Hello.
Thinking of trading in our 2004 Scenic 1.9dci as we no longer need the space.
We have been reasonably happy with the car, a few rattles and electrical problems aside.
We are looking at a demonstrator Megane two door with the 1.6 petrol engine.
Any views on economy, reliability of the engine, ease of service etc?
Many thanks

I'm having trouble a getting my BMW 318 M10 to idle properly.
When it's warm the engine hunts, like it cannot find its medium. I have recently had the motor overhauled and the mechanic who took it apart did not take note of where the vacuum pipes went thus I'm unable to drive the car until I can resolve this problem as too little REVS causes the car to cut out when approaching traffic lights, etc. Just to mention, the two jets on the very top of the carb do not seem to be working correctly as no fuel seems to ever come out of them. I'm not sure if this is a result of the vacuum pipes not being in their correct positions. Just for a description, it has a big white electric module on the left side if you are standing over the cylinder head on the drivers side. Is it possible you have a diagram of this carburettor that can possibly enable me to return these vacuum pipes to their correct positions? I believe the carb is a Pierburg 2B4 model if I'm not mistaken. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hmm...
Does the choke plate fully open as the engine warms up?
Only one of the heater-blower speeds on my Nissan Micra is working.
According to the manual wiring diagram there are 'heater-blower resistors'. Is it likely that these need replacing or is it more probable to be just the switch?
Thanks.

We are the new owners of a 2003 130 TDi PD passat estate. The car was with one owner on lease from LLoyds and was put on the long service program now at 112k, we asked the dealer what oil was used in the last service? and his answer was 'I always use 10W40 semi synth on these cars.
I read here and on the VW official bulletin that the standard is a PD approved 5W40 and not the above, would the fact that the dealer used it with 10W40 can do any harm? or should we change the oil now to 5W40 before we start driving it?
The oil was changed a week ago as the dealer serviced the car before the sale. We expect to do about 13K miles/year with this car so should we change the oil say every 10k instead of the long service? (which I understand is the standard for corporate drivers piling up large milage in short period). Read more
They designed the PD as genuine advances in fuel economy, power and emissions could be obtained. Having one "grade" could cause design to stagnate, as well as having to change the oil unnecessarily often. Even the Americans change the formulations: API SM is the latest for petrol, but still a generic rather than engine makers standard. www.api.org/certifications/engineoil/categories/up...f
I am considering buying a V70 with the following spec: VOLVO V70 2.4 D5 SE, 133000 miles, lots of extras including Sat Nav, TV, leather seats, 7 seats. Full service history. Price is £8,450 from an independent trader.
This seems good value to me, despite the high miles. Any views on this? Any particular issues I should look out for with such high miles?
Thanks. Read more
I looked at an ex-police car once.
It was a shed. The trim was a mess, door seals ruined, seats a mess - presume the handcuffs etc must have done that.
holes in the dash, holes in the roof badly repaired, obviously overheated at some point from the brown sludge all over the engine bay, gearbox felt sloppy, engine didnt feel great, suspension wallowed (bmw 530 btw)
How do travellers register their vehicles with the DVLA?
To get a V5, or even a driving licence, you need a permanent address.
And what about insurance? Read more
but swiftly degenerated into....
And therefore - LOCKED.
Besides which, the original question "How do travellers register their vehicles with the DVLA?" has been answered.

Are there any particular things to look out for if I am thinking about buying a Cat C or D Cars.
What is the difference between Cat C & D?

Glad you came in, even if late. Is it feasible, and economical, for an ordinary bloke to buy a 'less damaged car' and have it repaired by small garages and workshops? How does one go about it?
Hi, am hoping someone can help me out.
I've just had a local garage change the clutch on my 306. When they reconnected the battery the immobiliser keypad has both the red and green lights on solidly. The battery was disconnected for over 12 hours - if that is relevant.
Is there any way to reset it or could it have defaulted back to the factory code?
Has anybody seen this before? My code doesn't work.

Hi, my peugeot 306 BERLINA 5 DOOR 1.8 i 8v 103 CVA 4, won't start. In the workshop, they've tried to scan the ecu with no success. I've found info about reseting the inertia switch, checking earth, etc. the double relay wont stop sending gas to the injectors. The red and green lights on the keypad are both on. The check engine sign is on. the car wont start at all. there is no spark coming from the wires, I've taken one and then another one, and no spark comes from them.
Does anyone know where I can get some reliable comparison sizes?
Here's the quandry - we are looking at buying a second car. the sticking point point is that it mustn't be any wider than our current Ford Focus due to restrictions in parking - i.e. down the side of our house.
OK, so Parkers seem to have extensive facts and figures for every car on the road but i need to verfiy these - they give the dimensions of the Mk1 Focus as 1998mm wide (I'm assuming this includes mirrors) - and for the Octavia (which we are considering) Parkers suggests a range of widths from 1720mm to 1979mm - all of which are apparently less than a Focus... I'm not sure if I believe this as the Skoda 'seems' bigger.
Any suggestions? Or can anyone vouch that a 2000 plate Octavia GLX is no wider than a Ford Focus?
Cheers

Search through the car reviews and at the least the full test pdf should give you the answer. Parker's sounds like with and without mirrors.
What's the best diesel car one could get for under £1000? The only requirements are reliability and economy. I'm not fussed about the size, badge etc.. as long as it won't give me any troubles and would be fairly economical. It'll be used purely for 80 miles round trip commuting. Thank you Read more
Would add another endorsement of the plain vanilla XUD.
Ran a BX over around 120k miles from 93 to 05. Family car until 2000 ranging annually as far as the Western Isles and Auvergne. Final five years as hack/backup. Only engine related issues were glow plugs and a split fuel line.
Steering rack wear and impending corrosion did for it in the end.
Oh dear! We were just thinking of changing our Peugeot 206cc for a year old Megane CC and were wondering whether to go for the 1.6 petrol or the 1.5 diesel. Then we read this lot.
Has rather put us off. The Pug has been perfect with no problems at all and is just 3 years old. Would we be better to keep that for a while longer?
