As some of you regulars may know, i drive a large car transporter for my sins.
This week i came very close to being in a nasty accident, closest for some time actually.
Coming south on the M6 one afternoon, usual amount of traffic, i'm doing 54mph (on the limiter), overtaking another large articulated truck travelling at about 50mph, no problem so far.
As i draw alongside the cab of the other truck, he starts to come closer to me, it happens often, we've all seen it and normally just a slight deviation.
He continued on the same course, and was by now probably 2 feet into my lane still on the same track.
I had to put my offside wheels onto the third lane , and leaned on the horn (pretty loud), which i'm sure the driver of the astra going by me at the time must have cursed me, as he probably didn't have a clue what the cause was (i left him enough room but it must have been scary)
The other truck suddenly and violently swerved back onto the nearside, but did it too much and i watched him veer almost onto the armco on the hard shoulder, however he recovered and we all carried on ok.
Now i'm convinced the other driver had dropped off, and the sudden waking up caused the heavy reaction.
For myself, i could have braked hard, but two things in mind, if he had carried on course, he would have been fully in my lane before i could have dropped back enough, probably pushing me and whoever else onto the central reserve, apart from that i didn't want a full bore panic stop with a truck on the motorway, that itself would have caused mayhem.
If we were going to connect, i wanted it to be cab to cab, so at least i could control the stop, and possibly his route if he'd had a heart attack or something.
Thats the closest i've come for many years to a potential very serious prang, and i've replayed it over many times.
What would you have done different to me? Criticism gladly accepted. Read more

Could someone please advise whether the 1.6 115 bhp engine as fitted to the Focus is actually derived from the Yamaha designed 16v engine or from Ford`s own Duatec design.?

>>the 1.6 115 bhp engine as fitted to the Focus>>
Depends what you mean by 08 - according to the Ford brochure, the 115bhp 1.6 is no longer fitted to the latest Focus.
The 1.6 they do fit is under 100bhp.
Been perusing for new car, liked the look of the mazda 2, had test drive, just about to start
thinking about colours and when to order, then yesterday picked up what car which had the
new fiesta as a big feature.
Really like the look of it especially the interior, question is, is it worth hanging on till this is in the dealers or given that the mazda will have better residuals should I go for that?
Another small niggle is the review Whatcar gave the mazda, they don't rate it at all.
(Which admittedly is the only poor review Ive read about it)
Any help for a very indecisive bloke appreciated!!! Read more
Wait for the new Fiesta and then test drive them both before you decide.

Hi all
Just bought a 406 HDI 90 with water leak, traced it to the thermostat housing.
I have put everything back except the turbo pipes and now it won't start!
Turns over, fuel is is priming but nothing.
Also I noticed the immobiliser icon on the dash does not come on although the bulb is working? I cannot remember weather it did before ony had it for 1 day.
ANY IDEAS I AM PULLING MY HAIR OUT THANKS Read more
I recently had the same problem after fitting a t-belt kit and it was the fuel inertia cut off switch...red rubber button located usually on either drivers or passengers side at the bulkhead ( just behind the engine bay ) and if you press it and you hear it click down it then is de-activated and will let the engine start... its worth a try.
I am looking to buy a second hand van (around £3k) for transporting dogs around in (e.g. Berlingo/Kangoo maybe an Expert/Dispatch size)
Does anyone have any advice on what commercial vans convert well to LPG. I have heard to avoid Japanese makes and Berlingos suffer from valve seat discretion.
Also, do any vans have sunken spare wheel compartments? I need all the room I can get in the back of the van for cages.
A local LPG garage fits tartarini systems. Are these well regarded?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Read more
The chances of a police dog-handlers' van being thrashed is pretty unlikely. It's almost certain
to have been assigned to one officer not been a pool vehicle and most trips
will have been inside the legal limit. Police dogs normally live at home with their
handler so the van goes home too.
Plus the dog is mighty grumpy if its thrown around the back and likely to bite its handler on exiting same.
(mind some forces dogs are so wimpy they cant bite thier pedigree chum, let alone a scroat I saw one case where a handler had to lift and carry his dog over a 5 bar farm gate - I ask you - suprised the handler didnt bark himself)
Hi , my 1998 Nissan 200sx speedo has stopped working, does anyone know if it is cable driven or by electric sensor?
It stopped working once last year but fortunatley it started working again of it's own accord! Regards, Will Read more

Squeaking sound come from front brake every now and again. It doesn't happen consistently i.e. sometimes work perfectly while other times just give out this annoying sound. This annoying sounds come out more often than usual in the past 2 months.
Just got the car back from service & MOT. The mechanic suspect it might have something to do with brake disc being distorted perhaps? He hasn't fixed it as he couldn't work out why after checked and polished brake pad etc.. What else? It passed MOT as it worked perfectly then!
The mechanic works from his back garden workshop, but has been really good all along. Will a proper car lift shows up something wrong, which means I need to bring it to a more well establshed garage? Read more
"Low pad warning squeal device?"
My Mazda 6 certainly has this - check your Corolla's handbook to see if Toyota do something similar.
