My wife's car was written off a couple of month's back when a young girl in a Cleo ran into the back of her Polo. The Missus has suffered back injury as a result. The Police attended and took statements etc. and the insurance claim is still proceeding.

How can we find out if the other has been or is being prosecuted? I know it would make my wife feel a lot better. Read more

Vorny: I take your point, but doesn't 'accident' suggest an unavoidable situation? Surely the downright careless should have that carelessness examined, by the proper authority, a court? It's not punishment for the sake of it, but may remind the driver of their ongoing responsibility behind the wheel. Other road users deserve some protection from the downright careless, hence graded sanction, up to disqualification, and worse, in the most serious cases. A rising scale of offences and commensurate punishment recognises levels of irresponsibility from carelessness through to downright recklessness. A driving licence is a privilege, not a right, and carries responsibility. I try to act responsibly on the road, being aware of other people and the rules of the road. I welcome the sanction imposed by the courts, when appropriate; it offers me and my family some level of protection.

Reading a recent (now locked) thread, up popped the question of which is the correct way to position (a) the car and (b) the front wheels when parked behind a broken down vehicle.
It seems that the police tend to angle their car towards the lanes of traffic, with wheels pointing right to shield pedestrians from danger: if the police car is hit from behind, pedestrians are saved but the supposed lesser evil of a multiple pile-up may occur.
Rescue vehicles, however, generally turn wheels inwards, so that in any possible rear end shunt, all vehicles and their kinetic energy go into the crash barrier.
What should I do as a car driver? Votes now for wheels pointing IN / wheels pointing OUT ? Has any research actually been done on this? Is it a trend that will bounce to and fro over the next few years? I remember when a tyre fitter would always fit newer tyres to the front axle, but now it's the rear.

Comprehensively described as used by emergency services and correct advice to "Joe Public".

"*always* hazards on especially at night "
Thats okay unless it happens to be an alternator fault.

Also it would be difficult to position correctly without power steering. With no lights , position as far to the left as will allow, even onto the verge, get out and stand as far away as possible. Consider putting on reflective waistcoat as a further safety precaution.

I wasnt intending to buy new. I was looking for a 1 or 2 year old car so i dont take the full hit with depreciation.

However I got a letter from my Lexus dealer offering me £4000 off any new model. I took this to another Lexus dealer who also said, without hesitation, they would match it. The car im 'now' looking at is 25k new, so down to 21K. No finance involved.

Im struggling even to beat this price on the internet, they have also offered me a not too bad part ex (not far off book price). As this offer doesnt apply to part used cars on the forecourt they are almost twisting my arm to buy a new one rather than part used 12/18 mnths old for not alot less.

Does anyone else know if other manufacturers ie BMW are making such sweeping price cuts. Read more

Thanks.

Yes, I have read in the toyotaownersclub forum numerous people complaining about their diesel MPG on the Avensis/Verso.

I have a banging noise coming from the rear of my 405.
It seems to be coming from the nearside rear wheel area.
It's a constant banging with no regular pattern.
It sounds like the exhaust is banging against something but i don't think it's that as i've pushed the exhaust in all directions really hard and i can't make it bang against anything.
Also i have bounced on the towbar and rocked the car and i can't make the noise happen but when i drive it the banging starts by just driving down the road, i don't even have to drive over a bump for it to bang.
Anyone got any ideas as it's driving me mad? Read more

Reading the thread below concerning plenty of like minded fools driving with little or no lights on in fog/rain etc. One poster got me thinking -- why exactly have car makers got rid of the dim-dip system that used to be so popular in the mid 80s and early 90s? Read more

It seems that Renault have launched a new Safrane! But in Middle East markets only? Don't suppose they'll bother with sales in Europe. What do you think of it:

Reminds me vaguely of the Nissan Altima...

Can't see them selling many in brand-conscious ME markets! Read more

I recently saw a new Nissan Maxima - a fantastic-looking car, almost up there with the Chrysler 300c - shame it'll never be coming to the UK.

Last night a scrote hit the rearmost of 3 parked cars (daughter's car was middle of three so damaged front and rear) and ran off after torching his untaxed, uninsured wreck as seems to be SOP in these cases.

My daughter will ring her insurer in the morning, questions are:

1) If she claims on her own fully comp policy, will the insurer need details of the innocent owner/car pushed into hers by the offender?

2) Will the insurer of the innocent owner/car hers was pushed into claim from her?
3) I presume her insurers will need a crime number from the BiB?
4) All cars were recovered to a Police compound by the Police recovery contractor - will they charge for this (West Yorkshire) and if so is this recoverable from her insurer?

Hi,
My 2001 Honda Accord V-tech 2.0i auto won't idle.
It runs OK above idle but I suspect it is still missing a little.
I have changed the coil, checked the sensors are adjusted to be as near to the shaft as possible.
Could I have a faulty ignition control module (the one inside the distributor)?
I ask because I don't want to spend £59 to change it if it is not at all likely to fix the idle problem. The engine light doesn't come on and there are no fault codes.
Thanks for any advise.

Guy got 10 years for death by dangerous after his stolen car flipped over the central reservation and hit and killed a driver coming the other way.

The prosecution played footage of the police chase in court.

I watched it with a few others and we all agreed, you couldn't fault the police on this occasion.

Decided to post this after seeing the locked thread about the grandmother.

I think I am right in saying that we should see the Sept car sales figures out sometime this week? With all the credit panic over banks failing and such it will be interesting to see what the sales figures are for cars during September.

>> BMW was 24.1% down for September

That's not as bad as I was led to believe, although it's worse than MB and a lot worse than Audi. BMW higher sales volume mean they were down by a chunky number of cars - a lot of value; approx 6000 cars at, say, £20K each is £120M. BMW's "efficient dynamics" is supposed to be a big advantage to them.

Honda's market share on the other hand was 3.77% v. 4.92% in Sept last year.
They registered 39.6% fewer cars.

I would image that's largely due to current Jazz being very much in its run out phase.
