In this thread you may ask any question for which you need help, advice, suggestions or whatever.
It does not need to be motoring related. In fact, in this thread it should not be.
No Questions About PCs. Please use the current "computer Related Questions" thread instead.
No politics
No Speeding, speed cameras, traffic calming
No arguments or slanging matches
Nothing which we think is not following the spirit of the thread
Nothing that risks the future of this site (please see the small print for details -

However, as has been said a couple of times, there is a wealth of knowledge in here, much of which is not motoring related, but most of which is useful.

I need to change the rear brake pads on my bro-in-law's C-Max but he was advised that ABS/ECU needs to be 'told' that new pads have been fitted.
Have worked on most systems but I don't have data for the C-Max especially as it has electric handbrake. I thought that systems where a computer has to be plugged in just to change pads was a rumour - but now I'm not so sure.
Anyone else heard similar or have changed rear pads on a C-Max?

Many thanks for responding mustangman.
I shall be changing the pads this weekend depending on weather.

Jaguar S-type 2.7 diesel 2004 (04 plate) {this bit now added to the subject header, as per the 3 separate requests you missed}
Intermittent fault with sensor for dynamic stability control (DSC) system. Warning light appears at random intervals (every few days) saying "DSC not available".
Local Jag dealer has investigated and says sensor is faulty but just the sensor cannot be replaced - the whole DSC unit needs replacing at a cost of £690!!
This seems excessive, but does of course include huge hourly rates for main dealership.
Am I being had over here? Could a local garage do it cheaper? Can the sensor be replaced on its own?

why not consult a Jag independent, far cheaper than main dealer and they have all the diagnostics
i can recommend one in Epping (J26 M25)...if any good to you, ask a Mod nicely to forward me an e-mail

Thanks Jacks, very comprehensive, I'll check it out.
I have just recntly bought a V50 2.0D . The manufactuers guide states I should be doing approx 45 mpg which is what I would expect on a 2.0 Diesel.
I filled the tank up to full and so far have done approx 170 miles to half a tank, and my own workings lead me to assume that I am getting about 30mpg?
Has any other V50 drivers come accross this issue?
Cheers Read more
How big is the tank? Maybe it's smaller than you think. Or maybe its design is such that it gets an air pocket in it and it can't be filled to its intended capacity? (sounds daft, but who knows?)
You definitely need to run it down as low as you dare and then fill it until it is spilling out of the orifice - then check how many litres you have put in and see if it matches the claimed capacity....
We have a Seat Altea with cooling system issues. It started leaking water at 38000 miles, the dealer replaced the water pump. It has continued to leak water for a few months and after fobbing about air locks they are now saying there is a fault with the thermostat causing overpressuring. This doesn?t make sense as the water leaks from the car when stationary as well as when it is running, even when left for a week.
No steam is visible when looking at the engine, the water appears to be coming from the engine and not the radiator or header tank. The coolant is not showing signs of head gasket failure.
The only clue is that when starting the car a gurgle can be heard from the heater matrix in the dash.
I am concerned that we are about to embark on funding the dealer replacing the cooling system bit by bit.
Can anyone offer any advice?
Many thanks,
Tim Roberts

To follow up in case anyone has the same problem in future:
The car starting dripping regularly yesterday and I managed to trace it to where the plastic coolant pipe connects to the cylinder head on the right had side of the engine.
I found a useful document www.mk5gli.com/downloads/2.0t.pdf which shows the cooling system on page 14 which helped understand where to look.
2 coolant leaks on a 3.5 year old car in 6 months. Not impressed.
Hi, I have a friend who has a problem with a Ford Mondeo 2002 2.0TDCI 130ps engine. The car appears to drive fine and pulls away with no problem. When you accelerate to approx 55mph in fifth gear then come come off the revs and sit with your foot barely touching the throttle at approx 1950 revs, the engine appears to become very lumpy, juddering infact, as if you were peppering the throttle. If you accelerate up to 2100 revs, the problem clears and it drives fine. It does this in any gear at around 1950 revs. I've heard people mention problems with flywheels, was wondering if this was a symptom or whether yhis is some kind of elctronic problem? I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but advise would be appreciated and perhaps some idea of cost to put it right.
Many thanks,
Andy Stu. Read more
A friend of mine was experiencing the a similar problem with a Peugeot 307 and that turned out to be the DMF, I think they must develop a bit of slop which allows movement when no under load.
I am considering a vw passat diesel and just wondered if they are fully galvanised also whether to consider a skoda and same question applies

659 it was a passat highline model on a 54 plate ,if it had been grey I would have bought it. I have been looking but no reasonable milage skodas within 100 miles to be found at a keen price
rtj70,looking at 54/05 passat or skoda up to £10k but being a true scotsman want to spend a bit less and thought maybe something with around 60k miles which has just had a new timing belt service ,is that when it would be done ?
