Recently bought our 3rd 405TD. The position of the oil sump drain plug differs from the other 2 we had. Could someone tell me what the 13mm size bolt below what I assume is the actual drain plug, is for? Am about to do an oil change and dont want to ruin the sump! Read more

"Does anyone know if they have upped the amount of points you need? "
It used to be 15 points per litre, but i've not been there for a few monthas now.
I'm sure this has already been moaned about but i've just had a Victor Meldrew moment and thought i'd get it off my chest. Why do lorry exhausts emenate at ground level? Also PSV's and other large diesels. Surely if they enemated at high level as in the USA the toxic fumes would dissipate before reaching us at ground level. Read more

Just started up my mothers' 1.6 'Mardi Gras' automatic, because she said it has developed a knocking noise. It is there at idle, and it does increase with engine revs. I've moved it backwards and forwards on the drive just using Reverse and Drive with no additional input from accelerator, and it moves smoothly with no juddering. She hasn't driven it very much in the last 3 months, so that could be why this has developed. Any ideas folks please before it goes to the Peugeot Garage??
Thanks, Mark Read more
The garage in the village have had a look and their verdict was 'burnt-out valves and no compression'. I thought that if engine had no compression then it wouldn't be driveable. Does oil starvation or old age do this to an engine so suddenly?
I have noticed the engine cooling fan on my car has been on a couple of times lately whereas I don't normally hear it (I am a bit paranoid about my car). Is this a sign of impending radiator/water pump problems ? The coolant level is correct but I have noticed that when I check the coolant reservoir when the car has sat overnight, that there are "bubbles" on the inside surface of the top of the reservoir (not in the coolant) which I assume is just condensation. It this normal ?

Just to add, the bubbles in the expansion bottle are just condensation and is very common.
Test drove a 2004 (54) Legacy 3.0 Spec B Tourer this morning. Advertised at £11k by a main dealer. Seemed like a sound car, except for 1 x nearly bald tyre and scuffs on all the alloys - which was irritating, as car had been described as 'mint' when I rang to arrange the test drive. Front bumper panel gap a bit big on one side if I'm being picky. Dealer offers me £300 fo my 99T Mazda 323 (85k miles), which has FSH and one previous owner but tatty bodywork, including badly rusted rear arch.
Dealer said he would throw in a service, MOT, 12 month Subaru warranty, and replace the tyre. Quoted me £10,250 (cost to change). No tax on the car.
Is this a good deal? I think these cars are only going to get cheaper over the next 3-6 months. Read more
Thanks for that - definitely worth knowing about the refurbishers. It's been really helpful to get Backroomers' advice on the wisdom of waiting for the right car. I only hope that petrol prices don't continue to drop(!) as that could interfere with my strategy of picking up a gas guzzler at a rock bottom price....
I am just fitting a towbar and vehicle specific wiring kit to my 2005 Multispace.
The wiring kit was easy up until the part where the instructions said to route a wire to the front of the car and connect it to the battery. I managed to get the wire as far as the front passenger footwell using the existing channel located on the n/s under the plastic floor trim, but I cannot find anyway to get from the footwell into the engine compartment. (The existing loom seems to be routed between the inner and outer front wing, but I can see no way to use that same route without removing the front wing!)
I don't really want to start drilling holes in the bulkhead... is there a way to get a wire through?
Alternatively, as the wire concerned is only a 12v feed for the additional trailer relay, I thought about taking a feed of off one fof the auxillary 12v power sockets - any reason why not?

My Rev counter has recently decided to intermittantly stop working , when you first start up it is working ok, then during your journey it will stop and start at will sometimes staying off for long periods and sometimes flicking up & down several times before settling at where it should be. this can happen several times or not at all. As its a deisel I am not sure where it operates from as in petrol (the Coil) can anyone help. Read more
The sensor on most XUD engines is on the top of the gearbox just below the cylinder head. Its not very easy to get at but there should be a connector just above which is quite likely causing the problem. Disconnect it, give it a good clean then a thin film of grease. If that doesn't do it, its probably a faulty sensor. It could also possibly be a poor connection on the instrument panel.
My 206 has got me stumped and i am at the end of my rope with it even though so far in the quest to solve this its had a replacement decoded ECU and the Bugicord coil pack. Before the ECU was changed it was hesitent on the revs and also cut out often at junctions and sometimes did not want to restart.
Since this has been changed things have improved but i still have what i can only describe as a 'judder'. Say i am driving along in a string of traffic in 3rd the car will hesitate and then pick up again with a bit of a judder. I have not had cutouts recently after changing the ECU but i have not given it a 'decent' run. At no point has any light come on the dash or any code been logged in the ECU.
I wonder what sensors or other such could cause this judder/hesitation which almost feels like the ignition has been cut for a moment? The only other thing i note is that when it half cuts i hear what i think is a relay click in the drivers side fuse box? I have given everything in there a bit of a tap but i wonder if there is something more i can check. The local independent has no clue on this one.
thanks for any help as i am getting no where fast.

The dash click is probably the "engine running" circuits relay.
That will get it's signal from either the fuel-pump circuit or the engine ECU.
Might be worth checking the inertia switch and it's plug too.
Hello!
My old polo II recently started having some problems. When i turn the engine on, it starts fairly easily, but the revs suddenly falls, and then the engine is impossible to start again. Only two things can start it:
1. Remove the air-filter cover at put some petrol directly into the carb. This method dosent work any longer. It will start with the petrol injection, but it cuts out again after 10 secs.
2. Remove the air filter and place a hand on the carb. air intake. When somebody turns the key, you feel a suction on the palm of your hand, then i remove it quickly and the car starts...usually takes 2-3 tries.
If the car has been runing within the last 8 hours, it starts without any problems.
Im wondering...whats the problem, and what should be replaced?
What model carburettor is in the car?

There is a long history of discussion about these carbs on this site. Suggest you do a forum search, try polo carb pierburg etc as search terms

My 93 405 TD has a bolt head on the back wall of the sump, i've never touched it, not sure what it's for. The drain plug is on the bottom of the sump, not sure what the other one that you refer to is for, mine hasn't got that one.
