It's a belt.

HJ's CBC says :-
1.6L chain-cam Duratec 100PS, Euro 3&4, 161g/km CO2, 42.2mpg combined, 111mph, 0-60 11.6 secs.

Hmm; FYDA to FYDD 100PS Zetec up to '05; all belt-driven. [Focus Mk I]
HWDA 100PS 74Kw Duratec '05-on; also cam-belt in all data sources. Only the Duratec-HE is shown with a chain.

I suppose it not be hard to look under the bonnet for a difinitive answer.

For the answer, see here on this site:
www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=686
There are 2 1.6 petrol engines listed: normally identified as '100PS' and '115PS' (this seems to be the way the dealers list cars - they can't be bothered with all this Ti-VCT stuff)
1.6L chain-cam Duratec 100PS, Euro 3&4, 161g/km CO2, 42.2mpg combined, 111mph, 0-60 11.6 secs.
1.6L belt-cam Duratec Ti-VCT (variable valve timing) 115PS, Euro 4, 155g/km, 43.8mpg combined, 117mph, 0-60 10.5 secs
Note: the more powerful engine is more economical.
New question: Anyone know when you're supposed to change the belt on the 115PS engine?

42.2 mpg !! i have a 2006 1.6 ghia with only 8000 miles on the clock and only get about 26 mpg arround town and 40 on the motorway. ive only had the car 3 weeks and beginning to wish i had not bothered with another focus after having a 1.8 focus for 5 years which returned 32 on average.
