train, £80 if I buy a railcard.
Cheers... Read more
It won't cost over £90 by train. The "Groupsave" ticket lets four adults travel together for £63, valid on any train at weekends. No need to book in advance or buy a railcard.
Parking regs in London vary from borough to borough and even from street to street. There are places where you can park for free but general advice is useless as there are so many variations.
I have fitted side facing seats and rear side window panels to my LR. Do I have to notify the DVLA and do they change the Registration document from van to car and change the road tax. Also what are the insurance implications? Read more

The timing chain on my honda accord 56 plate has gone noisy which it has now done 90,000 miles. It makes a rattle noise when idle and still but whilst driving you cant hear a thing.
I just got the car last year. So i brang the car into the Honda dealer and they investigated and stripped the engine to check what the noise was. They came back to me and told me it was the timing chain and it would need replacing they quoted me 1,599 pounds to get it replaced. They then gave me a second surprise call and told me that with the timing chain the injector needs to be replaced (which is part of the work of the timing chain, which is what they told me because apprantly whilst the timing chain is replaced the injectors easily snaps? i wonder if its true?) . They contacted honda and they announced that honda would not contribute to the costs of the repair as they would only cough up if it was an 04 / 05 plate diesel as there was some sort of recall but not on any of the later models. Please help me give me some advice, i do apologise if it has already been posted but i couldnt find any solution.... Read more
Dont know if this is of any use to you but i own a 2005 accord (uk impoted to ireland) with 108500k mls on the reader , high enough i spose , but i did a bit of research on this year and model of car and found out that the chain does give problems with the earlier model , ie 2004 and 2005 models , i rang honda uk and honda Ireland here and found out a few things you can get your timing chain , oil pump chain , tensioner, gears on the cams and crank shaft and all 4 injectors replaced as some sort of a recall/ warrenty/ pan european/ upgrade that honda did for this car but there are several things that must comply like it must have less than 125,000 k Mls on the clock and have a full Honda service record up to date and they will do it all for free, I just got mine done as it was rattling all the time , only thing was i had to pay for labour and new oil as my record was not a Honda Service record but did have a full service history, also there is a recall on the headlights upgrade as in the form of putting some clips on the headlights , again all warrenty and free of charge , I have a terrible wobble in the steering wheel which also runs into the body of the car and my buttt too , seems like my inner cv is gone , so honda say , seems to be another quirk this car has but is not warrented or anything . Mind you , since i got mine back from the garage (only 2 days ago) i have this horrible wheezing sound that gets louder when you rev higher , not there at tick over but does sound like a tight belt or something , only put a new belt on it about 2 weeks ago , Wonder did Honda disturb something when they replaced the belt?????? , they left me with a nasty oil leak dripping from the timing chain/ crank area , drips on the driveway everywhere since i got it back , but will be knocking on their door first thing Tuesday Morn to give them a piece of mind .

Hi All, monday morning I went to start my car, heard an almightly grinding/banging noise from under the bonnet. Turned the engine straight off. Tried again, similar noise, just less severe. Turned engine straight off again.
Went to start it last night, turned key, heard a clunk and dash lights all went out, as well as interior light. Got RAC man out and he tried jump leads- nothing, still only a clunk and the lights went out.... Read more
Its gone, sorry. Got £450 so fairly chuffed.
I am taking delivery of a new V70 with 225/50 R17W tyres on 17" rims in December. I want to buy a set of extra rims to fit with winter tyres, but alloys are prohibitively expensive so am contemplating buying steel rims. If I buy 16" rims, what size tyres do I need and would the new combination affect driving characteristics/handling? All advice appreciated. Read more
You might try www.mytyres.co.uk/Cold_Weather_Tyres.html - they have packages of steel rims with winter/cold weather tyres. They also claim to match the car reg with the correct tyre. No conection except buying 4 Nokians last winter.
Hi there my partner has a 1999, Toyota Yaris 1.0GS, 154000 miles, currently travelling 500-600 miles per week due to commute to work. I am currently checking the oil on a weekly basis and most weeks i find myself replenshing the oil to full mark with the car using 1/4-1/2 from the full mark on the dipstick is this excessive? Some people have said the engine is on its way others have said try a thicker oil 10W/30 currently using 5W/30 semi synthetic. Prior to this the car was mainly used for town driving using little or no oil, your comments and opinions would be much appreciated so i can decide whether to budget for a new car or not.Cheers. Thanks a lot for your reply.
I have checked for leaks when car has been parked on drive etc, non visible also car was recently serviced and he said there were no oil leaks....
I was driving behind a vehicle doing approx 30mph in a 40mph limit. After a while I could see a large gap in the oncoming traffic so I decided to overtake. At this point the vehicle had crept up to about 32mph.
My acceleration appeared to be a lot slower than I expected. As I reached 40mph I realised that the other driver had accelerated too. Some oncoming vehicles appeared at this point, but I was past the half way point so there was no point going back. Once I was in front of the other vehicle it matched my speed (40mph). Going back didn't seem like a good idea because the other car would probably returned back to 30mph which would mean I would need to do no more than 20mph to get back in safely, and if there were vehicles behind us the it could get quite dangerous. So I gave a left signal for this vehicle and for the oncoming vehicles. The driver only needed to lift of, but he still maintained his speed. When I didn't have much road left I pulled in, which made the other driver brake hard and flash their lights. I had left enough space so that the oncoming vehicles didn't need to change their speed and they didn't flash their lights at me.... Read more
Ah, Yes
I failed to make it clear that on our local roads 50/55mph is the norm, therefore I am driving at the speed of the other road users, the ones in front of me. Therefore I CANNOT be obstructing anyone behind me....
my customer has brought in his 307 hdi he says he pulled up at home and stopped engine then he came out 15min later and it wouldnt start he flatend the battery trying and put car into economy mode so no windows central locking or nothing will now work ive tried toget the engine started but failed ive checked all the obvios stuff levels fuses etc so i plugged it in to my snap on computer and varios fault codes come up 1 was low pressure pump malfunction which was p1180 so iremoved the sender unit only to find that it does not have an in tank pump? another fault code was p1210 which is fuel injector pressure high also p1176 which is a cam calibration fault? also p0191 which is fuel rail pressure sensor fault so i replaced this still with no luck so i then removed the fuel filter and it had loads of paper mush in the bottom and also removed the fuel pressure regulator which seemed fine ive tryed testing the fuel rail sensor but im only getting 5v on 1 of the outside pins ? any ideas as it has my head batterd thankyou

Check the engine undertray is fixed securely. Might be being caught by the wind and flapping around.
