I have been repairing a cambelt failure on this van and was having trouble with the tensioner (the tab for setting the right tension was bending when turning over on the starter). After speaking to a mechanic yesterday, it seems the crankshaft gets very stiff at certain points (about every 2 1/2 turns) putting too much tension on the tensioner and bending the tab.

As the fuel pump is chain driven by the crank and the camshaft is belt driven by the pump, im beginning to think it could be a damaged chain or sprocket. Could this have happened with a cambelt failure? Read more

I have been having the same problem as you are discribing.

I have repaired my cam belt failure and the engine runs fine at low rev's....

after a short period of driving brakes begin to bind and heat up. Further driving will heat pads and brakes extreme. Pedal moves up and begins to get tight requiring minimal pressure to syop completly, If slowing down at about 5mph brakes will self engage and bring vehicle to a stop then partially release. have tried complete brake bleed and fluid replacement, caliper replace, calip check, replaced proportioning valve, checked master cylinder, replaced ABS, now at a loss for ideas. Hi.

I just got my car back from a repair shop after an accident on my front right hand fender (corner), got suspension fixed, controll arms replaced. What's worring me though is the intermittent tapping noise that's coming from the engin as it idles. It sounds as a loose bolt, knocking against something, I have tried to find out where its coming from by using a stethoscope, listened to various areas, parts to no avail. Could you please give me some possible leads before I take it to the dealer. The car drives fine, the noise does not get worse with higher revolutions, it stays constant. Any suggestions?, highly appreciated.... Read more

Thanks Peter, I'll have this checked by an Audi Technician to put my mind at ease.

Ford Focus - the speedo, rev counter, temp gauge and fuel gauge suddenly go to zero while driving and then come back to normal. Occasionally the engine warning light will come on for a minute and sometimes the ignition warning light does the same.

Engine performance is not affected.... Read more

This is a common fault affecting Focuses on this period, due to dry soldered joints. Happened to my 2003 TDCi. Ford repaired it out of warranty for a subsidised cost of £100 (complete new instrument binnacle fitted).

I often get bad condensation on the inside of the windows in the mornings. In bad frosts the whole of screen is covered in ice inside. The car doesn't smell damp and there is no sign of moisture in the carpets. Any ideas? Read more

Here is one in the eye for all you Renault Bashers out there.Just got back from my local indie garage my 1994 Clio with 111,000 appprox miles on the clock. Took the stroppy teenager in for service and M.O.T told the garage not to bother if needs lots spent on it. Garage called and passed o.k. only needing small weld on the exhaust total cost £267.00 including test. and service No rust issues on the car although rear wheelarches starting to look tatty may get can of paint out at some stage this winter . Looking forward to another years cheap depreciation free motoring.

I agree with the OP - yes, it cost around £270 to get it serviced and have an MoT, but the fact that you know its history and have looked after it is worth far more. I run an 11 year old car but still make sure I get it serviced properly at the correct intervals. In the long run I'm sure it works out cheaper to keep an older car in good running order than to neglect maintenance or scrap it simply because it falls below a certain value. If I ran a car on the basis that I can't spend more money on it than it's worth, I'd have to get rid of it after filling up with 10 tanks of petrol!

Got a Golf with just under 50K on the clock.Had new brakes and discs on the front 6months ago. They are not VW ones and they squeak when the brakes are applied. Not long after it developed a droning noise, sounds like its coming from the rear. The noise gets louder especially if you go into a roundabout.Took it to a garage and the two very qualified chaps said they were not convinced it was a bearing.Told me to go away and put a few more miles on it and go back.Does it sound like a bearing has gone? Thanks for your help. Read more

I had a similar problem a few months back, (Octavia 1.9 tdi) actually changed one bearing before getting onto the forums. A very common problem which sounds exactly like bearing wear is uneven tyre wear on the rears, giving a saw tooth wear pattern on the inside edge of the tyre. You can check if it's this by changing your rear tyres onto the front and seeing if the noise changes. I noticed a very pronounced increase and steering roughness when I did this.

New tyres completely solved the problem, no noise, no vibration, so check this first. Affects across the VAG range.

First problem of any sort since new 2007.
There are three 'cigarette lighter' contacts in the CR-V, one at the base of the binacle, one in the boot wall and one in the 'cubbyhole' in the central console between the two front seats.
It's this last one between the seats I can't find in the manual. Neither can the dealer, who has kindly offered to find it for me.
The one in the boot is the only one I can find anywhere in the manual.
I can't find the main one in the binacle either, but that's still working so far.

Can anyone help with this?

Was it fitted by a previous owner to feed a phone charger or something similar if so it more than likely fed from nearest 12v supply.Connect a test bulb to it and pull out fuses till it goes out.

My Pajero only likes BP diesel. Put anything else in and the engine management light comes on and the engine gets a "diesel" rattle. I've had new injectors but that didn't fix it and a new pump is a lot of money.

Does anyone have a similar problem or does anyone know what is in BP that is different from other fuels? Read more

depending on where the Pajero was originally imported from the pump settings are different for different fuel ranges & climate. I have come across this issue many times before and there used to be some diesel specialist around that used to change the pump calibrations to suit UK derv.
