1999 (T) 1.6 GLX - clutch problem - escortgti
Hi All,

My wifes dad bought her a peugeot 206 last night to replace her 106, after taking it to my work today i noticed that the clutch is slipping slightly.

It only happens after i've just changed gear and give it full throttle, after a few minutes it settles down and drives fine and dosen't slip again until i change gear. the car has 94,000 miles on the clock so it s probably still the original clutch.

What would like to know is, does the clutch sound knackered to you guys or can you adjust them at all?

If i'm looking at a new clutch does any of you's know a rough time estimate or price for a garage to do a job like this?

Thanks very much in advance.

It's cable; so worth checking that there's still free lift in the pedal. Most probably why it was sold though....

Book time for the 8-valve is 3.3 hours. Parts will be £100-ish.

Thanks for getting back to me so quick screwloose, the car was bought at auction so probably is the reason for sale, everything else looks fine and its really good condition.

i suppose considering it was bought at a really good price 1k then fitting anew clutch isn't too bad. is the cable just beside the pedal? and is it just a case of tightning it?

I've a feeling that the cable is self-adjusting on those. If the pedal lifts, even a fraction, the cable is fine.

If the pedal is hard up; then the cable needs slacking-off a tad. Most probably too late though.

Try getting a few quotes from the clutch places and local independents. Avoid the generic free-fits - they'll find lots of "extras" that need doing.

You can still get a grand for those down the block...? Must've been a good night.

thanks for that i will check cable but i reckon its a new clutch it needs. i will ring round a few places tomorrow and see what prices there quoting, at least i have a rough idea of the time and price of parts involved.

Cheers

Hi screwloose

just checked the clutch pedal and it is hard up, where do i slacken it off and will that improve things?

Can't recall ever adjusting one; have a look for the adjuster. Don't hold your breath though; once they slip, it's usually too late.

I only have experience of Citroen BX and Xantia cable clutches. Peugot are similar. The cable goes through an arm mounted on the gearbox. On the far side of the arm, usually towards the front of the car, is a nut and locking arrangement. Undoing the nut gives more free-play at the pedal. It is worth a try but Screwloose is probably right, it may have been "cooked" by now.

I would suggest a forum search for 2 things,

1 Recommended garage in your area

2 Where not to take it. (fast fit clutch places etc)

I can recommend Mr. Clutch. Never had bad service from them and their prices are very competitive. Check out you local Yellow Pages for them.

One way to wake up the adjuster is to let the clutch pedal bang up a couple of times (no guarantee it won't break something of course...!) I'm with Screwloose that it's probably new clutch time. It shouldn't be too much if te book time is only 3 hours - £150-£200 labour, plus £100 parts should see it changed.

I would avoid the well known high street chain that might have plenty of problems, and may well only fit a new friction plate, and may well use 're-manufactured' clutches.....

thanks for that richard it is certainly worth a try but as you and screwloose say it is prob time for a new clutch, thats the prices im being quoted locally so that sounds about right.

do you recommend getting a genuine peugeot part? or does it matter as it wont be a dealer i'm putting it to.

also just out of intrest what does changing the clutch in the 206 involve? do you have to take the gear box out or drop the enigine?

If it's only 3 hours, the gearbox will come out the bottom. OE clutch should be c£100 from GSF / Eurocarparts
