I Read a report on honest johns about honda accords. I have a 95 american built aerodeck estate. (2.2 auto) The article said the rover 600 was the accord under the skin, is this the case , and if so are parts interchangable ??? I see some good condition 600 cars at very cheap money.
I geuss thats because rover is over. Hmmm But would these cars actually be Accords with a different body. ???.... And are they as reliable as my accord which apart from wear parts is bullet proof. Apreciate your comments . ta the rugman

Daughter has a new Zetec S

The manual says that the locking can be set up to unlock only the drivers door on one push by holding the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously for four seconds. The car will confirm by flashing the indicators.

We have tried several times but all the car does is lock itself.

We have tried from both inside and outside the car.

She does not want to waste time going into the dealer - what are we doing wrong? Read more

Got the answer from zetecs.com

There is a menu that can be accessed on the dash (not detailed very well in the manual) that allows some set up changes to the car, similar to VAG's maxidot but not quite as user friendly.

IMHO Intermotor stuff is bin-filler - so I certainly don't have data on them; but measure the resistance between the two primary terminals.

hi everybody
i just bought a 1996 306 1.8 8 valve with only 20.000 real mileage.
The only problem i had is that i tried to change the spark plugs by my own today and found some corrosion and rubish in the plug wells in the cylynder head and now the car is not running well, in fact it didn´t start for several times until i reseted the computer by disconnecting the battery power.
Please any ideas will be of many help!!

Thanks in advance..

you should probably post in technical {now moved} - but your post isnt clear. Did you change the plugs? Did you get debris into the cylinder?

Has the car been serviced? Did it run well before you touched the plugs?

I would be looking to replace the plugs and leads. What about the distributor cap/rotor arm?

Every time I drive thru heavy rain the engine management light comes on and the engine goes into get home safe mode. Sensors have been cleaned, but it still happens. Breakdown engineer said they have had a similar problem mentioned in the breakdown bulletin recently, he said a faulty sensor is the cause which causes over fuelling and *injection circuit open" problems on the diagnostic computer. This has been happening since about 60K miles on clock. It's a 2 litre diesel Sep 04 model.

Anyone else had this problem and found a solution? It has defeated two garages so far.

Any idea of the exact code number? This could be water getting into almost any connector block and causing random effects.

Hopefully someone can help me.

I recently bought a Astra Sportshatch 1.6 Sxi with LPG conversion, ever since buying the vehicle I have been having two problems which are as follows.

1) The car starts fine from cold but in the first 5 - 10 minutes of driving it when breaking and coming to a complete stop at a junction, when applying the clutch the engine cuts out. There is no jerk as you would get from stalling. When you attempt to restart the engine it struggles to restart and can take up to 30 seconds before it fires up again.

This happens 2 or 3 times and then appears to run ok - this is all happening when running on petrol and not when the gas kicks in.

2) The other problem is related to power - I can get no more than 75-80mph out of it with my foot hard to the floor on the flat, any kind of incline and the power fulls away and if you are coming to a stop the engine again dies.

When running on Gas the problem does not seem to be happening.

As the car is still under warranty it has been going back to a Vauxhall dealer (3 differnt)but they are not finding the fault - Tech 2 reports no errors although they have changed the cat converter and various sensors.

I did not buy the car from a vauxhall dealer but another garage, I am trying to end the agreement under the Supply of Goods Act and am currently awaiting a date for Court as the finance company are claiming nothing is wrong because the garage can not find the fault.

Anyone have any idea or help ?

Thanks Read more

Hi,

I now have EXACTLY the same problem with my LPG converted astra sporthatch.

The dealer is saying the fault is caused by the gas itself going throuth the engine.
The LPG system has been fitted and works perfectly, but apparantly the Astra's engine isn't good enough to handle the gas.

Something in the gas makes the valves in the cylinder stick. Well, that was the explanation I was given anyway before they washed their hands of it and told me they couldn't fix it.

Could you please tell me what you found out since? Have you fixed it?

My mechanic is going to try and clean the valves to see if that's possible and if it helps.

Before I had it converted Vaucxhall told me there was no problem in doing so. Now they are saying they don't recommend LPG on Astras because of the engine, and of course I have no "record" of my original conversation and they don't want to cover it under warranty.

Cheers

A few weeks ago I posted that a friend of mine had asked me to source a car for her daughter who had just passed her test. Max budget £1k. Several cars I looked at were not as described, but I found a lovely T plate Micra, owned by the same family since new. Perfect.
Guess what...Micras are not cool because the little old lady over the road owns one! I am now informed it has to be a Saxo or Peugeot 106. Try finding one of them not owned/thrashed or modified by some young lad.
Back in my day, tha knows, I began saving for my first car aged 12, cleaning cars for neighbours, caddying at the golf club, paper rounds, mowing lawns etc. How times change.
PS. Anyone got one of the above for sale in North Yorks/Cumbria area?

Watch out for rust in the box sections under the front floor pan on the 106/Saxo..

I never bought either son a car: I assisted in their purchase of a car: 106 and old Mark 3 Fiesta: both replaced by younger 106s.

So no hassle over colour/style.. I choose a list of prospects, they whittle them down and then we go to see.

Any rejected fine.

Your task seems hopeless: email them a piccie first before you physically do anything: saves a LOT of hassle.

Imagine, if you were an oil company.Record profits , price rises weekly. Delighted shareholders..
But you start to hear noises of a consumer backlash . Prices are really starting to hurt people . At first they direct their wrath to the government for fuel duty, until they finally understand that's not the real issue .There's even silly talk about boycotts, which do no harm but you begin to think eventually someone may come up with a practical form of protest.
Then you learn that the company which delivers your fuel is in dispute with its drivers and they threaten a short strike. It won't actually do that much harm, and the drivers son't get much public support. But you realise that the public will become so paranoid about getting fuel, they don't notice the price so much for months afterwards.
So you sit back and let the strike happen. The delivery company know you will cough up extra rates when they do eventually settle , and - heavens- you can afford it.
No one would do that, would they? Read more

"they don't sell fuel here at a loss"
No. But they do make absolutely tiny profits here relative to turnover and cost of
infrastructure.
There's not much money from selling petrol in the UK (unless you're G Brown). That's
why the number of petrol stations is in decline.

The number of petrol stations is a Red Herring. The total volume of fuel sold is going to be more or less independent of the number of outlets. If a filling station closes you just drive further to refuel, you don't go without. Shutting stations probably increases profit by reducing overhead at the expense of customer convenience.

In terms of profit to the oil companies, well, let's think about it shall we. A product with millions of customers, finite and decreasing reserves, highly inelastic demand, a handful of suppliers and very high barriers to new entrants, lack of any viable substitute in the short-medium future. And they can't make any profit from it!! If that were really the case then the management should all be sacked!
