I am currently helping friends in California, returning later this month, and have just received an email from a friend. She needs to change her 55plate 2.0D4D XTR with 50k miles as a matter of urgency i.e. within the week. She is happy to part ex the vehicle, but has offered it to me for circa £8,500.
It is in average condition, plenty of minor scratches, but she has owned it from new, has full main dealer service history and no accident damage. Two dogs and children mean it is NOT immaculate inside.
Please could anybody tell me what mpg I could expect in the real world...having looked at the Vauxhall website to value the car, the price seems fair, and those listed on Autotrader online at dealers are much more. I appreciate there is no warranty...is a cambelt change imminent so that I could negotiate on price?
Any advice much appreciated, as I would be buying the vehicle 'blind' by email!

I would say that most people looking for something like this want a nice clean example. this sounds anything but clean. The price sounds fairly keen but obviously taking into consideration the condition it may not be too far off it's realworld value. From memory the D4D's have a cambelt change at 60k so its not far off.

I am having similar results - 20/25 around town and 27/30 on long trips. I also suffer from extremely low power at low revs - do you have the same problem.

The front passenger side door wont lock via central locking. I've been told the solenoid has gone and so it's best to replace the solenoid (motor?). are the drivers side and front passengers side the same motor used, so it wont matter which one i buy???

The locking solenoid is part of the door latch and is not replaceable as a seperate item. The latches are handed ,so only a n/s/f door part will fit.hth

Hello,
My November 2003, 33000 miles 1150RT has let me down, big time. The splines on the gearbox input shaft have stripped. Do any of you know of issues with this 1150 engine gearbox set up? I think a 4 and a half year old bike should not fail like this, especially a tourer. I have serached the internet and there are a couple of cases, but I would expect not to many 1150`s have reached high enough mileage yet to fail? The bike has been BMW serviced since new and I feel BMW should repair the bike for free. Any help comments etc will be good. Thanks

Do a cold compression test and if that's OK; get the injectors tested.

D'oh.

The hateful anti theft bolts were on so tight that I have damaged the slots for the special adapter key. The key itself is still OK. The bolt heads. with the four slots that the key fits around, are now really knackered and the key just slips off. Each time it slips it makes things worse.

Help, any advice please? Read more

Basically I used a bottle jack (pushing horizontally against a wall) ......

Had to resort to the same method to remove a damaged locking bolt from an old Cavalier I used to own.

The car is an Imagine 1.7 CDTi with an 03 plate.
A couple of times recently the engine has cut out whilst in slow moving traffic queues and the Malfunction and Glow Plugs warning lights come on. The car will not restart for a couple of minutes and the warning lights stop on. The engine needs to completely cool down before the warning lights revert to normal.
The first visit to the Honda Dealer resulted in "No fault apparent" but following the second visit they have ordered a sensor (?).
Does anyone have any ideas please?

During the recent cold spell our car suddenly stopped - without warning - whilst going uphill. Glow plug light on and MEL.

Given that we live 500ft up on the Pennines (and the temp got to -14) I suspected the diesel was waxing up...or water in the fuel filter had frozen. Checked filter - no water in...but problem re-occured next day. As the temp hadn't got above freezing I thought that maybe there was still a problem with crystals forming somewhere in fuel system.

So, left car in village in valley...and as soon as temp was above -0 for 24 hours I tried running it...and it's run fine (fingers crossed) since.

These symtoms are so similar to those mentioned above - I'm wondering if a temporary fuel blockage tricks some over-sensitive common rail sensor into switching off the engine to avoid damage to the injector system?

Just posting this as a marker...in case anyone else has problems in this cold spell!

Cold or hot - looks like a 1.7 can suddenly stop!

Wishing everyone trouble-free motoring in 2010!

Just had to share this. I have just had to walk back from our local newsagents pushing my bike. Not because the bike is faulty but because I simply could not ride it for more than 30 yards at a time between fits of uncontrollable laughter..

My good friend and neighbour has been bending on this week about how he needs to reappraise his lifestyle. He feels that there is rather too much of him these days and that some exercise is urgent. He has also, like many of us, been giving some pause to whether all his car journeys are strictly necessary.

Well, this morning I spied him fetching his son's mountain bike out of the garage as I cycled past on my way to get the Sunday reading matter. "Hang on" says he ( think Brian Blessed levels of volume ) "I'll join you". So we pedal off chatting about how much diesel we are saving on this three quarter mile jaunt alone. The internal chuckling started as early as this because my friend, as previously mentioned, is currently largish and his son's bike is one of those with full suspension, resulting in him performing this sort of quaint up and down bobbing motion as we proceeded on our mission. Finally we reach the vicinity of the paper shop which faces the road we have cycled down forming a T-junction at the bottom of a hill. We, like any normal middle aged men, have by now begun to race a bit. I reach the kerb outside the shop marginally ahead, bunny hop the bike up onto the pavement and stop. Meanwhile, my neighbour attempts the same technique but confuses the suspension, flies over the handlebars and sort of body surfs straight through the open door of the shop and slithers on his ample belly a good ten feet or so down the the tinned goods aisle, roaring obscenities as he goes. He finally came to rest by the baked beans. The bike remains outside with a now rather rearranged front wheel.

The sort of thing that looks too staged in movies, so you don't quite believe it.

Very funny shoespy. I am assuming since this person is a friend of yours your mirth might have been more moderate if he had come to any physical harm...

They should send someone with the new ones to change them - if they're drilled then needs to be in the right place and if they're stuck on then they can be hard to get off.
