Hello - this problem concerns a Ford 1.8 diesel turbo-intercooled engine, but whilst I'm posting under the Escort heading, it's actually fitted as OEM equipment to an agricultural vehicle; however as far as I can tell the installation closely matches a typical car job ( the only difference is that there is no ECU).

The problem is starting - from cold the engine fires up well, and for 5 to 10 seconds runs and revs up okay to my ears, but then starts to run very irregularly and soon stops. It then doesn't start , or runs very badly, until it has been left for a while, and then it runs and stops as before; this suggests fuel starvation ( of course ?) but I can't find any blockages. Most of the pipework is new, the tank has been cleaned, a new filter fitted and its holder cleaned; the only thing I can think is whether there is a small filter in the Lucas injector pump ( type F18.1TC1.10 ) body that is cunningly hidden from casual view.... Yes, I tried that, with no luck - there was no vacuum when I removed it, and testing the return fuel pipe showed there was air escaping.

It probably is the pump at fault, and it will proably need cleaning. Thanks for your suggestion....

Hi,

Does anyone know if the aircon has a failsafe system that stops it operating if all the gas has escaped preventing it from damage? If it has then this could be why the fan doesn't come on and has nothing to do with the leak.

I'm now thinking that the coolant leak occurs all the time but is very small and that, when I stop, the coolant that has sprayed all over the engine drains onto the floor and gives the impression that it only occurs at the end of a journey.

Anyone any ideas?

I sell cars on the internet and relly on superior photographs to draw attention to my adverts, I've been using a Fuji Finepix A605 which is probably about 6 years old and it's been taking crystal clear pictures filled with vibrant colour. Yesterday it finally packed up so I bought a Fuji Finepix J28 and it's nowhere near as good as the old one, the pictures are dull and slightly blurred, and are curved as though they're being viewed on a bubble. What setting do I need to be on to get the results I need? I'm on 03M quality as they have to be of e-mailable size, I can't use a flash as I get too much glare back from number plates and reflectors. Thanks, John. Read more

If you do import pictures from your camera with the highest resolution settings, you can compress them using the Image Resizer PowerToy from Microsoft. Download the PowerToy from Microsoft's website - it's a really simple tool. Once you've installed it onto your computer, right click on the thumbnail of the image you'd like to compress in Windows Explorer and select Resize Pictures. You can adjust the amount of compression to suit your needs.

Just bought this car from the in-laws as its very low mileage and regulary service etc. Just had some torrential rain yesterday and water is coming into the cabin from the headlining around the map lights/sunroof controls. It also seems to be coing in somewhere near the back of the drivers head.

We used to have a Mondeo Mk1 estate that leaked from a break in the rear screen washer line as it passed over the lining. The kids thought it was a hoot when they got showered in the back seat! This happened in my mate's Mondeo estate as well; he didn't see the funny side of it and hasn't driven a Ford since.

Hi folks, just sold a car on ebay for £1750. Had the usual suspects messaging me saying "cancel the auction now and I'll give you cash" and words to that effect. The auction description said in no uncertain terms "PAYPAL ONLY" and people with no paypal account were unable to bid. The winner now says he won't use paypal as he has "been scammed" before. I think he wants to turn up with cash, find fault with the car and offer less. Am I paranoid? My instinct is to refuse and re-list. Ta. Read more

thanks chaps my misgivings were unfounded. I took the cash and there were no problems. Having read your advice over paypal I wouldn't attempt to use it for payment on a car.

Hi all, I'm looking to fit winter tyres to my Z4 this year, I've settled on the Vredestein Wintrac Xtremes but can't decide between the two speed ratings. The car normally wears V rated tyres, but I can get the winter tyres in H rating for less money and I have a feeling that the compound may be softer and grippier.

Can anyone confirm one way or the other which one would be better? My insurers state that I can fit whichever ones I want.... Read more

As in the letter to the Daily Telegraph Sat past re insuring a car for a son who NEEDS a car

HJ said it would be OK for the parents to insure in their name with the son as a named driver... Read more

Collos25

HJ is correct but not all insurance companies will see it that way,a young person making a claim on a car at or around a Unversity town they attend or on the route to a place of work then the insurance company starts to smell a rat and may ask a client to prove they are the main driver something that is not as easy as one thinks. So I would say both points of view have pluses and minuses.

The car does not have to insured by the owner it has to be insured by the registered keeper a big difference .

I have been advised by the MOT tester that both my daughters rear brake hoses are perishing on her 1990 1.6 auto. I thought I would do this myself as have replaced many hoses in past on front brakes, but the access to these ones seems impossible because of the rear torque tube type suspension. The pipe to flex connection is right above the torque tube so I could just about get a brake nut spanner on the pipe nut but there was no way I could turn it. Even if I got it off I could not see me getting it refitted at all.

Is there some trick to improving access - if I jack the body up without the wheels? all help appreciated

Axle stands get the car up high enough and slide under & on a 20yr old car might be seized so mole grips to remove and you may need to replace the brake pipe so be ready for this.

One of the screen wash jets on my Cleo is blocked and despite numerous attempts to unblock it remains stubbornly unresponsive. I've checked all of the water pipes connected to the jet and they are OK. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to remove the jet nozzle with a view to possibly replacing it. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Read more
