In cold mornings, my car starts OK but the engine sign stays on and it chokes along with smoke trailing behind for about 5 to 10 minutes, depending on how cold it is. After that, when I turn off and start again, the engine sign will usually go off and the car will be fine for the rest of the day. If the sign is still on, I'll have to choke along a bit longer. Have done a diagnostic test in a local garage but nothing unable to locate anywhere faulty. A mechanic suspects the fuel pump but not sure. Please advise. Read more

Hello have you tried a higher nectane fuel give the car a good run.Or put a dose of millers additive for the injectors. Before you spend any money on a fuel pump.

Until I get the 7 seater, I've got a Passat 1.9 TDI Highline on an 09 plate. Cracking car, no bother and still waiting for its first service (18 months old, 16,000 miles)....

Having just got my two renewal notices I started to wonder how they calculate the premium before NCB. When I first took to the road over thirty years ago (two years on two wheels first) I used to go to the local broker. He had a number of "books" from the various insurance companies. After checking out the insurance group for the car he got the base premium from a matrix of group vs. age. There were a few exceptions such as no drivers under 25, or refer to company for some of the highest groups or if the person had points on their licence. However there seems to be nothing like that these days that you can refer to. If they feel they may lose the business some are willing to reduce the premium followed sometimes by a large jump the following year. This has all come to mind as the main car went up around around 30% as expected as it is five groups higher. However the second car virtually doubled and it is only group 3.... Read more

I have now renewed the main car with the original company as price comparisons all came out higher! The second car was over 50% cheaper with another broker (all done over the phone). With price comparison I got quotes both higher and lower than the original - makes no sense at all!

My Leon just celebrated its 3rd birthday with an MOT pass - but only just. Advisory note says 23% front brake imbalance and mechanic was surprised I hadn't noticed pull to one side. I have since tried normal, firm and emergency stops with no grip on the steering wheel and the car pulls up dead straight. Is there a system in the car compensating for the imbalance, or do I wait until next MOT/service? Read more

There's a geometry Vauxhall advertised years ago called 'offset steering geometry' that, I suspect, all manufacturers use.

The pivot point of the steering for the wheel is outside the centre line of the wheel thereby 'self steering' the car to the side with the least braking, thus effectively negating the effect of braking imbalance.

Does anyone know or can anyone point me in the right direction to find out if a Focus described above which normally has wheel trims could have been specified when new with Ford's Alloy wheels?

I've just checked my old Mk1 Focus brochure and the 15" alloy wheels found on the Zetec were not a listed option for the LX.

That doesn't mean a garage couldn't have fitted them as a special request though, as mentioned above.

If you read around on the Focus forums, you'll find that many CL and LX owners upgrade their steel wheels to Zetec alloys at a later date.

I am looking at buying my first brand new car, as opposed to the old bangers I usually buy, and as I have cash and no part exchange I have taken Honest John's advice and am looking at buying from an Internet Broker.

There are so many to choose from I am hoping for some advice or details of recent personal experiences from other forum users to assist me. Autoebid usually comes out cheapest but the actual mechanics of how it works makes me uneasy so any experiences of this company would be especially welcome. Read more

Apologies - a post from MLJ seems to have been hidden accidentally alongside one which was almost certainly advertising.

MLJ said "Brother-in-law bought his A4 from Carfile, no problems and full of praise. They are offering between 1.5K and 2K off the Nissan at preent. Lots of folk visit their local dealer armed with an online quote: some dealers will match it if they can."...

Given all the recent discussion about this topic, it seems clear that a simple method needs to be applied to this problem, which could please the majority. This would need the cooperation of all concerned, the land owners, parking companies and motorists. This I see as the sticking point, will the parking companies be keen in case it endangers their revenues? However the land owners employ them and as such can dictate the terms. Simply we all pay up front a nominal charge to park the car. Maximum 4 hours, the first 2 hours would be free and the whole fee is refunded when you pay for your shopping at the retailer involved if you are within the 2 hours. The fee is not refunded if you go beyond 2 hours up to 4 hours. If you go over 4 hours you are caught at the till and pay extra parking at a set rate per 1/2 hour over, up to 6 hours. Over 6 hours you taking the p*** or something very unfortunate has occured, either way you are then obliged to pay a late charge, which would be worth taking to court because the situation is in favour of the land owner/parking enforcer. It is not perfect and always someone will abuse it but it does meet the needs of the majority of fair minded people. The parking companies can make there share by monitoring the car parks, collecting the cast from meters and enforcing charges that they have a good chance of winning. The land owners/retailers get happier customers too, how many now avoid certain retailers because of private parking problems? As I said not perfect but you cannot legislate for every eventuality. Sensible comments and suggestion are most welcome. Cheers Concrete Read more

Hello Concrete

Again what you are saying makes a lot of sense,These cowboys have a vested interest in keeping this going. There is a argument that if you park on somebodys private property you are looking for trouble. There have been a lot of discussions about this and like you are saying a lot of people would be happier if this problem got sorted ones and for all.I believe there is some new legislation coming out soon regarding finding people over £250 and directing them to cash machines or clamping there cars. There was a situation here four lads in a car where just about to be clamped. They got out the car big lads and the clamper scarped.Thats how much the law is behind them they are bullys.Good at putting the fear into old people and women....
