I've noticed that many dealers are offering very long warranties. Some are 5 years, one is 7 years, and one is now doing a 100,000 mile lifetime warranty.
A lot of people sell their cars after just a few years because they think it's going to start costing lots of money. I wonder whether these warranties will make any of these people keep their cars for longer? Replacing a 3 year old car seems like a big waste if it has another 2+ years warranty. I suspect these people will still continue to replace their cars every few years though. Read more

Problem solved!
Disconnected the car battery. Put ignition key in and turned it to position 2. Reconnected the battery.
All systems working as normal.
I saw this comment on a forum earlier
"Yeah, everyone who drives a car probably trusts their own ability more than that of a coach driver."
Someone also told me that because I drive coaches, that I am banned from the outside lane IN MY OWN CAR and restricted to the same speed as the coach because I would not be competent at typical third lane motorway speeds in my own car. Is this true? Read more
As a long time heavy goods driver I have to say that coach drivers have my admiration too.
I know a coach drivers 'load' will walk on and off and not need a fork lift or strapping down, but it continually moves about during the journey and makes a noise....
Hi All
I am thinking of buying a used nissan micra. I know that this car was very popular among motoring schools. Obviously i do not want one with such a past history. Does the V5C say whether the car has been used as such.... Read more
A patch on the roof where the plastic film was fitted to allow the roof sign to be taken on and off safely is the only other give away I can think of.
When I sold my SOM car (a Focus) the holes for the dual pedals had been filled and the carpet repaired very effectively, but a careful inspection would definitely have given the game away....
We go back and forwards to France quite a lot. Usually once a month for a few days. We take stuff there and back and can usually fill a good size estate car. We have a SAAB 95 2.2tid at the moment which serves quite well, and it has a proper spare wheel to avoid silly happenings with the space-saver on the wrong side of the Channel. It will eventually give out, due to starship mileage.
What would be a good replacement ? I don't want to spend more than £10K (I'm like that) and would ideally like something that can be fairly easily fixed when something goes wrong i.e. not too many electronics. And I would rather stick with a car that doesn't have a cam-belt. Any ideas ?... Read more
I'd hesitate to recommend another Saab given what GM seem to have done to their quality control - or a Peugeot, where quality control was never a priority.
I had a 93 Vector diesel from new, it was an okayish car but had quite a few quality issues and a lot of niggling faults so I didn't keep it long.
I have a Vauxhall Astra 52 plate (2003 reg) 1.7 dti with an isuzu engine which wont start.
i have checked all the glow plugs (which are all working)... Read more
The glow plugs are earthed by the engine and only require a 12v supply. Have you checked to see if they are actually getting 12v when the ingnition switch is in the appropriate position? How did you check them?
A couple of times recently the radio and the courtesy light have come on while I have been in the car with doors shut, ignition off and radio off.
Any idea of the cause? I have only 3 months months warranty left, should I be worried?... Read more
Take it to the Skoda garage and ask them to fix it.

Hi everyone,
I hope you can help me. Whether or not you are aware of my engne run-away which has a big post on this forum i just wanted to know how Mazda/Vosa work out the chassis numbers to be recalled? I've got a 2008 (58 plate) 6 SL 2.0Tdi... Read more
First post for me although have been an avid reader for many years.
I live in Spain and the time is coming to change the old Xsara Picasso 2.0HDi, probably for a C3 Picasso 110HDi. I like the way a diesel engine drives and diesel is cheaper here in Spain than in U.K. The question is does the warmer climate have any affect on the regeneration cycle of the almost inevitable DPF/FAP ? The engine reaches operating temperature very quickly, so for most of the year (it can be very cold in winter here, even on the mediterranean coast) the exhaust will be operating at a much higher temperature than in U.K. I do reasonable length runs and because of the relatively low traffic density it is easy to maintain speeds of 90/100kph on "A" roads and the occasional "Italian tune-up" doesn´t seem to generate much black stuff from the exhaust. The alternative seems to be to go for a lower powered version which currently does not have the dreaded filter fitted. I realise that this could a "how long is a piece of string" type question but any relevant advice will be much appreciated.... Read more
The higher air temperature will help slightly but not a lot.
The exhaust is running at 3/4/500 degrees C or more so +20C won't make a lot of difference....
Hi first time poster.
I am looking for a turbo diesel for the above price range looking for suggestions.... Read more
LPG systems are expensive to fix. A mate bought a car last year with an old system. It took over £1000 to bring it up to date. Until it was fixed the car would only run on petrol.

And this is why the bigger manufacturers have been slow to react to the challenge of the Koreans over the last few years.
Very few buyers of "mainstream" cars keep them very long. Most sold are to fleets, or company car buyers. Such buyers don't care about warranties beyond three years. Ford et al reacted to Mitsubishi offering 3 years because few people only keep cars a year, so the two extra years counted for something....
