Otherwise known as the Continental cruiser, or Ben Hur`s chariot - the latter certainly seeming it on local streets where you get the same lightness of control and leaping from bump to bump on our local potholed `roads`.

Mrs O calls it the `breadbin` perhaps on account of it being white and having a bit of old crust in the driving seat - or maybe a half baked fruitcake tucked in the corner. It didn`t help that leaves and twigs were produced from behind her seat on one of her internal clean-ups. Yeah, who cares about the inside?... Read more

Thanks Dave, I`d never seen that.

I found it interesting that Fiat specify a 5w40 synthetic oil and 12,000 service intervals - and Vauxhall 5w30 with 20,000. Is that right for VX?...

Hi all,

Really hope someone can help. My engine recently went bang after a water pump failure. My mechanic advised it would be better to get a replacement engine so I duly went round the motor spares suppliers in England and found what I thought was a suitable replacement. The company checked my chassis number and engine number and told me the one they were supplying was the right one. Anyway it duly arrived but:... Read more

Hello,

I have a 2005 MK2 2005 Focus Zetec that has developed a up/down engine note when under load. Its hard to explain, but instead of a constant engine note it seems to ramp up & down.... Read more

I think Peter D is probably right, the variation in noise is probably due to the noise from the bearing being at a similar frequency to that of the engine but not exactly the same, what you are hearing is the beat of the two frequencies as they go in and out of phase.

For eighteen months now I have been plagued with the engine warning light coming on. I have had the EGR valve replaced 3 times in 4000 miles and had numerous attempts by the dealer to find the problem. Now the dealer says that there is no vacuum at the EGR valve and they cannot trace where the problem is and have given up on it. So I am at the stage where I take the chance and run the car with the light on or sc***e it. Mazda Customer Service (when they eventually answered the phone) were dismissive and unsympathetic saying the car is outside it;s warranty and so they don't want to know

It has always been serviced by Mazda, is a 05 with 70000 on the clock. It has had the cam belt replaced at the last service.... Read more

HI, I have a 2003 Peugoet Partner 2.0 HDI with a damaged gearbox.

At the weekend it slipped out of 5th gear whilst I was doing about 80mph - there was a sickening crunch and the smell of burning metal.... Read more

Well you do sniff at some motoring things, don`t you? ;-)

Duckhams Q20/50 stood out as really different to other motor oils at the time I had a Mini van in 68. Not just in it`s green colour but it also smelt great. Wonder why? - I certainly don`t notice anything attractive about the smell of Mobil 1 currently.... Read more

Don't take this the wrong way but why do motorcyclists nowadays insist on filtering through lanes of traffic - cars/lorries at speeds above the national limit? I refer in particular to the stretch of the A14 between Bury St Edmunds and Cambridge that I travel to work along and back most weekdays.

As a retired motorcyclist (temporary)I I couldn't do it. I don't have the nerve and isn't it just a wee bit dangerous? I am aware that filtering between lanes of stationary or slow moving traffic is acceptable- legal even. I'm just worried one day i'm going to witness something horrific on my way to or from work on what is one of East Anglia's worst roads that has a black history of serious accidents due in no small part to a combination of sheer volume, speed and inattention.... I rode bikes for many years and have driven cars for over 40 averaging 20000 miles a year. As an ex biker I really do use all 3 mirrors and am very aware of road conditions, defects and the failings of many distracted motorists. Crass stupidity exists on both sides.

The French example is interesting, I have lived and travelled extensively over there and there is a polite co-existance (incredible but true given historic aggression on the French roads ). Make room for the biker and he/she will generally acknowledge you by sticking a foot out in thanks and if you are aware they are coming through, so be it....

I have found a 1972 Mercedes 600 Pullman on the west coast of France. I have spent a few days with my mechanic going through the car with a fine toothcomb. I really would like to buy it (it's a private sale, no dealer involved). But, I'm completely stumped as to how to register the car in my name in France on temporary plates in order to bring it back to the UK.

I would be ever so grateful for any advice whatsoever on how to handle the French end of things.... Read more

It was meant to be a slight metal Scraping sound.

Looks like someone has added the word "c r a p" to the swear filter again since I was a moderator on here. It used to be in there before, but we found it interfered with words like scrap, scrape, scrappage, etc, so we took it back out again....

You can choose your own combination of course - if you are detemined enough - although most newer cars have the red stuff as antifreeze so you can only have red&blue - or red&red....

Does red&red (or blue&blue) make you sweat though....... Read more
