removed cylinder head, replaced worn camshaft & followers, replaced cylinder head using new gasket ect, rebuilt, car fired first time no more cam rattle but seemed to be a bit of back pressure from dipstick & filler cap at first thought it was steam but to be on safe side stripped engine replaced piston rings, rebuilt engine again fired it up now pretty sure that it is steam venting from dipstick & filler cap, any feedback will be appreciated, note had cylinder head pressure tested & skimmed when removed

Is it the right time to buy or would it be worth waiting to see if used car prices drop even further?
Is that a fair price for this car? Read more
Hi,
anybody know if a renault 19 engine is the same as the one in a 1.9D 2000 Kangoo as my neighbour suggested?
(I am searching the 'net for info about my overheating kangoo)
Also- any ideas how much it would cost to have the gasket replaced at an independant garage?
Many thanks,
Mike. Read more
Thanks again thomp.
Yes- it is the head gasket. Any idea how much a new timing belt and water pump would add to the cost when changing the head gasket? I planned to get a timing belt anyway (whenI'd saved up)as it is on 100k and I think there is a good chance it has never had one(last owner had it 18months and didn't get it done, and it had 7 owners before him- I know that is a lot but it looks in decent condition considering and was relatively cheapish)
Cheers,
Mike.

Can you recall if this sorted the problem at all once swapped? I mean it didn't split because of any undue pressure like a head gasket for exanple? I appear to have the exact same problem on my wifes 03 fiesta. Thanks
Hi, hope someone can help me! I have bought a '97 Ford Mondeo 1.8 TD LX estate, and it came with an MOT failure sheet stating "little or no operation of nearside rear brake". The previous owner had the car looked at by a garage, and the paperwork from them says faulty brake compensator valve. I have bought the part to replace it, but I can't seem to find it anywhere on the car. Does anyone know where it is? Also, Does anyone know if the symptoms I am experiencing are consistent with the valve being shot? I have removed the rear wheel and tried to bleed the brake, but no fluid comes out! Thankyou in advace for your time in replying to this post!

I retrofitted ABS on my 2000 estate and this concerned me for a while. If your 1997 is a blacktop as well I may have the answer.
In fact on the estate there is no load propotioning valve but instead there are two pressure limiting valves. They are not on the master cylinder as the manual says but as the back of the car just above the flexible hoses to the rear brakes.
These valves themselves should be quite easy to change.
Unfortunatley I had to replace the rear pipes as with ABS these valves are redundant and they are sandwiched between sub frame and fuel tank!
when reading the ignition firing order in my manual is the firing order taken from back of the engine ie the bulkhead Read more
thank u for the info
It`s often been said, that extended service intervals have been driven by Fleet considerations and it seems long service intervals are the last thing Main Dealers want.
It seems some are now gasping like Carp in a de-oxygenated pond, waiting for the one-bite-at-the-cherry (courtesy of long life oils) new car to come back for its only service in the warranty period.
Previously, the 12 month low mileage or 12,000 miles, had meant, with luck, three services, or bites at the motoring cash cow, before the car moves to Independents.
Two points then.
1)
Have you ever been hanging around the service desk, (or personal example) of a bit of old fashioned Main dealer creativity in generating a cash flow? (no names of course)
2) Do you think long life oils and service intervals are actually the norm, but some dealers have by various means tried to circumvent it to re-establish the cash flow?
3) Is it fear of bankrupting the franchises that stops some Japanese manufacturers bringing in ultra long life service intervals? The thought being that with their reputed reliability and lack of warranty work, that there would be no meat on the table at all.

I had an out of warranty fault on the Scenic (loss of power and "check injection" warning on the display). SWMBO limped it to the dealer who plugged it into the computer while we were there and reported the fault was relating to the turbo, but would need further investigation. We left it with them, fearing the worst.
They called a couple of hours later - all done. It was a split wastegate pipe - a few quids worth of hose. There would have been plenty of opportunity to sting me for a new turbo or other expensive part, but they were completely honest. The entire bill came to less than £90 including the part, an hour's labour for the diagnostics, and replacing a blown tail light bulb that I hadn't yet got around to doing. The car has run perfectly ever since.
It worked. They have gained a loyal customer. I was impressed with the last service they did on it anyway, but this just confirmed to me that they are not in the habit of generating revenue, even when given a golden opportunity.
This is a Renault dealer, but a small, single premises family owned business, not a plate glass palace that's part of a big chain. I think that helps - they need repeat business to survive.
Cheers

Hi all, my mum has a ford ka with the old croosflow pushrod engine, haven't looked at it yet, just want to get an idea of what could cause this problem, im thinking plugs and leads, just wondering if anyone has come across this problem before and what was the cause??? Thanks in advance !!!! :-) Read more
If it's on 3 cylinders, then yes; plugs, leads, coilpack, ECU.
I have seen a new road marking, at least new to me.
An S-bend on a single carriageway A road has just aquired a continuous red line down the centre, stretching a distance of about 200 yards. The line is about a foot wide. What does it mean? Does being continuous mean one mustn't cross it? Or is it just cautionary?
Previously there was only a dotted white line. Read more
Came across something similar on the A428 near Long Buckby last w/e. As I was on bike had chance to look closely. Seemed to be high grip or more likley high noise so as to have a rumble strip type function. Contained diamond shaped cats eyes in middle of red strip but no obvious centre line, broken or otherwise. Judging by its state it had been there for some time.
TdeF coverage from chopper shows something similar in France, mostly in urban calmed traffic type situations though, whereas the English example above was rural A road.
Hi,
Getting the car (110 hdi to 150ish) remapped next week. Its recently had a new clutch on it and soon to have its alternator belt done too, along with new brakes (pads and discs) and new suspension coils + shock absorbers in the last 6 months... oh and new tires all round!
I believe the cambelt is the original, and its done 61k. Oil done in the last 5k, and most my driving is motorway based. Air filters and such were done with the oil change. Recently flied through its MOT... mind you, had a bit done to it beforehand!
Have already paid the extra for the insurance, so covered as soon as I get remapped.
Anything else I should check before taking this for a remap next Saturday?
Thanks in advance Read more
Its getting done on Saturday (12th) so I'll let you know much more by then. Dyno before will be interesting!
