BMW 3 Series Compact E36 - BMW 316ti tick over question - Hallcross

2001 reg, car has done 68K miles, I have had it for 6 years with no problems.

Recently I added 1 litre of oil as the warning light came on, this was due to a cracked filler cap. I replaced the cap and added one litre of approved oil.

It may be coincidence but since then during tick over the engine revs will rise occasionally to almost 2000 revs before dropping back to normal?
Car passed MOT last week, so emissions etc OK.. Fuel consumption etc all good

I have just had the same thing with my 04 318SE.

The oil light came on Thursday night so put half a litre of oil in and since have been having problems. Initially when I pressed the clutch, the rev counter would drop and the engine would stall. Now, when idle, the engine ticks over at 600-700 revs, then gradually increases to about 1700 before dropping again.

Any ideas?
