Hi all,

I have bought an R-reg Escort 1.8 Ghia X for a very good price but it has a number of small problems. I will post a new thread for each problem so people with knowledge of the particular issue will spot the topic and hopefully offer some relevant advice!

According to the MoT history the car covered 8,000 miles last year but only 300 miles the year before. Total mileage is 81,000, the condition of the car supports this.

Firstly, the heater blower motor. This runs v-e-r-y slowly when I first start the engine, with a faint "poorly electric motor" noise. I should mention that all 3 fan speeds work but the fan is only running at a fraction of the speed it should, ie on speed 3 it starts off running at an audible 10 revolutions per second or so, on speed 2 it is slower and on speed 1 barely turning at all. After a few seconds' running it gradually slows down and stops altogether. There is no burning smell and I have removed and cleaned the multi plug under the bonnet, so I now suspect the motor may have breathed its last.

The Haynes manual only gives advice on how to remove the fan once the aircon system has been depressurized and the evaporator removed. Is there a way around this or is the fan and the evaporator one complete unit? The aircon seems to be in working order (one pipe runs cool, the other runs quite hot) but doesn't blow freezing cold so I would be looking at having the system recharged at some point anyway.

If anyone has had experience replacing this part I would be interested to hear from them.

Many thanks, Dave. Read more

Heh, thanks brown for your reply. The original post was 18 months ago and I did indeed change the blower using your method. As it happened the aircon blew a high pressure hose shortly afterwards, I fixed that by getting a brass insert piece from a hydraulics supplier (for 2 quid, ha!) and jubilee clipping it in place. One 20 quid can of refridgerant / evil goo later and virtually full cooling effect was restored, still working today a year and a half later :-D

Hope someone can help here, I've been recommended this site by a friend and I'll freely admit I'm a bit lacking in knowledge here.

I've got an offer of an espace but it has a strange fault. Basically when you first start it you need to use gears 1, 2 and drive (as gear 3) as the automatic gear box doesn't work initially. When you have driven a mile or so you can turn the engine off and on again and the automatic gear box works fine.

Does a fault like this mean an automatic MOT failure? Anyone any idea please?

For £300.00 if you get 12 months out of it you have not lost owt!

Try to aggle a little cheaper if you can? if you can put up with the autobox problem then go for it, if it goes in the 12 month period then thats just hard luck..

Bought a 01 Xsara (mkII) from a salvage auction, has 2.0TD HDi engine. It had a big old wallop on the front end and we have sucessfully rebuilt it. Just a couple of spare parts as the saying goes.

Fitting the air cleaner housing went fine, apart from none of us can figure out where the inlet pipe comes from, fits the box fine but seems to drag on the floor, does anybody know where we attach the 'scoop' end?

There is what we suspect is the injector pump in the centre of the engine bay, hanging from the bottom of this is a length of, again, what appears to be a vaccuum pump, anybody with a notion of where the other 'dangly' end goes to?

Honestly we must sound a bit thick...all help gratefully recieved.

Cheers

bangermalc, in this situation, uploading a photo to somewhere like photobucket would help considerably.

I recently bought a Peugeot 407SW (2006 2.7 V6 Diesel)with 11k on the clock and am generally pleased with performance and economy. Its my first French car and getting to terms with it's Gallic idiosyncrasies is another matter. Satnav is invaluable to me and I have lived, very happily with Merc and Beemer sat navs for some years. I find the Peugeot satnav so fussy that i have stuck a "tomtom"one on the facia....no problem!!!!
Peugeot main dealers and Peugeot UK are equally non plussed and admit that it's what comes with the car...get used to it. When they saw tomtom stuck on the screen they were nonplussed about that as well. I can't believe their conclusion that Navteq cannot improve the capabilty by upgrading the software.
Amongst others, one problem that i would appreciate comment on, is the early shutdown of the accessories when at standstill with the key in place but not switched on ( there is no aux position) The computer display says "economy mode function" and according to the Manual should happen after 30 Mins. I find it to be anything from one minute to ten on average and never more than fifteen...I need 30 mins to set the Satnav!!!
Please tell me a)that I'm not alone with my opinion, and b) there are answers somewhere Read more

The SatNav is the same one as in my 2007 Citroen C5. I hate it. Its the most fussy complicated, slow, hard to use piece of kit ive ever come across. They couldnt have made it more complicated to use if they had tried. Even simple tasks like setting a destination are keyed in by the most contorted key inputs you could ever imagine. It cant even be set using a postcode. Truely dreadful in my opinion.

Grrr... so which bit of 'check mirrors' don't some people understand? Driving behind a girl in an old Frontera on Friday down my mother's narrow street. She suddenly stops, lets her friend out, puts the car in reverse and promptly issues my Mondeo with a free nose job courtesy of her spare wheel box.

As it happens I used to go to school with the girl and agreed to try to cut out the insurance kerfuffle at her apologetic request (yeah yeah, I know) and got a quote for putting it right at an accident repair centre on the industrial estate where I work. They are of the opinion that a new bonnet is the solution and gave me of quote of... £627.91 :O

So my question is, will the response be the same from pretty much anywhere? The dent is just above the radiator grille, about the size of a saucer, and comes complete with scratches in my otherwise perfect (OK, maybe not quite perfect) Stardust Silver. I think the poor lass is expecting someone to mallet it out for a fiver, but I don't want to waste my time 'shopping around' if replacement is the only solution and £600 is the going rate... I certainly don't want a bodge job either. I noticed she wasn't wearing any make-up, so I'm guessing the whole mirror issue isn't really her thing... maybe this'll change when I hand her the bill :p

Does anyone else get the feeling other drivers think they're a lesser person when driving around in a car with a dent on the nose, or am I just a paranoid snob...?! Read more

I'm tending to go along with what Steveo says at the moment, as I'm expecting the results to be perfect (paint's already got a good crack in it btw in a line following the contour 2cm above the oval grille). If I'd done the damage myself then a bodge job would be considered to save money, but I didn't, so it's not my money. I'm going to try Ford and another independent body repair place that's down the road from me on Saturday, then present her with the figures, but I think she's gonna get a shock...! If she wants to shop around for a couple of days after that then fine but I'm not wasting any more time on it. Thanks for the opinions!

My D5 engine is smoking profusely under light engine loads. Been into the Volvo garage. New Turbo hoses have been fitted, the EGR plenum has been cleaned and no fault codes have logged. The road test reported no smoke! Driving home gently at 1500 to 1800rpm and then accelerating produces steady smoke and then a billow as the car accelerates. The smoke is black. Looks like over fuelling. The engine runs very smoothly, mpg is good as ever, performance is slightly down on normal. Only noticed the problem this week and i have run the tank right down, put common rail injector cleaner through and put new fuel in. The air filter has also been changed. All the obvious things! Any ideas where to look next? Read more

Today's update. Been into the Volvo dealer. This time they have pressure tested the various hoses and fuel injectors. Turns out the intercooler has been damaged and needs replacing.
I will take a look myself and confirm before I am parted with £430 inc Vat for supply and fit.
I will check the fuel filter as well. I normally try and keep Volvo filters in use even if a local specialist does the work.

Hi all,

I've just today picked up my new Fiesta and headed over to my parents to change the stereo, instructions in hand. However, it's all good and well removing the stereo but because of the three strips in the stereo/fitting on the car you can't fit another stereo? Do you need to buy a new whole surround for the stereo - buttons? The Ford bloke who sold us the car said we would be able to put any stereo in, but I don't see how it's possible? Can anyone help?

Have the fascia but don't see how it will fit with the three bits of plastic which make it appear that the unit is in three?

The leader of the fuel protests suggested on the radio today that they may have to begin French style blockades to get the government to realise how much the fuel prices are hurting the haulage industry at the moment.

I have a suggestion, it's called slipstreaming.

Instead of insisting on overtaking every vehicle that is travelling 0.3 mph less than you are, sit back, relax and think about how you are going to spend the £10,000 that your manouvre would have cost you.

Pat (pda), im sorry i've given up trying to argue this any more.

Its flogging a dead horse, the one with the blinkers..;)

About 5 or 6 posts above, Westpig gave one of the most common sense answers i've seen on this and many more subjects.

Keep safe out there. GB
