A friend of mine is a buyer for a main dealer of a German luxury car marque.

Basically he says they are completely stuffed with demos and conventional used stock and even after the manufacturers bonus, they are going to lose almost a six figure sum on the demos alone.

He has has told me that one of the options they are considering is dumping all their old stock and re-entering the market aggressively marking down all bids - he is bidding at the moment on the basis of what he feels the car would be worth in 2 months as sales are so slow at the mo anyway.

So my question is, to your knowledge have any other dealers main or otherwise gone nuclear and just dumped their existing stock for the best price they can get in order to obtain stock at more realistic valuations? I know it happened in the early nineties, but am wondering about the current position today.

The London restaurant trade is very heavily bolstered by the City in the £50 to 100 price bracket. Without that it would collapse.

I've been away for a couple of weeks and when I tried to get into eBay classic cars on my return, for my usual browse and dream, I found everything changed.
Instead of a list of 'classic' cars and a simple search by make there is just a search page with a load of vehicles of all ages and types and a choice of search between 'classic' and 'modern' with options for year - from about 2000! - and things like mileage. In fact, nothing to help someone browsing for an old car.
I've already given up on eBay cars because since they animated the first search page it doesn't work for me at all.
Does this mean I now can't look at eBay classic cars either? Or am I missing something simple?
Any ideas welcomed. Read more

Thanks djt100, that's the one!
I still think it's weird, though.
Yesterday I showed SWMBO the headline on James May's Telegraph piece - he agrees that now is the time to buy a Bentley...
PS: In my opinion all wire wheels should be painted silver or the body colour - none of them were chromed when new and I believe Rolls Royce used to advise that using chrome-plated spoked wheels would invalidate their guarantee, for safety reasons.

Most of my neighbours/colleagues have either Focus or Astra! They are also favourite of fleet owners.

Reliability of these two models are not exemplary and they are not cheap either.

So, why they are so popular? Read more

if your looking for a cheap astra type car but with reliability buy a daewoo lanos .. cheap as chips

Without detailed knowlrdge of this set-up, here's a guess: The sender for the gauge is no longer properly earthed and there is a sneak-feed from the fuel pump positive line to what should have been the sender earth.

Check all wiring very carefully against the diagrams if possible. This type of fault is almost invariably poor workmanship rather than a faulty unit - you may well find something has been left off. My guess is the thin earth wire for the sender.

If you remove the tank unit for any reason, observe due precautions relating to electrical shorts and explosions.

Do any countries have bilateral agreements with the UK in respect of motoring offences? A poster on another forum is suggesting that Australian authorities will pursue a UK national (in the UK) who has been caught speeding if he does not pay the fine in Australia. Read more

Bagpuss

I am not aware of any bilateral agreements with the UK for traffic offences except, possibly, Ireland. There are agreements between Austria, Switzerland and Germany though, as some of my colleagues here have found to their cost!

If, however, you are in a rental car in any country and get caught by a speed/ traffic light/ tailgating camera or get a parking ticket, the rental car company will pay the resulting fine on your behalf and then bill you via your credit card, irrelevant of your nationality.

Has anyone any idea what happened to the retro rides database?

I found it a very useful reference tool. I've tried the Rochford tyres site, but it doesn't seem to hold the PCD data. Any suggestions anyone? Read more

I'm referring to the feathered variety. Sorry.

I clean the cars once a week if possible;I have recently been bombarded with bird pooh almost daily for the past two weeks.
I can't afford the time and money to clean the cars everyday, so can anyone give some tips as to how best to remove the mess.

I know if left long enough it will eat into the paintwork, so any advice would be much appreciated. Read more

Keep a detailing spray such as Meguiars Quick Detailer in the boot along with a microfibre drying towel.

Squirt the offending material with spray, then simply wipe.
