for a while now my partners car has been quite damp in the passenger footwell. Obviously this has become worse this winter. We have dried it out as best we can and then got the hose pipe out but cant find where it is coming from. It seems to be wet under the bulk head towards the left hand side

We were wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Is it possible that a seal around the windscreen may be leaking and running into the footwell as we are planning on replacing the screen in the next few weeks

Hello all. I have just bought a ford focus sport 1.6. 06 plate. I have two questions well maybe three.

Firstly does anyone know if it is a Zetec engine? I assume so.

Secondly does it have sports suspension. I asked the guy but he gave me a very generic answer.

Thirdly anyone got one? Views, opinions and such?

Thanks everyone. Read more

Sport is (or was) a good spec shoice - doesn't cost much more than an LX but got lots of desirable equipment :

Fuel computer
Colour coded door handles and boot handle and mirrors (on later models only)
16" Alloy wheels
Front fog-lights
Leather 3 spoke steering wheel
other irrelevant garnish (chrome instrument surrounds, couple of extra speakers, etc)

Zetec gains sport suspension and dark headlights (if you know what I mean), different (but same size) alloy wheels, alarm and sportier seats. The suspension is useful if you like hard driving, but other than that not really worth the price permium.

My heater/air-con comes on full blast every time the engine is on. Can't seem to turn it off. The circular switch doesn't seem to work. Both heater and air con are certainly working, the car is as warm as toast or cool as ice, but I can' t seem to get them to stop!! Any ideas? Read more

Could be the resistor pack. Do a search, its a common issue.

do automatic number plate readers check ALL of a vehicles documentation ? reason i asked a mate of mine is still driving around in his car ( taxed and insured) but the MOT has ran out and he thinks he,s ok , but i did warn him that he may be taking an awful gamble ...is he going to automatically get "nicked "when he passes a ANPR CAMERA ? thanks Read more

"The police told him off for keeping his documents in the car, particulary the V5!"
Don't normally have to produce the V5 except when selling it. And when travelling abroad, of course, as other countries insist on all documents being carried. Oh but then they have ID cards and we don't. Which in turn means....
It strikes me that if the system is so clever, instead of the police asking us for insurance details when stopped, we should be asking them!
Imagine this exchange at a motorway service area:
"Excuse me, constable, if you've got a minute, I wonder if you could have a quick look and tell me when my insurance comes up for renewal. I thought it was the 12th, but my wife swears it's the 9th..."

Hi,
I went to change the fuel filter on my 406 hdi 2.0 110 and in the haynes book it says that there is a drain screw on the front of the filter housing but when I looked at mine it isn't there?

There is a hole with a female thread there but no screw inside it?

I'm confused. If theres no drain screw in there, does that mean i'm losing fuel or just that they stopped putting drain screws on them? The car is a 53 plate.

I'm scared to go any further until I know what i'm doing!

Those pipe connectors on the top look a bit awkward to get off as well?

Thanks for any help anyone

Change the filter housing everytime a fuel filter needs changing ???? no way, I've been changing fuel filters since the HDI 1st ever came out with no problems ever, just leave the outlet pipe from filter off and switch ignition on ( Bosch system ) to flush out before you connect the outlet pipe

I've just had my car serviced by one of the major chains.
Being the suspicous type, I've tried to check the work charged for.
So I've had a look around the engine expecting to see a nice new clean screw-on type oil filter. I even resorted to removing the undertray and looking from underneath.
Strangly I cannot see anything resembling a filter.

Now I'm old enough to remember opening a bonnet and seeing the ground around the engine, ( eg. Morris Minor ) and seeing the few ancillaries easily. On a modern engine it's much harder to see of course, but could some kind person explain where the filter is and if it is possible to check if it's been replaced.

Many thanks if you can help.

It took me a while to find this too. A related question, has anyone ever changed the air filter on a Focus 1.6 TDCI?

I assume it's the oblong black box at the front right of the engine bay?

Halfords don't seem to stock a suitable filter (or at least their flip book in the store isle doesn't list one).

I'm interested to hear people's views on this. Thanks

Hi everyone, Happy new year. I have started to change the cambelt on my daughters car, but when i tried to undo the crankshaft pulley, it's very tight. The haynes manual shows a pulley with tapped holes in so you can bolt apiece of flat steel on and hold the pulley while you undo the crankshaft bolt. But my one doesn't have any tapped holes only three slots. This makes very difficult to hold.Is it possible to put the car in gear with the brakes on and try to undo the bolt this way without turning the crankshaft. This will also apply when refixing the pulley onto the shaft . I hope the pulley comes off easily because there isn't much room for a puller. Why didn't they just put a keyslot in the crankshaft like the old cars. Thanks in advance sparky 100.

sorry guys i am new to this forum and this is probably well outdated..

but... i recently changed a bottom end on this engine and it was a pig.. you can undo the bottom pully without an air gun but it is a 2 man job to be fair.. i had a friend of mine hold a chisel in the fly wheel where the starter moter went and pushed a bar with another extension on that with my feet and it cracked.. the problem is getting that pully up tight enough as it is just held on with pressure no woodruff key.. if you do not get that done up tight enough you will end up with bent valves as the crank will spin and the cams will not.. and i advise investing or hiring the timing pin and bar..

all the best

Hi,
The battery in my Golf 1.6 went flat - the car had been standing for about 4 weeks unused. Since the battery is a pain to remove, I'm recharging it in-situ, but that means only in 6 hour shifts when there is daylight! Odd thing - although otherwise disconnected, when I went to charge the battery again today (first charge yesterday pm), the meter was reading lower i.e. the battery had lost charge overnight. It isn't connected to anything - does this mean the battery is US? Read more

keep the heap going

A trick to tell where your current drain could be, is to connect a bulb between the negative pole and the car body and it should light up. If its pretty bright, then pull the fuses one by one until the light dims right down or goes out. (this assumes the alarm system is not running and the radio is not on). Look on the fuse diagram which tells you which appliances are on that circuit, then look for the short. Aston Martins used to flatten their batteries because of a faulty boot light switch.
I know there is loads of expertise on batteries here, but if its more than 2 or 3 years old, leaving the car for weeks at a time will probably kill it. You can revive them when they are flat if you trickle charge, but the prognosis is usually not great. If a car is run every day, a battery can last up to 12 years apparently. The older they get, the less well they hold the charge. I have a couple of spare batteries and the newer one loses very little current in 3 months, whilst the 10-year old one loses about 40% (roughly).

One For Sorrow

Hello all.

I have a Terrano 2 SWB 2.7TD which to be fair has given me quite a few years trouble free motoring. However..........

The other day the battery was flat, I put this down to the cobination of cold, lack of use over the Xmas period and short journeys over the last couple of weeks. Normally I do around a thousand miles a week.

Anyway, I put the battery on charge last night and this morning it was still low. I'm sure the battery is ok, its a heavy duty battery which is only 6 months old!

This is what happened next.

I called out the AA home start service. The mechanic told me that the battery was fine and that the alternator was to blame. He did perform a lot of checks to his credit and said that the alternator was only delivering around 12.6v to the battery which he told me wasnt enough.

The curious thing is though, the battery light on the dash doesnt come on at all. If I turn on the ignition but dont start it you would normally have the battery light lit up until i fire up the engine, then it would go off. problem is, it doesnt light up at all. I have removed the dash and checked the offending bulb bu it seems to be ok so there is no power getting to the bulb either. This makes me wonder if its something other than the alternator like a broken relay maybe?

All the fuses (according to the AA man) are ok so thats not the reason the battery light isnt lighting up.

Anyone come across anything like this before or have any ideas?

Cheers, Chris Read more

Hey, just an update!
Did you hear the one about the Terrano with a charging problem?
Just fix it by replacing the thermostat!
Seriously - check your temperature gauge does it take ages for the needle to barely get off cold? (and is the heater useless?)
The needle should get to just below half way in 2 or 3 minutes.
If the thermostat is stuck open, then the engine does not get up to temperature.
The glow plug control senses the engine temperature is cold, so the glow plugs stay on for an extended period of time (sometimes 10 to 15 minutes) - short trips particularly in winter, with more headlight driving - the alternator can't keep up with the current being drawn off and from time to time you will end up with a flat battery!
A thermostat is cheap, and easy to replace (three bolts and about a half litre of coolant - I pumped the coolant from the top of the radiator, and didn't spill a drop when the thermostat housing was removed).
Sure enough, as the engine temperature reached about 50C, the glow plugs turned off.
