Hi all

When my car is cold I sometimes have erratic engine idling followed by Engine stall. If I identify this intermittent problem before it happens I can apply some revs and stop it happening. But this isn't a solution as I actually need my right foot to brake sometimes!

The car had a similar problem last year which was eventually narrowed down to a Cam Sensor problem, I think this is totally different though.
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=52718&...e

I have had this problem for abour 6 weeks now, it seems to happen at least once a fortnight and only before the engine us up to temperature. Today I realised that I can reproduce the problem on demand. When the engine is cold and idling, if I dab the accelerator and remove my foot instantly rather than smoothly it enters this failure state. The engine goes into a state where it sounds rough as hell and eventually dies.

Any ideas? There are no fault codes in the system!

Thanks!

I had a bad case of rough idle on my bmw 318 ci. Had it in the garage 3 times and each time they told me they had done something different. O2 sensor, vacuum hoses, crankcase breather pipe. None of them fixed it. I changed the vanos solenoids after doing a bit of homework, cured. Like a different car. And yes, I have changed garage.

Advice needed on changing gearbox oil (manual) on stated car.

I take it there is a drain plug and a filler plug.....anyone know the location of these?

Also what type of oil to use(am guessing at fully synth) and box capacity?

Thanks in advance! Read more

Being careful not to overfill it as this can cause severe damage as in 6 speed renault and nissan boxes where overfilling can be pretty fatal they use auto fluid by the way.If there is no drain plug its pretty much telling you don't try and drain.

Hi everyone, i am looking to buy either a new Kia Ceed or Hyundai i30, and would appreciate any advice on which you think is best, in respect of build quality, likely reliability and dealer service etc. It will almost certainly be a petrol, and i will probably only be keeping it for 3 years, so the extra 2 year warranty on the Kia wont make any difference to me !

Rather vague subject line filled out with a little more detail. Read more

Sorry, that is my fault. I have just pasted the wrong link. But the site allows to compare whatever you want cars.

Still way too late for op though!

Just bought an 07 plate corsa 1.7cdti and so far been unimpressed with fuel economy. Used to have old style 1.2 petrol corsa which gave a range of approx. 400 miles to a tank.

New corsa, diesel!, is averaging 440 tops, way short of the 582 quoted in the press figures etc.

I know these are'nt realistic but surely I should be getting nearer 500 than I am.

I drive 60 miles round trip a day tho in the mornings its very stop start and evenings can be same. But I did same journey in petrol car!

I read somewhere Vauxhall have an issue with these diesels and they need a re-map. Can anyone confirm before I approach my dealer. Don't want to look stupid. Read more

This is really interesting reading. The overall message is that the fuel economy improves as you gain mileage presumably to an optimum after which it declines. Well i've had an early 2007 90bhp Corsa CDTI for 18 months now. It currently has 44,800 miles showing, and i have to say the fuel economy is atrocious! I've racked my brains, tried various fuel additives, removed all extraneous weight from the car etc. I even thought it could be due to the metal disc underneath the fuel cap breaking off and falling into the tank due to me stupidly trying to re-fuel the car from the wrong side (perhaps that may be the answer after all). I drive mostly in urban areas, and try to use shifting gears down instead of braking. I recently filled the tank completely and can safely predict that it will manage a paltry 400 miles from 45 litres. I may as well have bought a Fiat Panda or Suzuki Alto petrol model which would probably beat that. Before anyone chimes in, i've noticed that there really isn't a noticeable difference outside of urban areas. I'm going on holiday soon using it to tow a trailer tent which me and my wallet are dreading. I don't think i will have a Vauxhall for my next car since i don't believe their fuel figures hype.

when you get an advisory at an MOT does that mean " get it put right or will fail it next time round" do MOT stations always look up your " previous " before they carry out your current MOT? reason i asked my misses motor will need an MOT in may and it has an advisory for corroded brake lines so i want to get them done pronto ....cheers Read more

I went to a local garage three years ago for an MOT. It failed on a split CV boot.
Various advisories like cracking other boot, brake pipes in poor condition and low brake fluid level. Car had been recently serviced by a main VW dealer so I was sceptical. Got the one gaiter replaced at £70 or so all in with the MOT.

Other gaiter was not done until 3 years later. Brake pipes were not mentioned at subsequent services or MOTs. And brake fluid was bang on the max. mark, which made me really suspicious.
I went to a different garage after that.

Hi,

I've recently bought a Focus 1.8 Tdci 115bhp from a Ford dealer. I'm a bit disappointed by its fuel consumption as I'm only getting about 48mpg from it whereas I thought that this car is supposed to do about 53mpg. This is about 540 miles on a full tank if I leave it as long as poss until the fuel needle really isn't moving.

I have replaced the air filter with a K&N replacement filter (not induction kit) as the dealer appeared to have failed to replace the filter when they serviced it (black as the ace of spades!), but this has not improved the consumption. I have also once or twice red-lined it to try and clear its throat (not sure whether this still applies as older diesels used to get a bit sooted up if not revved occaisonally).

I'm reasonably enthusiastic driving it but I drive approx 30miles to work and back each way so its not short journeys. Is this the sort of consumption to expect? What do other people get out of theirs? I'm a bit cheesed off about this as my previous car - a Pug 306hdi estate which was a much heavier car but with slightly bigger 2L engine but only 90bhp and with better low speed torque used to do a regular 50mpg no matter how I drove it.

I have vaguely wondered whether after 70,000 miles its advisable to run some injector cleaner through it - I am also extremely aware from other forums (veg oil, doh!) that these injectors aint cheap! Can anyone advise?

Another thing I have vaguely wondered about but wouldn't really consider without making very, very sure, is an ECU remap - does anyone have any experiences??. I can see that the benefits of tailoring the ECU settings to get the best performance/economy but also a bit concerned about possible side affects.

thanks

2002 Zafira 2.0 dti - vauxhall have diagnosed main fuel injector pump / control unit needs replacing. Is there any alternative to using vauxhall main dealer for this? can find supplier of replacement unit but local garage advises could fit but would need vauxhall official dealer to programme the unit and probably the immobiliser also. Is this the case? if so then it would appear that Vauxhall have an unfair monopoly and can pretty well charge what they want for replacement unit and labour. As refurbished units are available to purchase then is there any benefit in having the existing unit removed & refurbished as this would suggest to me no need to programme. If this is a viable option then any suggestions who might undertake this task would be welcome. Many thanks, cheers John. Read more

Hi All,

I wondered whether anyone could shed some light on a diesel Focus 2001 1.8 TDCI - I'm unfamiliar with diesel engines, so I'd like to know whether the cambelt changes are similar to petrol models - does anyone know the mileage at which this should be done (I looked at a 1.6 Zetec a few weeks ago and this wasn't to be changed for 100k miles). The car we're looking at has 57k miles, am not sure whether the cambelt has been changed already. What kind of mileage is this engine capable of? In terms of servicing costs, what is the norm for an annual service on this model?

The car is tidy and seems to have been looked after, just wondered if there is anything especially to look for on this model?

Many thanks

TDCI belts don't fail but its not uncommon for the tensioners to fail before 100K, and the result is the same, expensive!! Fuel pumps can fail and expensive but so too are the pumps on the TDDI. With the TDCI its the injectors that are more likely to fail, and can't be ultrasonically cleaned as the have solenoids in them. I read a quote somewhere that injectors are about £200 + £100 to recalibrate to the ECU, although I have not been quoted this directly and I did'nt quite undersatnd the excessive cost to recalibrate. I test drove a TDDI and thought it was fine, mind you I was upgrading from a 306 td so anything would be luxury :-)

I really need some help from people who know about Ford Mondeo diesel engines.
I have a 2005 Mondeo on which the warranty runs out in March.
The car has had a new fuel pump under warranty.
Sometimes the car still runs badly and goes into limp mode.
The car has been at the dealer and they have tried to recode an injector but say that this has failed and a new injector will need to be fitted.
They will do this under warranty this time, but if another one is needed after March then I will have to pay. The cost would be £500.
Should they fit four new injectors? Why cant the present one be recoded?
How long/many miles should injectors last? I dont want to keep the car if it may require three more injectors @ £1500!! just out of warranty.
The car has 54k on the clock. Mine from new. FSH. Read more

Vectra 2.2 direct petrol 56/07 - advice please. It is technical question but is related really to a buying decision rather than solving a technical problem, hence the question is appearing on this side of the forum.

I am posting on behalf of a friend who is considering buying a one/two year old Vectra 2.2 direct petrol engine car.
I have told him of the few issues mentioned on HJ's car-by-car. The problems listed by HJ are
1. Ignition control unit of 2.2 petrol engine is prone to burning out.
2. Seems to be a problem with clutch pedal return springs (which can contribute to a burned out clutch).
3. Several complaints of "creaking from front suspension", later identified as loose radiator mounts.
4. 2.2 16v petrol engine has been known to snap its timing chain due to the lubrication jet becoming blocked, ..... Vauxhall Z22SE 2.2 litre engine was modified from March 2002, engine number 11065400, to overcome the timing chain lubrication problem.

Does any one here know whether any of the above issues would apply to the 56/07 year models, and in particular whether anyone has come across the chain snap problem has been cured or whether it has continued on the modified and supposedly "problem-cured" engines made since March 2002.

Many thanks for any information/experience of the above engine/car that you might be able to pass on.

That's a standard line from all manufacturers when they cock up - it's straight from the Sir Humphrey book of excuses.

"Although a few isolated cars [all of them] may have had [did have] these problems; this fault has now been [ignored as a good workshop earner] completely sorted in cars built after ......... [no it hasn't!] All claims have been fully met under our extremely generous warranty [once we lost the court case] and did we mention that it was only an isolated problem anyway......"

I can think of glaring examples of this strategy from Nissan; Mazda; Nissan; Peugeot/Citroen; Nissan; Ford; Nissan; Vauxhall; Nissan; oh did I mention Nissan...?
