Julie Spence, outgoing Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire police, is quoted in the Daily Telegraph today as saying that "Speeding is middle-class... behaviour." I had not realised that there was a class dimension to speeding and I wonder how she established it. The term she uses is generally related to occupation. The middle classes are white collar workers, the working classes blue collar. This is not related to income and the ability to buy fast cars (though there can't me any current model that won't easily exceed 70 m.p.h.). I am a retired teacher, hence middle class. My son is a plumber, hence working class. He has earns more per month than I ever did and drives a Mtisubishi Evo while I have a Hyundai i30. Spence's comment could only make sense if she had established the "class" of speedsters in her patch. Otherwise, the faster she "outgoes" the better. Read more
My son was caught by a mobile camera over 4 weeks ago on the 18th July, and although he was sent a photograph to verify his identity within 4 days, he has still not received notification of any fine.
Could anybody with knowledge of this situation please advise if there is a finite time in which fines should be notified?... Read more
Thank you guys, (in particular DVD), for your detailed and informative replies, which are much appreciated.
The Grundig radio fitted to the Merc over 20 years ago is dying, and as I don't fancy spending the rest of the summer with a soldering iron and a box of capacitors I've decided it's time to replace with something more modern.
The trouble is that most aftermarket radios I've seen look dreadful. Tiny multi-function buttons, lurid displays that say "hello" in 37 languages, and "3D sonic loudness equalisation with active anti-distort mode PMPO enhancers" don't really cut the mustard now I'm not 9 years old any more.... This lot were shown in the August 2010 copy of Practical Classics as offering a "Autosound Radio/CD/MP3 Player but with the classic two knob look at £169. Having perused their website I think it's one of these: http://www.autosound.co.uk/acc/accessories.php?type=4&brd_id=10
I bought a 05 Meriva in March this year, low miles 30 thousand, good condition etc.
I was 3/4 hour into my journey to Heathrow on Saturday when the car seemed to have died on me, I coasted off the road, temp looked ok, well it was on the lower scale of cool/cold.... Read more

Two months ago my vehicle started behaving like it has run out of diesel. When you put your foot on the accelrator, the engine cut out. When released its ran again until you went over 2k revs. After two miles it finally cut out with a lot of blue smoke. The garage re-programmed the injectors. It ran for 4 weeks and did the same thing. The garage fitted and new diesel pump (£1700). After 4 weeks did the same thing. They now say it needs new injectors. I dont beleive it. Did I need a new pump and why does it run fine for 4 weeks. When it cuts out, if you wait 30 mins, it will start and run for a time. Urgent reply required before I spend more money on it. Read more
The problem here is finding someone who can really diagnose the problem 100% without the 'keep fitting new bits till it's ended' mentality.
If you happen to find thise elusive chap do let us know where to find him will you and we'll all be beating a path to his door....
My friend has a Jeep Cherokee (2004) with 110,000km on the clock. It has a problem where the engine management light has now come on, and when using the automatic gearbox, it has become very gutless and lacks power. When the gearbox is changed to manual mode, it performs reasonably. What might be causing this problem? Is this a serious problem. The car-by-car section of this site lacks the information I need.

I have a V6 Cougar and the heater is only blowing hot air, I assume the heater valve which controls the flow of water through the matrix has failed but does anyone know where it is? I've had a look down the back of the engine with a torch but I can't see it. Thanks in advance, John. Read more
Due to a few hefty garage bills I've decided to replace the front discs and pads on my c-max myself. I am quite mechanically able although I haven't done much work on anything newer than a 1990! I would be grateful if anyone has any advice on changing discs & pads on c-max / mk2 focus - such as do I need any specialist tools and are they pretty straightforward to do?
Thanks Read more
Sorry , its the discs which were £27
Can anyone tell me please how to protect a folder with a password, instead of protecting each file in the folder separately? Or tell me a website as useful as this one but specialisng in computers? Read more
May be worth asking the question on a more computer related forum though. Not many answer on here at the moment.
Can you kindly suggest one?
Poorly chosen words by CC Spence. Perhaps middle class now refers to the popular term: 'middle England'. I take this to mean those on middle incomes regardless of occupation, upbringing etc. But it seems strange to suggest that the middle classes are blighted by some way of thinking that everyone else is not. However, I can't help but be amused by the Mother from the converted barn over the road from me, who moans about 'speeders' through the village. Following her home through an adjacent village the other day- I'm at 30, she's off into the distance. Speed limits obviously only apply where she actually lives. I think this is the attitude that Ms. Spence refers to - it's everyone else doing something wrong, when frequently we are 'everyone else'.
