My Peugeot 406 has developed a fault with the air con. When switched on the air con runs cold but after about 30 seconds the 'stop' message on the control panel flashes and bleeps and the message on the display is 'engine overheating'. Engine temperature remains normal. My local garage checked out the diagnostics and nothing was shown or stored. Air con pump and other bits all checked out OK. Their advice was to run it anyway and ignore the message. I am not comfortable doing this. Any ideas as to what is causing this and how to recify it.

I also have a fault with the hand brake in warm weather which has been going on since last year. When the hand brake is pulled up the display flashes 'brake fluid level low' even 'tho I know it is fine. ... Read more

I am looking for a nearly-new Mercedes 220 CDI Blue efficiency SE 6-speed manual estate.

Can anyyone please advise me whether the claimed mpg figures for this car are anywhere near reality? ... Read more

Azinbear, I considered a C220 auto. The spirit monitor website (google it) gives real-world mpg - experienced by a large number of owners - of the auto as 35.3 average. The official combined is 47.1 mpg.

My experience of this website is that it is very accurate in that the average figures it quotes are in line with figures I have got from a number of cars I have run. I record brim to brim figures of my cars.

Hi

Am just about to take delivery of a nearly new citroen C3 Airdream+ with the 1.6HDI engine and was wondering if the advice given by HJ on the 31st Mar 2002 still relevant today as regards running in a new diesel engine.... Read more

It's important to give it some work to do in the first hour or so of operation -- that doesn't mean thrashing it, but just give it maybe half throttle to accelerate briskly from 2,000rpm up to about 3,000rpm in 3rd gear and 4th gear a couple of times on the drive home if you can find a nice open road or dual carriageway.

This helps develop the piston rings' seal in the cylinder bores. If the engine is babied too much, the bore surface can 'glaze' and the piston rings will not seal properly, meaning the engine will burn oil and will not deliver optimum performance....

If he is a dealer and registered as such then regardless of whether he trades from home or from Buckingham palace then you are cover by the sale of goods act and it gives you a lot more protection than buying privately if it all goes wrong.

Have recently discovered after washing my car a few times that the passenger side front door has had a bad spray job done on the upper half at some stage b4 i bought it. I think the garage i bought it from had polished it up but now after some washing it has a dull sheen compared to the rest of the car. On closer inspection it has a few little drips and has definately been touched up by an amateur at some point however they have at least used the correct paint.

Would like to know of any suggestions for fixing this so as it looks more similar to the rest of the car. I don't mind about the drips as the finish is not noticable except on very close inspection, it is just the dull non metallic look compared to the panels around it that i don't like. Is the top half of the door only above black plastic strip. Ford focus 2006 in metallic Black.... Read more

Any sprayer won't be keen on just doing the door-to get a proper colour match,it is preferable to respray the whole side of the car.

2001 reg, car has done 68K miles, I have had it for 6 years with no problems.

I have just had the same thing with my 04 318SE.

The oil light came on Thursday night so put half a litre of oil in and since have been having problems. Initially when I pressed the clutch, the rev counter would drop and the engine would stall. Now, when idle, the engine ticks over at 600-700 revs, then gradually increases to about 1700 before dropping again....

Sorry for the delay in dealing with any queries for the last week.

I have moved both home and office and was supposed to unplug in the old places early last Friday morning and plug into the new ones last Friday lunchtime after a pleasant drive down the M4.

Unfortunately British Telecom seemed to have other ideas and we only got a land line in this morning - one week after it was due. Furthermore there is no mobile signal within 2 miles of the house.

But we now have landlines, broadband and working satellite reception so I should be back up to speed in dealing with everything. I will be catching up throughout today and over the weekend but if there is anything urgent please call me on 0117 383 0221. Read more

Spoke to soon. So far we have had three delivery dates - the first for the day when we moved - so that one went sailing by. Then for a week later. Then (lastly) for five days later which was yesterday.

In that time I have had three different telephone numbers and the broadband has worked firstly for 18 hours - whereupon they cut it to "facilitate the second delivery date", then for 24 hours, when they cut it to "faciilitate the third delivery date - which was yesterday....

Likely a slightly rough release bearing, if it drives OK I wouldn't worry about it, it will cost you a lot of money to find out.
