I need a pair of tyres for the front of my 406 HDi.
The last set I bought, just before the MOT in Feb 2007,have worn at the shoulders, and looks like they'll need replacing very soon.
Anyone recommend a hard wearing tyre, for the fwd 406 HDi? Read more
First time posting and no technical knowledge so please forgive me (not a very good advert for women drivers I'm afraid!).
A few months ago my Fiesta started to rev wildly whenever I changed up a gear - no additional acceleration but huge revving sounds. Fortunately it was due in for its MOT and my garage assured me it wasn't the clutch going, the idler valve simply needed replacing.
This was all replaced at the beginning of May but it has now been doing the revving again for a couple of weeks intemittantly. Also, when driving to work this morning when I was in 1st but stationery the engine was revving as if I had the accelerator down (it wasn't - I had the handbrake on). Revved upon moving off and changing up gears but when I came into the office carpark and was crawling along and parking the engine was again revving horribly and seemed to be giving me more power so throwing the car forwards a little.
This has scared me somewhat and I am nervous of trying to drive home tonight in case this all means the accelerator is getting stuck, not just the idler valve faulty again.
Any thoughts from anyone? Apologies for the lack of techno speak! Do I need to get this to a garage and should I even be driving it?!
Maybe its time I gave up (having spent £500 on the blooming thing in the past few months alone!).
Thanks for any help :-)

this will be the throttle position sensor (TPS) wiring loom problem. there is a wiring loom available with a new terminal on it. The old terminal needs cutting off and the new one needs to be soldered directly into the wiring loom running across the plastic bulkhead because it picks up engine interference which is why it revs on its own. The only problem is there are loads of wires in that loom so you need to get the right ones.
On my 2007 Hyundai S111 coupe and SWMBO 2007 Hyundai Getz 1.4l we have the same radio problem.
They seem to enter the 'TA news' setup spontaneously. And pressing the 'i' button ,as per the manual, does not get out of the news station and back to R4. We have to go back to the full manual selection of 'TA Off' then 'TA on', 'News off'. I just want to hear the trafic announcements .
Anyone else with a Hyundai solved this?

Hello all,
Looking to buy a 2005/05 Astra 1.6 Club. In one guide I looked at it showed two model years, 05 and 05A. The 05A was built from December 2004.
I am only interested in getting the 05A model year which has CBC + Brake Assist which the 05 doesn't. How can I tell if the car I am looking at is the 05A model year? Cannot relie on just registration!
I have spoken to a seller over the phone and they were unable to allocate any of these numbers on their documents or car.
Any assistance much appreciated. Read more

I have a friend who is having a company round in the next day or two to look at two small repairs on her car interior. Both caused by an inattentive friend with a cigarette, one on the seat, one on the roof lining.
She would like to know a reasonable ball-park figure for repairing such things, so she has an idea whether she's being ripped off or not. Can anyone help?
Can these companies do spot repairs on this type of thing? Seats are fabric by the way. Read more
You'd be surprised what can be repaired at reasonable cost. I doubt that there are many rip-off merchants in the coachtrimming business, but the easiest way to check is to get more than one estimate. These are crafts people, who will want to give you a good result; they say things like "No, I wouldn't do a cosmetic job on that because you will not be happy with the result" -- their motivation being a good result rather than inflating their charge time. They shouldn't be charging much more than independent mechanics' rates, if that -- £50+ an hour?
I've had several jobs done by Barton & Son in Luton. Mr Barton was able to warn me that replacement piping on an armrest would be 1mm thicker than the original and therefore noticeable but probably acceptable -- I said go ahead and he was proved dead right.
Check out coachtrimmers in Yellow Pages and Google. Where are you?
dear john ,how do i adjust my head light please as it shines up in the sky thank you. Read more
Headlights don't go out of adjustment without a reason; when did it happen and what caused it?
I purchased my Panda Active in December 2004. Within a week I had to return to the garage as the reverse gear would not work. The mechanic found an incorrect fitting on the lever (apparently meant for a different model) and replaced the part.
With less than 500 miles on the clock, the car refused to start. The AA attended and the mechanic discovered the battery was not the one which should have been in the car. After ringing the dealer he was told they could not help and he rang round various dealers and finally drove to the nearest town and brought back a Lucas battery.
There is also a continuous rattling in the front passenger window when it is half open, for which there seems to be no cure.
All this time through into 2007 I had still not been able to use the car radio because no handbook had been supplied, and a code number was required to activate. Ringing the manager only produced a promise to look into the matter. Finally early this year I drove to the garage to find a new manager, who said there was no handbook available and the controls were very simple. When I said it could not be activated, they found the code on their computer and the radio was finally working. The trouble started when I wanted to use a tape. Visiting the garage with a tape I again asked for assistance. The mechanic inserted the tape; nothing happened and he could not release it. He removed the radio, had to borrow one of my tools and after a lot of shaking and pulling, managed to remove the tape. He then re-inserted the tape with the same result, only this time he could not remove it. I was then told that if I wanted the tape back, I would have to pay to have the radio dismantled. When I said it was his responsibility as he had inserted the tape, I was again told they did not have the facilities and I would have to pay in the region of £80 for it to be sent away and have the tape removed. I refused to pay as I considered it is their responsibility.
I generally change my car after three years but how can I sell it with a faulty radio and no handbook. I can get no satisfaction from the garage, as once the car was sold their attitude changed and were just not interested.

My daughter's Panda 1.1 Active has clocked up 30,000 miles in 2 years with nothing more needed than routine sevicing. Still on original tyres ( I swap them round every 6,000 miles) and front brake pads are not even 50% worn.
For a car purchased new (pre-registered) for £5,600 on the road, motoring doesn't get much cheaper.
When did "fifth wheel" couplings take over from "Scammell Couplings" on artics?.I passed my Class 1 in the early seventies on a Scammell equipped vehicle but we had to know how to couple/uncouple a fifth wheel vehicle and I presume the opposite applied at that time.I doubt it forms part of the test now. Thanks;I took my test on a "D" with a full size trailer.

That's because the Montego needed a calendar to measure the acceleration, not a clock. Austin dealers would have probably thrown one in for "sporty" drivers... ;)
She drives a 53 plate Freelander Td4 S with about 60k on the clock - it was a demo when we got it. A bit scuffed and worn but nothing a bit of tlc wouldn't cure. Trade in price maybe £4500?
She wants to reduce her carbon footprint and fuel costs.
Most journeys are either 15 mile commute or 70-80 round trips about twice a week.
We have two kids and a dog, but I drive a Legacy estate so a smaller car is desirable on costs/enviro grounds.
Budget for new car about £15k
Questions for BR:
1. Is it actually less enviro friendly to trade up to a newer (but styill second hand car) on the basis that the elast green car is a newly made one and the closer you get to the new car market, the more you fuel it?
2. If prices are softening is it more economic to suffer depreciation on a car worth around £5k with 25mpg than to suffer the depreciation on £15k but get perhaps 45mpg (and lower road fund)
3. If she does switch what would you go for with the above criteria - badge is quite important so Kia's etc whilst they may be admirable cars are not going to get a look in

"You can buy fresh oil around here for about 50p a litre in 20/25 litre containers."
Where's here? - but I doubt it seriously - very little oil is being sold at less than 90p/litre, even in bulk.

The Bridgestones on my 406 hdi have done almost 30k no prob & still have at least 5k in them I reckon.
