Mondeo w reg auto ghia x. Handbrake warning light on dash comes on sometimes when driving. When on I have noticed that the light on the TCS swich does not light up when pressed. When the handbrake warning light on the dash is off then the light on the TCS swich will come on when pressed. The TCS warning light on dash only lights when ignition is first switched on but at no other time. Read more

>>convert analouge signals from sensors to digital ones to enhance the accuracy

Sorry!, I have to take issue with that statement!

Digital signals for engine sensors can offer improved immunity from noise.

A conversion from analogue to digital cannot improve the accuracy of a measurement - owing to sampling delays and quantisation error, the conversion actually degrades the quality of the signal.

In most cases, the analogue signal is converted to digital at an early stage in the ECU - processors tend to deal exclusively in digital signals.

Mr Fox

A friend has just had her car damaged in a minor accident, where another driver ran into the back of her car, and pushed it into one in front, The other driver has admitted liability and a hire car has been provided whilst the situation is dealt with.

The problem is that her car is an S reg Rover 25, it had low mileage, full service history, was reliable and been owned by her from new, but even on a good day can't be worth much more than a few hundred pounds. The repairs have been costed at £ 1600

I fear that the insurance company will make a derisory offer of £ 100 - 200 for the car and she will be left without any transport or the means to buy a suitable replacement, ie not a complete heap.

Does anyone have any experience of this kind of situation and how best to proceed.

Thanks Read more

Foxy, check the engine in the GP on special offer - the 1.2 (8V?) I had as a hire car was slow as a mouthbreathing schoolleaver.
Not sure if this matters to your lady friend, but worth bearing in mind.

Ive mentioned on a previous thread that Ive been offered 4k off the price of any new Lexus (as I expect the whole customer base has)

I have found out today that Lexus GB are promoting this. How would this effect the dealers profit margin if Lexus are basically covering this discount.

Im currently talking to two dealers and need some urgent advice.(hence new thread)I need to know if I still have room to play with over a further discount on top of this 4K. I dont want a dealer trying to kid me on that the 4K is hitting them in the pocket when clearly its not, its hitting Lexus GB. Would it be unreasonable to ask for a further 2k off for example(surely the dealer has money to play with and if Lexus are covering the 4K they cannot lose can they!!)

I would negotiate further money off by asking over the book for my part ex (also Lexus)

I dont know how the trade works so if anyone has knowledge it would nice to go pre-armed.

many thanks Read more

4k off any new Lexus. The IS250 SR auto for example is 25,580 on the road so 4K off that.

Im not after a diesel but the basic 220d is £23192 OTR so would be 4k off that, so 19k. Im guessing there is still a couple of grand at stake in the big scheme of things?

Has anyone out there, excluding journalists, actually driven a TDCI Focus or C-Max with the Powershift dual-clutch gearbox?

I ask as there seems to be none to drive in my area, namely Surrey nr Guildford, not exactly a sparsely populated part of the country.

Farnborough Ford (a sizeable dealership) has none. Basingstoke, the same. Guildford Ford claims they're still waiting on delivery of a C-Max Titanium Powershift, which is a month overdue.

Production problems? Lack of demand? Or just slow-witted dealers? What's going on? Read more

Ford dealers are hopeless at providing demonstrators, at least for private customers. A C-Max 2.0 TDCI was on my shortlist last year, and I never got near one. One salesman seemed surprised that I didn't think that a 1.8 petrol was similar enough.

As long as Ford and their dealers can get their fleet sales, they couldn't give a stuff about losing a private buyer. In any case, given the amount of value Fords lose as soon as they leave the showroom, private buyers are best off buying them used.

Will be dusting off my Accord in a week or two when I arrive back from the UK. It's being (very!) gently driven to the local post office for tax and then straight to the local Honda dealer for a timing belt change, since it's now eight years old and almost certainly due one, especially after being left sitting in a barn for 4 months.

The spark plugs haven't been changed since new either - worth doing? I'll give it to the dealer to do since if they've been in the head for 8 years then they can have the fun of getting them out. ;-)

Brake pads will also need doing - anyone know if bog standard Honda pads are fine or whether it's worth speccing some different ones? Anything else you'd recommend besides oil?

Cheers,

Dave. Read more

My wife's car was written off a couple of month's back when a young girl in a Cleo ran into the back of her Polo. The Missus has suffered back injury as a result. The Police attended and took statements etc. and the insurance claim is still proceeding.

How can we find out if the other has been or is being prosecuted? I know it would make my wife feel a lot better. Read more

Vorny: I take your point, but doesn't 'accident' suggest an unavoidable situation? Surely the downright careless should have that carelessness examined, by the proper authority, a court? It's not punishment for the sake of it, but may remind the driver of their ongoing responsibility behind the wheel. Other road users deserve some protection from the downright careless, hence graded sanction, up to disqualification, and worse, in the most serious cases. A rising scale of offences and commensurate punishment recognises levels of irresponsibility from carelessness through to downright recklessness. A driving licence is a privilege, not a right, and carries responsibility. I try to act responsibly on the road, being aware of other people and the rules of the road. I welcome the sanction imposed by the courts, when appropriate; it offers me and my family some level of protection.

Reading a recent (now locked) thread, up popped the question of which is the correct way to position (a) the car and (b) the front wheels when parked behind a broken down vehicle.
It seems that the police tend to angle their car towards the lanes of traffic, with wheels pointing right to shield pedestrians from danger: if the police car is hit from behind, pedestrians are saved but the supposed lesser evil of a multiple pile-up may occur.
Rescue vehicles, however, generally turn wheels inwards, so that in any possible rear end shunt, all vehicles and their kinetic energy go into the crash barrier.
What should I do as a car driver? Votes now for wheels pointing IN / wheels pointing OUT ? Has any research actually been done on this? Is it a trend that will bounce to and fro over the next few years? I remember when a tyre fitter would always fit newer tyres to the front axle, but now it's the rear.

"*always* hazards on especially at night "
Thats okay unless it happens to be an alternator fault.

Also it would be difficult to position correctly without power steering. With no lights , position as far to the left as will allow, even onto the verge, get out and stand as far away as possible. Consider putting on reflective waistcoat as a further safety precaution.

I wasnt intending to buy new. I was looking for a 1 or 2 year old car so i dont take the full hit with depreciation.

However I got a letter from my Lexus dealer offering me £4000 off any new model. I took this to another Lexus dealer who also said, without hesitation, they would match it. The car im 'now' looking at is 25k new, so down to 21K. No finance involved.

Im struggling even to beat this price on the internet, they have also offered me a not too bad part ex (not far off book price). As this offer doesnt apply to part used cars on the forecourt they are almost twisting my arm to buy a new one rather than part used 12/18 mnths old for not alot less.

Does anyone else know if other manufacturers ie BMW are making such sweeping price cuts. Read more
