I can't think of a German group car that I've been in which hasn't had hard seats. My father in law had a Golf and we also hired one to do a long journey in once and they both had hard seats. We went for a test drive in a Skoda Octavia 4x4 and after half an hour we couldn't wait to get back in our Freelander.

We changed my wife's car recently for a new Skoda Fabia and as that is only used for the daily 15 mile each way commute it's not too bad. We used it to go to the airport when we were going away this year and that was 150 miles, after 50 miles it was uncomfortable.

For long journeys and the winter we use my car, Honda CR-V, and that is still comfortable after a 400 mile plus drive as were the two Freelanders we had prior to that. We have rented SUVs in the US and they have seats like armchairs, really comfortable. They still had plenty of lumbar support so no back problems.

I have also seen on other forums complaints about BMW seats being hard. So are all German car seats hard and if so why?

When i bought my first Golf in 1994 the salesman told me the reason for the "firm" seats was to prevent "submarining" (i think) to stop you sliding below the lap belt in the event of an accident.

Hi there

I don't thing the Astra is a bad choice at all. I've driven scores of these vehicles as hire cars through work and I quite like them. They are a comfortable, refined and straightforward proposition. Only drawbacks I can think of are fiddly buttons for the heater and stereo and a lack of storage space for bits and bobs. And the bizarre indicator stalks, but I would compromise that. Go for at least Club spec to ensure full set of airbags and air con....

I have just bought a Mercedes B Class 180CDi SE, 18K miles and 15 months old. The purchase was from a main Mercedes dealer and it is in superb condition.

During the negotiations, I asked to see the V5 to verify who the one previous owner was and was told the document was at their head office and they did not have a copy to hand. I was lead to believe that the car was probably bought in from Mercedes Head Office on their closed auction system.... Read more

I've had an ex-rental before and it was fine - but it was a Ford through the Ford Direct programme (at the time, a better warranty than new).

I wouldn't want to pay MB dealer prices and be driving around in an ex-rental. You may as well have gone to a car supermarket and bought the same car for much less....

Haven't been here for a loooong time, but thought I'd warn others to be a little more careful and go to court if anything like this happens to them re speeding.

My car was caught by a hand held camera (hidden totally from the road I might add as he was filming cars from the rear and was behind a wall out of sight in a side road). ... Read more

It is infuriating to read of cases like this and really offends my sense of justice. Someone was speeding and it was *probably* the named driver, here's some circumstantial evidence, so admit to it or we'll have you. Dither the slightest and it's "do not pass go" and a three figure fine. If only muggers and shoplifters could get caught so easily, eh?

I'm thinking Vauxhall, Hyundai and Kia particularly here. Are these warranties giving owners additional protection at no extra cost or is the reality that the conditions, cost and scope of the relevant servicing regimes have been altered accordingly. So, for example, have major/important parts which are now more likely to fail under the extended warranty have been brought into the scope of the servicing regime so they are routinely replaced at the owner's expense before any failures are likely to occur and sooner than otherwise would have been the case?

You mean you smell a rat?You could be right or are we to cynical, these warranties have to be paid for either the servicing whith the dealer you bought the car from at inflated prices.I dont know lets hope we are wrong.:)
