Hi - I've a 1998 Escort 1600 Zytec that has started to run erratic. The problem started about 6 months ago. After about an hour of driving the car appeared to lose power (like it was on 3 cylinders) as soon as you put the accelerator to the floor it cleared and was OK. This got quite frequent and I realised that if I switched off the ignition and then switched it back on it cured it. I called in to a Ford agent in Matlock to get a part for my wife's Focus and mentioned this problem to the parts guy. He said it was a common fault and sold me a sensor which was fitted next to the water temperature sender. This didn't cure the problem. Before I forget, the temp gauge rarely reaches 1/4 way up the gauge except in town. The problem has now developed further and, now and again, the revs stay up (about 2-3000 rpm) when I change gear. Also when I start it up from cold the revs rise and then fall without touching the throttle. Mechanically, the car is in very good condition and goes like a 1600 should. It doesn't use oil or water. This is an old car and I don't want throw money at it on a 'suck it and see' basis. Has anybody had the same experience and could please point me in the right direction for curing this problem? I had a water leak at the front of my car, I asked a garage to have a look. They said it was the radiator, so they they replaced it. The car still has a leak, should I still have to pay for them to fix the leak ? Read more

The two alternators are completely different. They won't interchange.

If this abomination from Geely becomes a reality it will probably hand the London taxi market to any rival manufacturer on a plate! www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/geely-reveals-new-london-taxi/248783/pictures/geely-reveals-new-london-taxi.aspx

The interior looks good though. Geely are taking over manufacture of the current London taxi design from Manganese Bronze, so it seems this chubby thing is possibly the planned replacement for the TX1. Read more

As the MINI and those PT C's are based on 50s looks then I suppose that figures!

I stand by what I said before, though, as a taxi cab design its useless!

Well, I'm in the mood for a 5pm G&T after my 11 year old BMW E36 Convertible sailed through its MOT test this afternoon. 88000 miles etc.

Enough gloating, but on speaking with the mechanic I was surprised to see an 05 Megane sitting in a corner requiring many £££ to pass:... Read more

Had an E36 BMW 316i(1991 model) from 1994-2009. Final mileage was around 180000 miles when we got rid of it. Had it from 3 years old.Since I had it only 4 shock absorbers, front discs and exhaust was changed (once).

The rest was all original, NO other parts replaced except for oil, filters, plugs, pads, tyres etc....

3 months ago I exchanged my 11 year old high mileage Rover 75 for a 54 plate Ford Focus, which seems to be a good all-rounder with the exception of its very hard ride and the thought of a 300 mile trip down the motorway is very off-putting. Despite the loss I would be facing,, I am thinking of changing again for a comfier car. What 1.6 auto would readers recommend in,say, the £4/5000 range ?

We haven't heard from Yanto since his first and only post five years ago. So I doubt he'll get the benefit of this new wisdom.

Guys, thinking about getting one of either of these, which should be the best long termer.

I would be looking at the 90 bhp focus, or the 105 bhp octy, thereby hopefully minimising the chance of a BIG bill.... Read more

Fear of a big bill for a diesel car is the main reason that I havent yet bought one! Did also look at hyundai I10 and panda earlier this year, but just dont think I could live with something that small!

Since some weeks ago, my Berlingo has developed this problem. The gear lever has excessive horizontal travel and although gears go in without a problem, it is sometimes difficult to find the exact gear position. An example going up a hill and I need to drop a gear say from 3rd to the 2nd gear, Accidentally the 4th will go in causing the car to lose all power.

Anyone came across this problem?? I have already replaced the gear lever assembly but the fault remained the same.... Read more
