Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-15000 - Dazl1212

Hi first time poster.

I am looking for a turbo diesel for the above price range looking for suggestions.

Must be reliable.

Under insurance group 8

Around 50 mpg.

and no slower than 14 seconds to 60.

So far I can find

Astra DTI 2.0

Rover 25 D

Fiesta 1.8TD

Focus 1.8 TDi

Golf 1.9 TDI if im lucky.

Which would be best and does anyone have any other suggestions?

Please help!!

Thanks

For that sort of money it will either be old or well used, why a turbo diesel with all the expensive inherant faults that come with age you would be far better of in the long run buying a good petrol maybe c class , mondeo or vectra with plenty of cheap parts available or any car in your list only the petrol version thats been well looked after.

If you want diesel then I would suggest any car fitted with the VW Tdi unit.

You will get 90BHP upwards giving you the acceleration you require & easily achieve 50mpg if not used for too many short journeys.

Needs good service history to ensure the turbo & engine are in as good a condition as possible.

Don't worry about mileage if the SH is good.

I drive around 30 to 40 miles a day so I thing I would save a fair amount on fuel if I was to get a DTI Astra as opposed to a 1.4 16V Astra. although the 1.4 Astras are cheaper to buy and insure and tax. mmmmmmm

As always at this price range (and I presume you mean £1,000 - £1,500, not £15,000), condition is more important than make or model.

That said, there should be lots of Fords and Vauxhalls around so you'd have more choice. People say that you can still get parts for Rovers easily, but a friend was telling me only yesterday that he's getting rid of his much-loved 75 because of parts difficulties.

If your priorities are cheapness and economy, a non-turbo diesel may be sluggish, but there's one fewer part to go wrong.

Most people say the MK4 golf would be my best bet but this site says they are niot too great the focus engine i could afford also according to this site would not be the best. I have an mk3 Gold 1.9d it it is just too sluggish for me.

"Old tech" diesels which is what you'll be looking at with this price range are all pretty reliable, get the best looked after car you can regardless of make or model. Early VAG Skoda diesels are a good bet, you should get a better car for the money over a VW - rather than spending £1000 on a badge and £500 on the car you'll be buying £1500 worth of car.

Bare in mind any car in this price range may be no better than sc***, any car is only as good as how it's been looked after.

One of my brothers has a 2002 Renault Laguna 1.9TDCI going for £1,700, it's a six speed with half leather, taxed and MOT'd 'til march next year.

Such as 2000 plate skoda octavia TDI ON AUTOTRADER FOR £1095? TAXED AND MOT'D

Any 10-year-old car is a gamble, but it could be a good one. Personally at this price level I'd go for a petrol Focus - 1.8 or 2.0 if you want a bit more oomph.

Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-15000 - Dazl1212

Its the fuel economy that puts me off. I travel around 30-40 miles a day to work.

Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-15000 - Dazl1212

Given the milage would I really save that much money getting a TDI Golf as opposed to say a 1.4 Astra or Civic for example?

Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-15000 - Avant

Probably not, because you'd get an older Golf for your money which might need more repairs.

The Civic (petrol) 1.4 or 1.6 is a good bet - quite a lot have been driven by retired people and led a gentle life - although beware of ultra-low mileage as several years of short journeys to the shops / church / bingo do a car no good at all.

Wouldn't it be worth hanging on to the car you've got unless / until it becomes uneconomical to repair?

Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-15000 - Dazl1212

I would like to get something with a bit more zip and a bit more modern tbh. The golfs I have been looking at are mk4 but I do quite like the civic ls vtech and the corrola 2000 plate vvti 1.4

Surely with a budget limit of £15,000 a new diesel smaller car is perfectly feasible, try drive the deal? or sommat Ex Motorpoint, spoilt for choice.

I have ordered a new Octavia 1.6 diesel Elegance with DSG for just over £16,500 from a N I dealer, should be able to do better on the mainland I would have thought.

Or should that have been £1500.00??

Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-1500 - Dazl1212

Sorry yeah its £1500

Why do you keep bumping this thread? Avant has given you good advice. The secret to buying a cheap car isn't looking for the 'right' model and spec, it's buying what other people overlook. Since fuel economy is paramount in most people's minds, diesel's carry a big percentage premium ove their petrol counterparts.

It's about minimising your chances of picking up a lemon rather than tryng to get the best car. The sort of diesel Audi/Vdubs in the sub £1500 range are unlikely to provide cheap trouble free motoring. If you've only got £1500 to play with, what are you going to do if it transpires that the previous owner has offloaded you a car with a worn HP pump or injectors.

Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-1500 - 475TBJ

Assuming your journey of 40 miles is to and from work, over the course of a year that's about 10,000 miles.

55 mpg diesel car at £1.40/litre = £1145

40 mpg petrol car at £1.35/litre = £1512

A diesel therefore could save you £367 a year, but a even just turbo would be expensive to replace and would cost about as much as 2 years saved fuel cost over a petrol. Personally I'd go for something like a Corolla or a Focus with a petrol engine. Otherwise an Octavia in diesel form with my eyes open to the bits which could go wrong. You'll get a lower mileage petrol car for your ££ than a diesel. Lots of Focus on autotrader/freeads paper.

Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-1500 - corax

475TBJ - I couldn't have put it better myself. Of course some low mileage people still drive diesels because they like the driving characteristics, which is fine, but expect to budget for fuel pumps, injectors, turbos, DPF'S and DMF's at high mileage, or buy fairly new with a good warranty. You'd be lucky to pick a good diesel for £1000-1500, unless you can put up with a smoky old low tech engine with no guts.

Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-1500 - madf

Any discussion of motoring costs and saving money - and buying a different car - that concentrates on fuel consuption is fatally flawed.

RFL and Insurance are just as important and if the fuel difference is only £350 pa ish then the insurance costs alone for an Audi could eat that up.

A proper analysis requires some work - by the OP. If he can't or won't do it....then this thread is a waste of time..

Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-1500 - galileo

Usual to have more frequent oil/filter changes for a diesel, too, so add on a few quid for that.

Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-1500 - Dazl1212

Thanks for the advicee some nice LPG converted petrol cars on Autotrader may go that way tbh

Any - Turbo Diesel £1000-1500 - 475TBJ

LPG systems are expensive to fix. A mate bought a car last year with an old system. It took over £1000 to bring it up to date. Until it was fixed the car would only run on petrol.
