January 2008
In November I noticed that my 2007 Impreza 2.0r (160ps model) was flat spotting a bit when accelerating from below 2000rpm. I took it to the dealer and they said that there were no fault codes, nothing wrong with the car, and so they just 'reset the ECU' and gave it back to me 10mins later. Strangely enough it seemed to drive better and I thought no more about it.
Over Christmas and New Year I noticed it flat spotting again and so called the dealer. Fortunately they had an engineer from Subaru UK visiting and they told me to take the car straight down to them so he could take a look at it.
He told me that there is a 'remap' available from Subaru for these cars to improve performance and responsiveness. He downloaded the new software into the ECU (took about 30mins). The flat spotting has completely gone and low speed torque and acceleration from below 2500rpm is much improved. Well worth the trouble of going to your dealer if you have one of these cars.
I imagine this would apply to all 2.0 160ps engines (as used in the Impreza, Legacy, Forester since late 2005 I think).
He also mentioned that being high compression engines (11:1) there is a power benefit from running higher octane petrol if you wish, the engine management is designed to take advantage of it. Read more
I am looking at buying a C Class Merc and have been told that they need to be serviced every 9000 miles
Is this correct Read more
Not that I have any vested interest, but if you keep up the servicing with MB you get to benefit from Mobilo life.
Does anybody know what the fuel tank capacity is on a 1996 Nissan Micra?
According to the Haynes manual its 42 litres but I can never get more than about 30 litres of petrol in, even when the fuel gauge is on red. Read more
42 litres according to a contemporary AA data sheet in their on-line archive of tests.
I am considering replacing my Vectra with an Astra, but I will miss cruise control. I know the Elite version comes with cruise control as standard, but I am not keen on having leather seats. I am happy to have a lesser model, but the depreciation from new on an Astra is huge so I don't want to buy a new model just to get this feature fitted; I am looking at something around a year old. I am also not that keen on the aftermarket cruise control systems - no real reason except I would like to have the controls not look like an after thought.
Is it possible to retrofit (ie change the indicator stalk etc..) cruise control to this model of Astra? I have seen forums describe how to do this with the previous version, but not the current model.
Plus, I am not that technically inclined, so would I be able to go and ask my local vauxhall dealer to fit it for me?
Thank you in advance for any help! Read more

Petrol or diesel?...
I have recently purchased a '52' Plate Mondeo 2.0 TDCi with 57k on the clock. I want to keep this car for a good few years so want to ensure I keep the engine in the best condition possible. I do about 15,000 miles per year. The service interval is 12,500 miles, but would you recommend an oil change between services? Would this make any real difference? Read more

Hello, I am new to this forum but I have joined as I am having a problem with my car. My ABS and Brake Fluid light randomly flash up very occasionally whilst driving. I have checked the basics like brake fluid, pads etc. Another problem which is connected with the ABS light is that it doesn't illuminate when the ignition is first turned on. The actual ABS works as it should as I have had it operating off the public roads and it works fine. I have had the problem looked at a Ford dealer and they have said that there are no stored previous faults or current fault codes present. My concern is that come MOT time in March it will fail due to the ABS light not coming on and going out when the ignition is turned on. Can anyone please advise me what it could be or if anyone has experienced this problem before. The car is an 04 plate with 80k miles.
Many thanks,

Well iv been there could'nt get light off i had the car in garage and they cleared the code so no light on . I picked car up as soon as i drove 1 meter light on so they did it again and it did the same got money back as all they was doing was clearing the ECU of the coad not fixing the problem or looking for it as it took them all of 5min to come back to me and say all done. I got home and had a look at the abs sencor un pluged wires and brass connection was green so when around clead them all and YES IT FIXED IT . Then month or so later did it again checked ABS fluid, all wirers , hub as this is were the ABS ring is clean the dirt way . NO LUCK. So book it in ford they found a loos wire sorted £54. happy days . No a few weeks later come on again so back to ford found a wire that had rubbed right back to the bear copper £75 for new sensor plus £54 diagnostic . I got a set of 4 and did it my self as was cheper ford say light will go off when all done as no more code in ECU . So did all this then drove car 5 miles light still on so ford had car back as they say must be more wrong week later i go a call £360 for new wheel bearing year later 8/1/2016 light back on toped up with ABS fluid and so far so good .
Hi, I know nothing about cars so any help much appreciated!!!
I have an S reg peugout 306 which won't start..... the diagnostics thing doesn't work so the garage can't tell what's wrong with it from that....
It had a reconditioned ECU (ECI?) unit fitted about a year ago when the car broke down with the previous owner (a friend!)
The garage it's in reckon the only thing I can do is try another ECU unit.. but there's no guarantee this will work, or how long for....
As I know nothing about cars, or garages, I'm wondering if anyone on this forum can help with any other solutions to try?!!
thanks! Read more
hi guys and girls
i bought a 306 1999 1.6 8v merdian special edtion the other day cheap...
Got a call from SWMBO as I was leaving work this evening that made my blood run cold.
The car's showing a yellow "Service" light and shows "CHECK INJECTION" on the trip computer display, but it seems to be running OK. What should I do?
I thought about replying with something along the lines of a gallon of unleaded and a lighter, but instead said to pull over and turn the engine off, wait a few seconds and restart. She did. Lo and behold, light is out, message has gone. She drove it 30 miles home and it was fine.
I left it to get properly cold, and went out to it half an hour ago. The car fires up as normal, but there's a yellow "SERVICE" light and "CHECK INJECTION" message again. I switch off after a few seconds and switch back on. The light and message reappear. Idle is perfect, and as I drive up the road, the engine is pulling fine. After half a mile and hence a slightly warm engine, I pull over, switch off and switch on again. Message gone. Drive for a few miles, with a few more offs and ons. Message does not reoccur. I'm willing to bet it's back on tomorrow morning's cold start though.
I am guessing this is a glowplug fault. Car has done 47k which seems to be about the going rate based on what I've read. Is it just a case of bunging in a set of Berus and all being well, or is there anything else I have to consider?
As I said, there's no indication there's anything untoward. No misfires, still smooth, and it still pulls like a train
Cheers

Hi, picked up this thread while investigating the same warning indicator on my wifes Scenic. This and following discussion answers all my initial questions, however, I am curious about the instruction to change the glow plugs when the engine is hot, could you explain a little further please why this is necesary. Thanks.
I have never been in the cab of a lorry [well once I was when my previous car had to be towed, but it had 5-speed gears like cars].
I heard that most big lorries have 5 - 16 gears! I like to know how do the drivers operate those gears. I don't even know whether big articulated lorries are manual or automatic.
I've seen some buses are automatic. Do buses and lorries have same engine & transmission?

>>>>>all of which has made them 2-3 mpg WORSE than the 4 year old mega-mileage trucks they replaced. across the fleet, this is an extra £100,000 a month in fuel costs ALONE.Its the usual thing, the fleet manager is not a HGV driver, and never thinks to ask the people who actually DRIVE them what would be best!!
what's wrong with fitting a gearstick that the driver actually moves himself?<<<<<
I actually did ask that question of my Boss because I used to return average 8.49MPG on a manual and since I've had the auto on the Scania it's dropped to an average of 7.65MPG.
His answer was that over a fleet of 65 drivers there are more bad ones ( fuel consumption wise) than good ones by far and where it pulls the good ones down it considerably raises the bad ones up so making it far easier to project outlay on fuel and therefore quote for contracts.
I preferred a manual and hate to hear the noises tha autobox makes when it's revving away like mad.
And I agree with most of the posters on here, the old crash boxes were the best ones!

Sorry Misar, I should have made my statement clear. Replace high quality unleaded for branded image petrol - stuff it, let's not beat about the bush here, I use shell or texaco petrol instead of the usual supermarket ones. I also use applegreen's (they're Irish with quite a few chains in the UK) 98 octane petrol. My scooby doesn't like applegreen's 95 ron unleaded. Neither does my brothers 2009 Mazda 6 2.0 petrol. In fact that's just as sensitive to petrol as my Subaru!
As for fuel economy, I must just be heavy footed therefore recently, I tend to leave the aircon on auto.
