Why no dim dip? - Cheeky
Reading the thread below concerning plenty of like minded fools driving with little or no lights on in fog/rain etc. One poster got me thinking -- why exactly have car makers got rid of the dim-dip system that used to be so popular in the mid 80s and early 90s?

Ah - the glories of Wikipedia -- just found an answer to my own question -- seems a ridiculous statement if you ask me...

"In 1988, the European Commission successfully prosecuted the UK government in the European Court of Justice, arguing that the UK requirement for dim-dip was illegal under EC directives prohibiting member states from enacting vehicle lighting requirements not contained in pan-European EC directives. As a result, the UK requirement for dim-dip was quashed. Nevertheless, dim-dip was (and is) still permitted, and while such systems are not presently as common as they once were, dim-dip functionality was fitted on many new cars well into the 1990s."

I suppose auto-lights are becoming more common on lower-end models too now, so even thick people can have their headlights on without having to remember about them.

Yes it does sort of make me worry about the potential for confering responsibility on to the car rather than its driver.

"Terribly sorry I crashed into you but the dim-dip, auto-on headlights must have failed, not my fault as such you see but sorry anyway"

"Quite understand old boy, had a similar problem last year when the auto-wipers didn't come on and the auto-brakes failed to operate at the same moment, went straight up the Harris Tweed of the car in front but like you it wasn't my fault......"

Thick people aren't restricted to lower end models :-)
