I took the back seat belt off my 306 and it retracted. Now when try to pull it out again its stuck and the inertia reel activates. Is there any way of freeing it?

I'd add an Accord Tourer to your list. Well built and lovely to own. Normally reliable (although mine is an exception). Loads of room, and lots of features that make it easy to own.

Second the recommendation for the Octavia - I know someone that ran one for four years and 630,000 miles with no problems (taxi obviously). Mondeo is very very hard to ignore. All available with good diesel engines....

This may sound really stupid but I would like to hear from anybody with a premature clutch failure on Citroen/Peugeot, I am only interested in 2.0 HDI (138) on a six speed gearbox. My family owns four C5's and we have had to replace three of these due to weak diaphragm springs NOT due to wear. Please reply to clutchfailure@yahoo.co.uk Read more

"The Liberal Democrats have promised to reopen thousands of miles of railway track and stations across the country in what they said would be the biggest expansion of the network since the Victorian era.

The work would be paid for with nearly £3 billion switched from road to rail, party transport spokesman Norman Baker said."

Looking at the bigger historical picture here, there is a line of evolution in transport, which takes us from roads to canals, then railways and finally back to roads. The line seems to be swinging every so gently back in the direction of rail. All too little too late, I fear, as so many rail lines have been dug up, built over and converted into nature walks and cycle tracks and the like. The Great Central line, especially the stretch from Nottingham to London, had barely a handful of level crossings and the capacity to take long, large heavy trains from the continent which would eventually have come through the (as yet unbuilt!) Channel Tunnel right to the north of England with hardly an incline or bend to negotiate. Britian could have had a rail freight network as efficient and popular as Switzerland's, if it hadn't been for Beeching, unions, strikes, governments,... If only, if only...

Hi guys, had Oil Pressure Low and STOP warning lights come on at week end. Stopped at nearest garage to check oil levels. Oil was low, more worringly was the oily water leaking out the water/antifreeze header tank. It was quite a thick consistency and very black. Car was still cold so i undid the header tank cap, the oily water poured out under pressure. The car was running fine and no strange noises. Also wasn't overheating. I took it easy back home and car now sat on drive. any suggestions??? Read more

A friend of mine pumps water out of a rain water butt when washing his car, he reckons it gives a lovely streak free finish and has the added bonus of not going through his meter.

Living in an area where the roads are pretty bumpy at the best of times, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that a recent encounter with a pothole has damaged a tyre, but it was a very nasty bang, and I was quite surprised that there was no wheel damage. The tyre has stayed inflated, but has a pronounced bump where the sidewall meets the tread and will need replacing PDQ.

Is it worth taking up with the local highways dept? I know they've got their hands full with the frost damage, but I'm sure Nordic countries don't suffer this sort of disintegration every winter. Has anyone here successfully made a similar claim, or is it not worth bothering with? I imagine that proving cause and effect could be difficult, even though it seems obvious to me! Read more

Only fit Ford plugs. The main dealers sell tubes of what I think is silicone grease . This needs to be wiped around the plug (on every part that sticks out of the head) . I assume Ford stipulate the use of this product to prevent such problems as you are experiencing. Not sure if this relevant to your car but the washer jets have been known to leak water on the plugs.
