Just out of curiosity, on my last service the garage noted that my tyre tread depth is 3mm, legal limit is 1.6. At what depth do people here replace their old tyres with new? Read more

Hi All,

My wifes dad bought her a peugeot 206 last night to replace her 106, after taking it to my work today i noticed that the clutch is slipping slightly.

It only happens after i've just changed gear and give it full throttle, after a few minutes it settles down and drives fine and dosen't slip again until i change gear. the car has 94,000 miles on the clock so it s probably still the original clutch.

What would like to know is, does the clutch sound knackered to you guys or can you adjust them at all?

If i'm looking at a new clutch does any of you's know a rough time estimate or price for a garage to do a job like this?

Thanks very much in advance.

Hi there. We have an extremely annoying issue with the locks of our Ford Ka, and we thought someone here might be able to help.

These are the "symptoms"

1. Key will not open the driver's door (right).
We put the key inside the lock, move it in any direction, and nothing happens.

2. Using key on passenger's door makes the lock do a complete cycle.
If we try to unlock that door, we can hear the internal lock opening and locking back again. We have realized that if you grab the handle while the lock is half way thorugh its cycling, the door will open. While the door is open the lock keeps cycling endlessly.

3. Every time we get in the car, it makes us look as if we were stealing it.
To enter the car we must get into the passenger door, turn the key, pull the handle half way through the cycle, open the door, get inside, travel to the driver seat, and close the door. Once we close the passenger's door, we can hear it finish the cycle, and go quiet. The whole thing is hugely embarrassing.

4. We can't unlock the driver's door, even from inside the car.
Pulling the internal handle will open the door, but the lock remains applied, if that makes sens; the hanle is still facing inwards, like ford's do when the lock is applied.

We've looked through these forums, and while we can see that Fords are prone to experience issues with their locks, we haven't found anyone with exactly our problem.

Any help would be much appreciated.

This problem continues up to 2000-models(and prob. later).

Same symptoms: Won't open from the drivers side, lock goes into a infinite cycle. +minus 20 degrees celcius and lower: won't make the car do anything....

All the engineers at the company I work for have all been issued with 2007 Focus 1.8 TDCI estates. Not a bad car but rather dangerous at low revs on roundabouts and such like. It seems that unless you get the engine revving and slip the clutch we have no power available. This is even the case if the car is moving at walking pace in first gear.
I have had a couple of nasty turns trying to get onto roundabouts in London because of this flat spot. All three cars have the same problem, and it is much worse than on my old 2003 Mondao diesel estate. One of the guys had 2000 diesel Focus and he confirms the same deterioration. Any ideas??

I recently traded in my Mk 1 (2003) Focus 1.8TDCi. As someone has already pointed out, the stalling is deliberate if engine speed drops too low, to protect the DMF. The car was also fitted with a very low first gear, aparently to facilitate pulling away without stalling. The clutch was quite sudden, too, which didn't help, but I've not driven a later model 1.8 TDCi.

The car still needed some revs to pull away, though, and surely 1400rpm is not an excessive engine speed to use in order to pull away cleanly? Bear in mind that turbodiesels tend to have lower compression ratios that naturally-aspirated diesels and so will develop less torque at very low revs, before the turbo starts to boost, and are thus easier to stall....

Good Evening everyone! This afternoon I was driving my Renault Scenic Megane Y Reg 1.9dci Dynamique when I heard a noise that I thought indicated a puncture. I was about 4-5ft away from a safe parking space and proceeded to stop but then heard grating type noises sounding like plastic being smashed and my car came to an abrupt halt and a loss of all electrics. I checked for loose battery connections etc and all seemed fine. On putting the key into the ignition all the pre-start lights came on but then nothing. After close inspection by the AA both my alternator belt and timing belt were sheared. My question is now I have been made aware that this could end up being a very costly repair - idoes anyone know whether there is enough clearance for the valves not to have been damaged? Any help would be much appreciated please.

Tweak to subject line to include the oft requested detail. "What are they ?"is the question you may be asking, dear reader. Well as it happens engine and year ask quite a difference to how things work from here on. "how do we know we need to put that detail in ?" you may ask - 'cos you're asked three times before posting that's how ! - PU

I am fortunate enough to be looking seriously at buying a new 5 series BMW 520d Touring to replace my lovely (but less capacious) Volvo S60 D5 S.

I have just noticed that BMW are currently offering 'Business Navigation' & a CD changer for just £350 complete for both (saving loads - £1,300), as a special offer.

Now I have a Tom Tom 1 Europe, that I stick to the windscreen as and when required (rarely) that I love, and has only once tried to drown me in a river (long story but tried to send me through a no through road crossing a raging torrent (I have a large ammount of common sense (seemingly unlike many people featured in the press publicising their stupidity when they carry on....) so no bad experience).

I really like the Tom Tom and looking at BM's literature the Standard 'Business Navigation' looks a bit poor, not seeming to show 3D images. And does it cover Europe (street level)?, that the Tom Tom does.

Basically what I am trying to establish is whether it is worth me arguing it's merit (I get the benefit of the 6 disc changer as well of course) with my boss and specifying this option, or am I better off sticking with the standard car (+ Bluetooth and met paint).

I will have the car for approx 120k miles / 4 years so will it's fitment add to the car's residual value?

At the end of the day does anyone have experience of this system? Is it any good?

Many thanks for your feedback, as ever.

Hi I am experiencing a problem with my Vectra and a week on the well know diagnostic franchise is unable to isolate problem.

Symptoms: Starts fine but absolutely no guts and won't rev beyond 1400rpm. Was hooked up to tech 2 and fault (hole) found in intercooler which was replaced. There was also fuel pressure fault code but this went after intercooler replaced.

Garage looked at EGR and said that it was sticking. New EGR due to be fitted today. My concern is if it turns out not to be EGR where we go from here.

Any advice/ info appreciated. Read more

I have just realised that two of my brake lights are not working, the high one in the middle top of my rear window works fine but the left and right ones are not working when I brake but they work fine as lights when not braking so I assume the bulbs are OK. Is this a common problem with this Ford? and is it easily(cheaply) fixed and likely to be a warranty exclusion as wear and tear ? ( I have two months warranty left). Thanks any suggestions

Glad you got it sorted (and saved some money by not having to pay someone to do it). Maybe the other one was just a loose connection.

I've been hunting around the classifieds quite a lot recently and i keep seeing some very strange looking adverts. The car in question is often suspiciously cheap - ie. a 2006 Focus or a 2004 Mini for £4,000. The seller always claims that his or her phone is out of action and that they are only contactable by email. Additionally, the same vehicle can appear in the classifieds in two separate adverts - in two entirely different locations.

Example is the Mini One D seen twice on this page:
