Mumsie has a Volvo V50 T5 AWD fitted with Bridgestone Turanzas which have been on the car for about 2 years and have covered 10,000 miles max. They are wearing well and evenly but are definitely "part worn".

Today, one of these tyres failed in operation and got shredded.... Read more

I'm sorry - this is probably unhelpfully ambiguous but I once heard of someone who wrecked the centre diff on an XC70 by changing front and rears seperately. They were supposed to be done as a full set of 4, apparently.

I recently received a parking ticket for an offence that I believe I did not commit.

My vehicle was parked in a residents parking bay where non-residents are granted a 2 hour parking window with a further no return within 2 hour restriction (hope that makes sense).... Read more

Hi all, just a quick question, sent a friend to Halfords in Dundee today (as I was at work) to purchase a new battery for my 2003 1.8 TDCI Focus. The car has been sat for the best part of 2 years whilst i worked out of the country so serviced it but the battery was knackered. He came back with a 540A cranking battery for a shocking £95 (Calcium Based as it should be), Fitted it but car failed to crank anywhere near fast enough for a start, Hooked it up to to a corsa diesel and gave it 20mins and the crank was a little better but still not enough to start.

My question is - Is the battery capable of cranking this car and if so what would cause the sluggish crank speed?

Many thanks

How many miles has your car done?If mileage is getting on a bit/been stood, then worth replacing all glow plugs(bit fiddly,£12ea) and removing and cleaning up starter motor(easy)

A mate`s got the`04 estate and it still sounds slow even after a new battery.Wonder if they fitted the correct size too? Will check when he visits....

Was in Wilkinsons store today & noticed they had Carlube Tripple R fully synthetic oil on offer, 4l for £7.98 which seemed like a bargain.

Meets the requirements of: API SM/CF, ACEA A3 B3 B4, VW502.00 / 505.00... Read more

They had 3 different types.

One marketed for older engines which I didn't take any details of, 0W 30 fully synth in a silver pack & 5W 40 fully synth in a purple pack which is the one I bought, well 3 packs in fact....

Er, yes! Old ones are interesting but slow, expensive and tend to rust. Also they are a bit small for camping. Later ones are better but ignore the VW badge and you will get far more for your money. Like Golfs you are paying for the badge and nothing else! Read more

I think fast tracking at theme parks and other attractions is unfair. Having seen the queue today for the Millenium Wheel, and the short fast track queue I came to the opinion it should be scraped.

I totally see why the disabled should be merged in at the front of a queue. And that should remain. But if I'm going to have to wind my way around the barriers for an hour or more, so should everyone else. Just because the richer amongst us can "pay" their way to the front shows this to be a discrimatory way to allow people onto a ride.... Read more

Very soon after buying my 05 Focus 1.6 Zetec Climate 2 years ago I experienced engine problems and was recovered by tow truck . The breakdown man told me that one of the spark plugs had blown out of the engine and wasxsplit in two. The dealer I had bought it from expressed surprise but after a check in his garage he replaced the full set of plugs which was apparently the only problem.he could find.
Six months ago on turning the ignition key I heard a bang coming from under the bonnet and lost everything.
On this occasion no.s 1&2 plugs had blown out and there was orange coloured water splashed under the bonnet.
This time the breakdown people took me at my request to their own garage where they removed the cylinder head rebored the plug seating, fitted new gaskets, bolts, cam belt and satisfactorily tested it. It cost me over £1,200 for the repairs.
I have now discovered the 05 model was the first of the new shape Focus and is fitted with a Mazda engine which does not have an engine cover, subsequently rain water gets through to the cylinder head and is a well known problem. The main Ford dealer for my area informs me Ford know of this defect but have done nothing about it.
Can anyone advise me of any practical way in which I can waterproof the top of the engine or indeed any precaution I can take to avoid this happening again. ?

Spyker, which was already a loss-making supercar manufacturer, bought Saab, which itself is now making bigger losses under Spyker ownership. What is the opposite of a win/win situation? Read more

Hmm. Don't remember Red Robbo as a Thatcherite. The demise of the British motor industry in the seventies was down to complacency and a superiority complex. The japanese did for us and the Americans. Nobody to blame but ourselves. The writing was on the wall when the Japanese made motorcycles that didn't break down and leak oil all over your garage floor. Sad but true.
