Air conditioning works by compressing a refridgerant gas (R134a) which increases it's pressure and therefore temperature. This high pressure gas passes through a condenser where the gas condenses into a high pressure liquid. The liquid then goes to an expansion valve where it's pressure is substantially reduced and consequently so is it's temperature, and then on into the evaporator where outside heat is absorbed and the liquid evaporates back into a gas. The low pressure gas is then drawn back through a receiver dryer to the compressor where the whole process starts again.
It's a closed loop system and the amount of gas has to be correct for the system to function properly. Too much gas will mean the system will be just as ineffective as too little. In addition to the legalities, and since you have no way of knowing how much gas is in the system to start with you should take the previous poster's advice and take it to a professional with the right equipment.....
I have a Lexus GS300, 57 plate, 19,000 miles on the clock with the warranty ending soon and I'd like to know if anyone has an opinion as to whether or not the Main Lexus Dealer servicing is worth paying for or are there independents who have all the right equipment who would be cheaper. I live in the Stockport, Greater Manchester area and if anyone knows of a good independent garage that can service a Lexus properly I'd like to know.
Thank you. Read more
It's coming up to it's third birthday so warranty will soon be out, i'm in exactly the same position with my Hilux.
I will get Toyota to service and MOT it at the end of August for one good reason, they will look fairly on goodwill help for any failure in the next year.
If i get it serviced at joe bloggs and save meself 100 nicker i'll kick meself if a major item should go wrong after Christmas, hopefully remote chance but you just never know.
Another reason, Toyota's servicing dept do not rip me off, i'll decide again next year whether to carry on or get my indy to do the business but for this one i'll hedge the bets.
I purchased a Rover Streetwise diesel from -a car dealer- for £3100 without warranty, other than an agreed 3 months on mechanicals, which I believe to be the statutory minimum. I also took out a third party warranty with snip. On 16/12/09, the car would not accelerate and had to be taken to the local Rover service agent, who performed diagnostics. The end result was a bill for over £600 for mainly diagnostics, including also £200 for a replacement potentiometer. Warranty direct wouldn't cover it as they said it was less than the three months inital period and GPR said that electrics were not covered, just engine failure!
Have I got cause for a claim against either please?

There is no liability for the supplying garage to pay the Rover garage's bill if you went there without reference to them. You could ask them for a goodwill contribution but you instructed the work and there is no liability for them to pay - the procedure is you take the car back to them and ask them to fix the fault.
On the warranty issue it's an insurance policy and you need to read it thoroughly as to the exclusions. Ask for a note it writing as to why they are refusing to pay.
I need to replace the 2 front tyres on my Lexus GS300 after only 19,000 miles. Before I replace them I will get the tracking checked and realigned if necessary. I am surprised that they need replacing already. My question is: Should I replace with the same as is currently fitted i.e. Dunlop 225/50 R17 94W or is there another tyre which is suitable for the car and which might wear better? There's a very positive write up of the Goodyear Eagle F1 Aym here: www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyres_For/Lexus/GS300.htm
Tested Nokia Maps in a Nokia 5230 - on a trip to Koblenz in March. Found this to be fine and the widescreen Garmin bought a couple of years ago stayed in the glovebox. Just one blip as i used it in Koblenz on foot to find the shopping centre.
I know.. but if you`re hooked on the technology ;-)... Read more
Recently upgraded my 3410 (black and white screen approx year 2000 must be retro cool by now...hahaha also went on 2 london marathons with me)
to a ebayed nokia 5800 music express. its has ovi maps and you can download more maps for free from ovi suit. i've mounted mine using a "car vent mount" so the base ball cap brigade can't see it from 20ft away at the petrol stations..(which they can do with a screen mount)...
I`ve noticed a couple of times recently that after a fairly long run, water drips out onto the road below the radiator, presumably from the overflow pipe. Enough to form a small pool of water.
The radiator header/expansion tank is not overfilled and is near to but below the Max. mark. I have not had to top it up so It can`t be losing much water.... Read more
its probably (as mentioned above) condensation from the A/C
I went to my local Vauxhall Dealer as I was passing to enquire about a service, and when I came back the Vectra had decided to dump A/C Condensation all over the car park (the one and only time its done this). i didnt know it at the time so I got one of the techs to come out - he gave it a quick check over, and sure enough thats what it was
I am thinking of looking for a 08 or 09 automatic c-max and was just wondering if there is anything in particular that I should be watching out for? as in faults, recalls ect.........
I'm in Ireland but I assume faults and recalls would be the same for the UK and Ireland.... Read more
Thanks for the replies, my hope is that because its been out for a long time that any glithches should be well ironed out at this stage.
Now to find one, the good autos seem very scarce.

I'll second ID. 1.6 is a much better car for eating the miles, and the economy is top, as ID states. And a hoot to drive.
For what its worth, who you're buying it from, and how well they look after it matters as much as age/miles. I'd jump at an older/higher mileage car if it had been owned by someone for years who had really looked after it. Can you trust the person is as much of a question as can you trust the car....
