I'm sure this has already been moaned about but i've just had a Victor Meldrew moment and thought i'd get it off my chest. Why do lorry exhausts emenate at ground level? Also PSV's and other large diesels. Surely if they enemated at high level as in the USA the toxic fumes would dissipate before reaching us at ground level.

I've noticed this too.
Correct me if I'm any lorry drivers out there, but it's something to do with chassis design or the exhaust filters?
|
Ive seen a fair few european lorries which dont have the kerb level exhausts you are talking about. Buses presumably because the priority is passenger space and routing it either up the back or through the middle of the bus is rather impractical.

upright exhaust stacks don`t come as standard and are specified by vehicle purchasers or employed drivers who have good bosses, but i agree that they make sense , i think it has something to do with the cost of manufacture

A vertical exhaust needs a sturdy frame to support it - HGV exhausts aren't light.
The HGV already has a sturdy chassis frame, so, a vertical exhaust is costly in that it needs extra metal work which reduces the payload of the vehicle. Vertical exhausts, being on view, need to be more expensively coated, while those underslung can be painted mild steel (the paint doesn't last long!). Being vertical, a vertical exhaust also needs either a flap valve, or a n angled tip section to prevent the exhaust being filled with water in the rain.
Apart from owner drivers (who for some reason like to waste their profits on fripperies!), the other users who specify different exhausts are petrol trucks, where the exhaust tends to be mounted beneath the front bumper, exhausting ahead of the front wheels.

Well, thinking about it, why don't car's have a vertically mounted exhaust ?

Why don't cars have a vertically mounted exhaust?
....because you couldn't get the bonnet to shut....?

Well thinking about it why don't car's have a vertically mounted exhaust ?
They do in Japan it's the latest craze for the modified breed! Im not saying it looks at asthetically pleasing to some, as they do look like drainpipes sticking out of the bonnet & the boot too!

Well thinking about it why don't car's have a vertically mounted exhaust ?
Because then they'd be pumping out their fumes fumes at a height perfectly calculated to blast straight into the face of anyone who leans over that part of the car. (It's a difft matter on trucks, where the exhaust goes way beyond head height).
