I'm about to trade in my Mondeo, and want it looking as good as possible. There are two problem areas and I'm looking for low cost solutions.
Paint on the alloys has flaked off in places and I'm wondering if there's a cheap/easy way to respray or recondition them - or am I better off losing a few quid off the part ex?... Read more
Did a fluid change on the auto box but it's so difficult getting the level right.
The dipstick has a cold min and max mark and a hot min and max mark. I am checking the oil exactly according to the Haynes manual: making sure the oil is hot by driving for a few miles, then with the engine running going through the gears, then removing and wiping the dipstick, then reinserting and checking that the level is between the min and max on hot. Haynes says the oil can be checked when cold and it should be between min and max cold but to always recheck once hot, the cold marks are 'for reference only' whatever that means?... Read more
About twenty years ago there used to be signs for a measured mile (and half mile) on a dual carriageway between Keighly and Shipley. Is this still there and are there any more around the country? Read more
Thanks for the replies. I used to find it handy to time myself at a steady 60 (indicated) to check the accuracy of speedo. Wish they were more dotted around the country
I have a fluid leak under the dash on the passenger side in the footwell it is thicker than water clear and odourless no warning lights are showing or tanks dont seem low on fluid seems to be coming from something coming through the bulkhead from the engine compartment anyone got any clues as to what it could be and what harm could it be doing.

The Crusie control in my 406 executive works most of the time, however sometimes it does not work and then when i have stopped the car and got back into it does, what is the cause of this problem, and should there be a light on the instrument cluster to tell me the crusie control is activated Read more
I have a 2002 peugeot 406 executive, the airbag warning light comes on when the car is started, not all the time but most of the times, and it displays airbag fault on the middle display where the radio is found, and then that message goes away what bothers me is the light on the instrument cluster which wont go away. Is there some way of stopping this airbag fault, the indicator stalks in my car are brand new so that is not the cause of the problem, and i have heard about a wire under the seat but my car has electrically moving and heated seats so there is quite a collection of wires. Exactly what is it that should be done. Read more
This is a well documented fault which I have advised a fix for on here before. Its the plugs underneath the seats. For some reason they make a bad contact and then tells the system there is a fault. It's usually common on cars where the seats are regularly moved forwards and backwards by the occupants. The official Peugeot fix is to remove the plugs from the harness and reconnect the wires (colour to colour i.e. blue to blue etc - colour given for example only). This will then remove the faulty part. I did this fix on both my last 406 and my current one. It works fine.

Have had my 'v'reg zafira for 1 yr- just failed MOT on CO2 emissions- since getting the car have had to top up with oil every 600miles- was told this was ' a common fault' - now it seems to be a problem- garage have put some fluid in to flush the oil/engine and is in for a re-test on tues- he said next step would be either new pistons( which would mean splitting the engine etc - costing around £600 or a new /recon engine - again costing around £700 ) any advice would be greatly appreciated as feel utterly deflated with this news !thanks Read more
93000, 1.6v, Petrol, 1l every 600miles and I wasn't given the emission readings- I was told that they were too high and weren't registering on the reader- The garage then said to try a flush - he has put this in and I am to go back on Tues to re-test the emissions ( am I able to drive ( more than 10miles) with this fluid in ? ) thanks
Hi all, I have a Voyager V6 1998. Eversince I bought the car, we have had a misfire. The codes are P0350 and P0351 and at times P0352. We have changed the plugs, leads and coil pack. The misfire was intermittent. It nows seems to be everytime we start from cold, although if we go on a longer journey of 1 hour or more, stop the car and leave it for an hour or so then start and drive after a while it will clear and run as normal. The fuel consumption with the misfire is half of when running normally. The garage have no idea, but one theory that I have is that the ecu (powertrain) and the ecu for the transmission, both sets of wires areopen to water/moisture. Just for info, the pther day in the warm sunshine the car started with the misfire from cold but very quickly cleared.
Sorry for long post, but I am desperate to get it sorted or the car will have to go.... Read more
A gardener came up with this curious name for a kind of moss with green leaves, whereas a nurseyman, presented with a specimen, had no idea what it is. It grows up walls but likes hard paths best where it becomes a kind of thick, green coconut matting which is easily to remove in square foot lots. But it is invading my lawn and beds and none of the considerable array of killers from my local garden centre witl kill it, althopugh systemic killers knock it back for a while (obviously not a solutuon on the lawn). Has anyone got any ideas please? Read more
It looks like it, except I have never seen it flower. I will watch it this summer. Many thanks for the lead.
Sorry to post such a blunt request for help, but I need to expand my knowledge about cars as I need to find a new car for my family.
I need it to be economical, smaller engines are better, diesel pref, I don't race about, I'm an annoying person who drives at about 60 on motorways as they are too hectic with a car full of children.... Read more
Thanks for the suggestions. Yes I realise I'm probably going to have to let go of the "being up high" feeling. I don't want to be as low as I feel in my friend's Peugeot 406 though, that does feel extraordinarily low.
I'll check those suggestions out, thanks.

For the watermarks I'd go over seats with something like Groom from Halfords making sure you dampen the seat panel right out to a seam. http://tinyurl.com/yduqtbw
For the alloys see http://www.astraownersclub.com/vb/showthread.php?t=96753 scroll down to "in the wheel arches" section then "refurb painted alloys"....
