I've got a £10k budget and partner who doesn't want me to burn the environment too much. I want a drivers' car with good handling, oomph and space for four adults. Not too worried about image. Can anyone help? I'm vaguely thinking about a Volvo S60 or S80 D5. I'll keep it for quite a few years. Read more
I bought a car from a small 'prestige' outlet three weeks ago and have been faced with purchasing new front disks and pads together with 2 front parking sensors - which were faulty when I purchased it - but I didn't notice!
The car had just been serviced by a main dealer - so the sensor fault codes would have been present then and the appalling state of the disk and pads would have been noticed too.
In fact, the front disks were so bad the MOT station (run by a friend of mine) said they'd have to fail the car unless I had them replaced. When shown to me (I saw them take them off) it soon became apparent just how worn they were.
This little lot has cost me just under £500 in the past 3 weeks, have I got any chance or reason to expect anything from the dealer - or is it my look out that I didn't spot these things at the time?
Thanks in advance! Read more
Succinctly put, my view entirely.
I wasn't thinking of asking the full amount, perhaps half the cost of the MOT invoice, however I may review that in light of your post!
Many thanks.
Everyone on here is aware that recent French-made cars, in particular, seem to suffer more than the expected number of problems with their electronics (motoring link).
Story in today's DT says the French-assembled giant Airbus A380 airliner will be delivered late because its electronic systems are a 'shambles' with 'hundreds' of problems still unsolved, just months before it was due to go into service. Now the company's financial backers are heading for the exit.
Question is, is this a normal stage of aircraft development and a coincidence that it is put together in the country that has problems making car electronics work - or can we ever feel safe flying in one? Read more
Very sad. We had many Peugeots over the years as a family when the 304, 504, 505 and 205 were current models. Apart from a tendency to rust a bit (205 and 505 excluded) they were brilliant tough and reliable cars. I wonder why Peugeot appear to have slipped.
hi honest john, i am not mechanicly minded but do know bits about a car :-).
i went to start the car this morning,
the only thing that happened was all the ignitions lights you know battery parking light etc lit up on the dash as normal,
there was no clicking sound that you get when you turn on the ignition to start the car.
I ended up bumping it in reverse after pushing it up a hill and the car started. Came back from my journey parked up turned it off and went to start it again, the car would not start. same thing, all the usual ignition lights but no clicking sound when you turn the key, hence car wont start. what could be the problem, thankyou.

For four quid I am actually very tempted.
Wonder if they do black four door ones? ;-)
Adam's post got me thinking - are we the only country to have the style plates we do?
Every other country I can think of has metal, square plates that look totally different to ours. Read more
Have a look at this site to see what number plates you can fit different age cars. Yes they even do the old embossed metal plates and the curved motorbike plates.

In a recent discussion at work we conclude that as He was a carpenter he would obviously drive a white van!
Can someone offer a possible explanation why on the way to work this morning, Mum's 05 Ghia Mondeo TDCi 130 momentarily had all it's warning lights lit and then reset all the gauges (mpg, average speed etc, trip-distance)? She's worried by it, but I said it's probably just a loose wire. The engine didn't change... Read more
Possibly. Not near thetford per chance was it?

My front electric windows are squeaky on my Laguna when the weather is dry. Has anyone experienced this problem and knows of the cure beore I get my dealer to fix it for me? Read more
I am glad it's sorted.
What is this recall all about? I've not heard anything about this. What engine does your Laguna have?
My 1999 TDI90 Polo estate has smoked a little on start up for sometime. Always happens when left overnight. Smells of diesel. Car has covered 70k & uses no oil. Runs well. Gives average year on year of 60mpg. Could my injectors be a little worn or clogged? I'm thinking of trying something like STP diesel injector cleaner. Anyone have any other ideas? Read more
Just put a shot of Redex diesel injector cleaner through the Mondeo a couple of tankfuls ago. I thought the car felt perkier on part throttle as a result, but wasn't sure if I was imagining it.
Brother-in-law has just driven the car tonight and reckons it feels livelier than it did when he drove it two weeks ago, and I hadn't told him I'd done anything to it.
Also got 46 mpg on my last refill against my usual "religious" 43. Car driven the same routes / same speeds.
Will be using it regularly from now on. A fiver well spent.
Cheers

Hello,
I sold my 2003 ZX7R last year and took the ZRX1100 I now have in part exchange. The guy I was doing the deal with and I both agreed that it would be best to fill in both V5s, put them in the same envelope and post them there and then. I received a new V5 for the ZRX a short while later.
I have now received a Vehicle License Application or SORN (V11) form for the bike I sold last year, I have phoned the DVLA and they have asked me to return it advising them in writing as to the new owner/keeper.
I phoned the new keeper who has inturn also phoned the DVLA to be told that he may have to pay a fee for a new V5 to be issued, this when it is the DVLA's mess up!
Clearly any fixed penalty notices, notices of intended prosecution relating to speeding etc would have come to me, presumably it would have been for me to prove that I was not riding the bike at the time. Similarly I guess that if the RFL had expired I could have been fined for not SORNing the bike. Also with regard to insurance, the new keeper may not be insured if it is a requirement of his policy that the insured bike is registered in his name.
All is well that ends well though it is clear that a DVLA mess up can have potentially serious implications.
Regards.

A female worker there said: "Boredom is a major problem in this place. People find ways to liven up their days."
Took 6 weeks to return a V5. Perhaps they should get on with some work to relieve the boredom!!!

Volvo Safety?
Now what is Volvo Safety apart from good advertising? What makes it different from the rather better renault safety?
