(99-04) 2.0 HDi 110 - fuel filter renewal - markj2210
Hi,
I went to change the fuel filter on my 406 hdi 2.0 110 and in the haynes book it says that there is a drain screw on the front of the filter housing but when I looked at mine it isn't there?

There is a hole with a female thread there but no screw inside it?

I'm confused. If theres no drain screw in there, does that mean i'm losing fuel or just that they stopped putting drain screws on them? The car is a 53 plate.

I'm scared to go any further until I know what i'm doing!

Those pipe connectors on the top look a bit awkward to get off as well?

Thanks for any help anyone

Mark

Some have water sensors - some haven't.

Buy the whole complete filter housing from the dealers - nowhere else - and just remove those squeeze-and-slide quick-release hoses and lift the whole thing out. [If you've got a water sensor, unplug the wire.]

DO NOT open the housing and replace the element; damage to the high-pressure pump becomes very likely if you do. [Nothing serious - only £2500-ish...]

Frankly; common-rail systems are no place for the uninitiated to tread - take it to a diesel specialist for preference.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Now i'm really worried!

I rang Peugeot this afternoon and they said that because its a newer 406 it has a seimens filter housing and that they don't have a drain screw. Instead, they have a white cap on the bottom that just screws off to drain the fuel out of the housing.

Seemed simple enough so I took my time and had a go. It went fine and I have started her up which took approx 30 secs and thats it.

I'm scared I might have done something now by changing the filter element. It does say in the haynes book that it should be done every 24000 miles tho. (and its only got one spanner difficulty for this). Only other spanner is me! ha ha

Anyway I can tell if its ok?

Thanks

Mark

The filter system is so badly designed, that there is a high risk of contamination if the element only is changed.

Because frag getting across the filter from things like tank-pump failure trashed so many high-pressure pumps, in-service experience showed the smart move is to change the whole unit.

HDi's can have either Bosch or Siemens systems. Only the Bosch have tank-pumps - and then only some of the latest ones, even if they have pump relays and live wiring right into the tank - but no pump.

Thats really useful info Screwloose,

I was thinking about these plastic housing diesel filters (in general) and how it must be almost impossible to take one apart and put an element in, without getting some of the outer surface road grime inside from the hands.

Does the same apply to the plastic housing of my 2005 Mk2B Fiat Punto, 1.3 Multijet, regarding swarf?

Regards

Sorry; never done one - there are very few Fiats round here.

If it's an open-ended tubular filter that can drop all the frag into the housing like an HDi one, then maybe yes.

I would have hoped that Fiat would have learned from PSA's mistake.

Thanks for the info.

I'll buy the whole housing next time. If I havn't already done any damage. Are there any syptoms I should look out for?

Could I have been lucky?

Most of the common-rail cars on the road have had their filters changed that way - it's the size of the risk, not the [very low] percentage chance that suggests a bit of caution.

Point taken.

I think its about £50 for the whole unit so not so bad.

Was gonna chage the coolant next week, i'm scared now. ha ha

Change the filter housing everytime a fuel filter needs changing ???? no way, I've been changing fuel filters since the HDI 1st ever came out with no problems ever, just leave the outlet pipe from filter off and switch ignition on ( Bosch system ) to flush out before you connect the outlet pipe
