What I really want

A new Fiat Panda Diesel with a conventional automatic transmission, very low VED group, good MPG, able to do a few hundred motorways miles with no bother, able to convey tall passengers in comfort

What I don't want
A manual or CVT, Dualogic, MMT or similar unreliable transmissions

What's pretty close to what I want?
Perodua MYVI Automatic

What I need is...

A list of conventional autos in reverse VED/price order

Any ideas?

Hope I've put this in right place new to this
Bought an 07 Mondeo edge hatchback in Feb 08 (love mondeos) a few weeks after getting it a persistant rattle developed from the boot after many miles of sitting in the boot/ back seat (whilst partner drove) found that if I pushed up on boot lid behind nearside rear seat the rattle stopped so took car to dealer who sent a technician for a drive with me who confirmed that was the point of rattle they greased the damper mounts and sent me on my way, unfortunately the rattle remained so back it went after a short arguement about trim not being covered under warrenty if car a year old they agreed to change the damper this was done and within 5 miles of the dealer the rattle was back, after checking my gap insurance to confirm the write off value I stripped the line out of the boot most os the side lining and part of the roof desperately searching for a loose cable / bolt spanner that had been left in somewhere to no avail. Finally I removed the damper on the nearside completely and the rattle has stopped ????? please any ideas anyone !! could it be that the damper just twists the boot lid enough for it to rattle (after reading the other comments on here) your thoughts comments and advice appreciated
kind regards Rob

I assume they are the correct way up as car was only 11months old when bought it with just 7500 on the clock, the thick bit is at the bottom, ie: fitted to the main body of the car. tried jamming some cloth in the lock as I closed the boot still rattles.... gonna pack the rubber mounts in the morning and try that, next will reverse very fast into bollard and claim on insurance lol

I have seen No Parking on match days type sings on areas like Islington, Wembley, Watford etc.

I find signs like "Permit Holders only on match days" very confusing! How do I know whether it is a match day or not?

In the sixties I lived near arsenal stadium in Highbury. On match days, even then, you couldn't get a parker for love or money. The streets are wide up there and people used to park herringbone and down the middle. There will be more residents' cars these days and no spare space at all.

Is there much work out there for newly-qualified mechanics?

I've been thinking about taking the City and Guilds 4101 qualifications up to level 3. Is this a good qualification to get? ie- is it what employers are looking for? I know he AA/RAC mention that course in their job profile requirements......

The thing is, I'm 27 this month and I'd be 29 by the time I complete the course- would anyone want me at that age, even if I was fully qualified? Or are they just looking for 18 year olds? Read more

I believe it is better than plumbing electrical work etc. Many of those things can
be performed by DIY enthusiasts But very people will dare doing the work of car
mechanic.

Hehe, isnt that the truth!

Its not like 240V would kill you is it?

Leccy doesnt take any prisoners and yet people are quite happy to wade in there to save a few bob.

Intermittent lack of any power on trying to accelerate.

Main dealer says it needs a new turbo because the "boost activation is sticking".

Anyone had any experience of this? Any other (cheaper) remedies to suggest?

Many thanks.........

Remove turbo and get it cleaned by one of the specialist companies in that field?

A friend of mine has an A3 Tdi90 which is becoming a money pit, and mentioned in the pub that he regretted selling his H reg Mk2 Golf Gti 8V a few years ago. He had owned it from new for almost ten years, it ran like a dream, but he fancied a change (some change!!)
He only drives 8k miles pa, so mpg is not a major issue. Sourcing an immaculate Mk2 Gti for everyday commuting is well nigh impossible, but what other fun cars can anyone suggest?
Only criteria are hatch/estate (tip runs) minimum 35mpg in gentle driving and reliability. I am at a loss...suggested a post 2001 Cupra 20VT/Octavia Vrs but the possibility of £400 VED put him off! Budget is £5k ish.

"but the possibility of £400 VED put him off!"

Why not take a punt on this not happening and go and buy a car that will have depresed values because of the chance of £400 VED? I have a feeling that the adverse feeling of this restrospective tax will mean it not coming in to force.

My 2002 primera sve sat nav does not recognize the sat nav disc. A main dealer has informed me i need a new unit (obviously a tomtom would be cheaper).

I have cleaner the disc and also used a cleaning disc in the unit.

There is a lot of blue smoke coming out of my exhaust and the check engine warning light has come on. The turbo has been incredibly noisy and reluctant to boost recently and the car has had much less power then usual. Any advice? Read more

Have a look in Autotrader for your next car?

That sounds very like the turbo has expired. [Usually poor lubrication.]

I was sitting on the tube this morning and noticed an advert for the London Motorshow Music Festival. The line up includes ancient rockers like Status Quo, Deep Purple, Chicago, Meat Loaf - who'll no doubt bang out tracks from those rubbish 'driving anthems' CDs.

When will this depressing 'motorists music' stereotype die? Who actually drives around listening to 70s driving rock anthems? I'm 37 and spent my early teens listening to New Order and the great Manchester bands, then moved onto house and dance music before ending up appreciating soul and r'n'b.

Top Gear's theme tune is all dodgy guitar riffs too but the music used during the programme is usually pretty good.

The keen 70s motorist usually wore driving gloves, but no one would be seen dead in a pair now. The same should be applied to the music too.

I blame Clarkson and his love of Genesis.

Doubt if the current top 20 has a single decent track. In America I would expect there to be two or three, schlock but bearable, country and such. But perhaps times have changed and it's as bad as here now.

Just talking carp wireless muzak on the road of course.
