On my last visit to Tesco, I noticed they now sell these snazzy new flat "aero"-style wipers at quite reasonable prices. I think they were designed for retrofitting to conventional arms. Has anybody tried them? Are they any good? Or their (very cheap) conventional wipers for that matter? Read more

Since Tesco were offering a BOGOF deal on conventional wiper blades and daughters car needed wipers, I tried a set and will report later. The initial impression is good, but the construction is old style with split (2) metal stiffeners per blade. I hope to report if they dont get nicked.....

The carriers look like a cheap copy of Bosch.

We have a ford escort 1989 auto 1.6. Only done 63,000 miles coolant last changed over 10 years ago. There is no discolouration but Ford no longer makes coolant we used. Ours is dark blue in coolant tank. I read new coolant from Ford isn't suitable for old models. Can anyone advise? Thanks! Read more

Thanks for infor and reassurance. I read that cautionary tale about new coolant on a ford forum. I can't remember the tech details but it was to do with advanced additives (?) in coolant. A member said his escort (a year older than ours) hadn't been the same since changing the coolant.

Hi all. Recently my 2.2D Primera has been idling at low rev and I can feel a lot of vibration through the seat. When I turn on the air con and the revs increase a tiny bit, the vibration is gone. Pulling off in 1st & 2nd, there is a worrying rumbling, kind of deep resonating sound coming from the engine. Brought it to the main dealer and one mechanic took it out and said it was fine, another mechanic took it out and said he thought it was misfiring and then they hooked it up to the computer and said that they couldn't get into it. Service manager said possible ECU, possible huge expense to find the problem, etc, etc, BS. Turbo is working, still quite responsive, but I'm just nursing it along over the last few days. Exhaust is fine, replaced air filter and cleaned air flow meter but had no effect. I'm worried about gearbox/transmission.

Another mechanic with 15yrs experience in the main dealers has had it today. He got into the ECU but no faults came up. He tried replacing the injectors but no difference. He says he'd be very surprised if it was the air flow meter. I got the clutch replaced on Nov 07 and he wonders does the Dual Mass Flywheel needs replacing too? Ouch expensive!

I have heard for several years now that Renault plan to launch the Dacia Logan in the UK at some stage, but never been able to pin down a date.

I'm very interested in getting one of the 7-seat estate models which are now available on the continent, but despite extensive googling I can't find any information as to whether this model will ever come to the UK.

If anyone on this forum knows the answer I'd be very grateful as I'm currently considering getting a Citroen Berlingo, but would rather wait for a the 7 seat Logan if it's going to be marketed here.

7000 pounds for a brand new 7 seater is a bit of a bargain in anyone's book. If only we could get them in the UK they'd sell like hotcakes.

I've just been checking the fluid levels in my C-Max and noticed the coolant is down to the minimum mark again. It'll be the second time in a year I've had to do top it up.

Is this normal or should I get the dealer to check it out? I thought you only had to top up the coolant reservoir very rarely. Read more

Sounds like a leak somewhere. Does the oil cap have any white on it ? Are there any signs of leakage coming up and out of the expansion tank ?

Hi, my car has been at the local garage waiting for a reconditioned propshaft, and my mechanic locked the car with the key rather than the keyfob, assuming this would lock the car without arming the alarm, as he was on holiday for a week. 3 weeks later, I unlocked the car and the alarm sounded, and the battery's fairly flat. Is there any way of locking the car without setting the alarm, or how can I disable it, as it just drains the battery when left for a few weeks. Read more

corax

i don't know how you can lock the car with the drivers door still open, but thanks, i'll try that tomorrow. I hate alarms, its well known that it runs the battery down on e36's after a few weeks. What happens if you leave the car parked and go on holiday for a few weeks, then come back to find the battery flat? The only answer is one of those solar trickle charge gadgets, personally I'd rather just lock the car without the alarm, everyone ignores them anyway!

Some of you may remember my saga from last year of the failed oil pump and the new engine needed on my 56 plate Passat 2.0tdi. Well, driving home last night the car suddenly lost all power and I coasted to a halt at the side of a dual carriageway. Called the AA, truck arrived after about 45 mins and after a few checks the guy diagnosed a fuel delivery problem, probably a failed fuel pump.

The car was towed to my home, and then taken this morning to the nearby VW dealers. I phoned this afternoon to check progress to be told it needed a new engine because a bolt in the cam belt tensioner had broken. They're giving me a courtesy car later today.

The original engine lasted 9k miles, the replacement has done just under 14k miles. (total mileage 22,900).

I am just stunned that this has happened. I have lost faith in the car now, even though it has just over a year's warranty left. And as to when it's out of warranty ..... (I had intended to keep it for 5 years).

At least it's at the same garage that fitted the first replacement and they made a good job of it.

I really am in a state of shock.

An update.

The car was ready for me on Friday afternoon, which is pretty impressive considering the garage didn't get the car for inspection until Tuesday morning. I can't praise highly enough the level of service I have received from Listers VW Evesham. I have put my thanks in writing.

I have also written to VW customer services asking for an extension to the warranty on the (second replacement) engine and for some form of compensation for the stress and inconvenience caused. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks again for the advice and support.

Ian (Cape Town)

I recall one of HJ's Telegraph colleagues - the golfing correspondent - won a Lambo a few years back in a hole-in-one competition at the ProAm before the Open.

Apparently he had to think long and hard about whether to accept the prize, which would have meant giving up his amateur status... in his own words 'About two seconds'!

Maybe HJ can shed some light on this?
